The 63rd annual Tonys get off to spotty start

We probably wouldn’t want to be the stage manager backstage at the 63rd Annual Tony Awards right about now. Microphone issues plagued the planned ambitious mash-up opening of Broadway talent on the live CBS telecast from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Atlanta’s own Sir Elton John, seated at a black piano, opened the musical medley singing his song “Electricity” from his nominated musical “Billy Elliot.”

The problem? The mike wasn’t on for the opening notes. Techs soon remedied the problem as the multiple young lads who perform the title role in the show danced around the stage.

Then things got even more dicey when the curtains opened to reveal the stars of the “Guys and Dolls” and “West Side Story” revivals. Even if combining the already complex “Tonight” from “Story” with “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” from “Dolls” was a questionable idea, things grew worse when miking issues continued to be an issue.

And that was all before 1980s hair band vocalist Bret Michaels and his band Poison showed up on stage with the cast of “Rock of Ages.”

Still, Sir Elton, looking perhaps as dashing as we’ve ever seen him in a positively conservative black tuxedo, matching tie and formal white shirt, re-emerged with Dolly Parton, Liza Minnelli and the entire cast of “Hair” for a rousing finale featuring the hippie anthem,

 ”Let the Sunshine In.”

Tonys host and “How I Met You Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris announced it was the most expensive Tonys opening ever. Perhaps, they could have sprung for a tech run-through then?

Just asking.
