Thus far, the Atlanta nominees aren’t faring well at the 63rd annual Tony Awards. Sir Elton John was surprisingly shut out of the Best Score award by composer Tom Kitt’s underdog musical “Next to Normal” (a riveting performance from the winner, however, will no doubt add to its future box office).
Even Twitter addict Jane Fonda was surprised.
Tweeted Fonda from her seat at Radio City Music Hall: “Big surprise–’Next to Normal’ won best score, beating Elton and ['9 to 5' pal] Dolly [Parton]. I haven’t seen it yet.”
John re-emerged to introduce the jaw droppingly choreographed “Billy Elliot” sequence, “Angry Dance”/”Solidarity” from the musical.
Fonda herself, an odds on favorite to win for “33 Variations,” lost to “God of Carnage” actress Marcia Gay Harden.
Mused Fonda on Twitter: “For me, it felt like a prize just getting to this. [Fellow Best Actress nominee] Janet McNeer and I will now go have some vodkas with impunity.”
Cheers, Ms. Fonda.
Alas, Fonda’s “33 Variations” also lost to “God of Carnage” for Best Play.
