Celebrating 20 years of “Do the Right Thing”

In a week where a suburban Philadelphia private swim club was in the headlines for denying access to African-American children, the lessons contained within “Do The Right Thing” continue to resonate. To mark the film’s 20th anniversary, director and Morehouse grad Spike Lee and castmates Bill Nunn and Joie Lee were among the celebs at a screening and party held Saturday night at the Fox Theatre.

Two decades after its release, the powerful film has lost none of its punch (even though the large boom box that ignites a riot and a fatality in the movie has been largely replaced in the new millennium by the smaller less communal iPod).

Following the screening, CNN anchor T.J. Holmes moderated a Q&A session with the cast (questions were taken from both audience members and culled from CNN’s Facebook page).

Among the celebs spotted in the crowd: “Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail” actress Keshia Knight Pulliam and director Kenny Leon.

I remember stealing a HUGE ‘Do The Right Thing’ movie poster off a building on Peters Street and hanging it on my bedroom wall – this thing had to be 6 feet by 4 feet but it was one of my most prized possessions – Spike doesn’t get enought credit for launching (or re-launching in some cases) the careers of accomplished actors like Danny Aiello, the Turturro brothers, Annabella Sciorra and Adrien Brody for instance

I celebrated my birthday on July 11th and that was “Doing the right thing” by being at the Fox celebrating along with Spike Lee’s 20th anniversary of DTRT . Born and raised in Brooklyn Bed Stuy Do or Die. Now I live in Atlanta and what a present it was to share such an occasion watching a movie that took me back home. My cousins married Italians. I was married to a Black man and I am a very light skinned Puerto Rican. Spike Lee is a genius he knows how to capture the essence of every cultural soul. Every time I see one of his films he takes me back home.
