BET Awards open with Godfather of Soul, King of Pop

As expected, the 2009 BET Awards focused on the life and career of late trailblazer Michael Jackson during its live broadcast Sunday from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

The telecast opened with a historic clip featuring longtime Jackson mentor, The Godfather of Soul James Brown and Jackson bowing to his musical forefather on a previous BET Awards show. Brown later directed that his legendary cape, a stage prop for decades, be placed around Jackson during the telecast.

On Saturday at the Atlanta Urban League luncheon, Brown’s daughter Dana talked about that very significant moment with Buzz.

“Dad never let anyone wear that cape!” Dana Brown reflected, laughing. “But Michael was special to Dad. Michael studied Dad’s work and actually incorporated my Dad’s moves into his Motown audition. Dad loved and respected Michael and Michael felt the same way about Dad. It was a mutual admiration. So when the cape exchange happened, it didn’t surprise any of us who knew Dad.”

The Late Great Micheal Jackson, (The Greatest Entertainer of ALL TIME, may have been chronologically 50 years old, but I don’t think he ever made it past being the child he never had a chance to be. His is a story of highs never to been reached again by any person to lows no person should have to endure. He never grew up and we the fans didn’t want him to. He had the glare of fame burning in his eyes since he was little. I believe that Joe drove them, beat them, verbally abused them, all in an effort to live life through his sons, ( I mean, to reap all the monies he could out of them.) Their mother stood silent, witness to all this yet allowing it to continue. And still, Michael’s light shined brighter than anyone elses. His subsequent flameout is equally unmatched. I grieve for him, the child he was, the man he would never become, the children who have lost their father, the siblings who lost their brother, and everyone else who loved him. Joe Jackson will one day answer for his ways as we will all have to answer for the way we live our lives. RIP Michael
