Massell recalls hosting Jackson 5 in the mayor’s office

The passing of pop star Michael Jackson inspired former Atlanta mayor Sam Massell to dig through some of his mayoral mementos to share with Buzz readers.

He dug up a color photo of his meeting with the Jackson 5 from April 7, 1971 when the brothers paid a visit to Atlanta.

“It was one of the perks that came with the office,” Massell told us Tuesday from his Buckhead Coalition office. “It was always pleasant to greet the dignitaries who would come through our city.”

Massell’s daughter Melanie (who would also grow up to become a singer) was a major Jackson 5 fan and got to participate in a very special “Take Your Daughter to Work Day” decades before it would become a societal trend.

“Since I didn’t really listen to their music, Melanie had to patiently explain which Jackson was which to her father!” Massell recalled with a chuckle. “They gave her an autographed picture. She was thrilled. The brothers were extremely nice and well-behaved. Here they were, multi-millionaires but they were just kids too.”

I was at that concert. I was a very young girl at the old Municipal Auditorium. Am I the only one that remembers that Michael sang “I’ll Be There” to a lady that was wheeled in on a stretcher? Where are my hometown people????? My favorite song was “Maybe Tomorrow.” I still have my autographed picture by Jermaine.

The interesting thing about Michael, who said “I want to be like Jesus”, is the latest news. Seems Michael is not the biological father of any of his 3 kids. YET, when interviewed by Martin Bashir, Michael stated they were his kids and that black people come in all colors, which I guess theoretically thats possible but not for Prince Michael, Paric or the other one.

Michael, Michael, Michael…what other over the top storys have you told us…*sigh*.

The saga continues…

Hi Rich -

THANKS for publishing this – that day was a hoot. I remember being so shy…and star struck. Glad I got over that! :-)
