A Soul-ful approach to Twittering with fans

Collective Soul

Collective Soul

Sure, “following” celebrities around on Twitter is currently all the rage among the addicts of the online social networking Website. But the members of the Stockbridge-birthed band Collective Soul have quickly distinguished themselves on the popular networking site by adhering to the rock act’s long-held fan philosophy.

Unlike Twittering celebs Ashton Kutcher, John Mayer, Demi Moore, etc., the boys in Collective Soul are actually following more fans than they have following them (on Monday, the band had 14,762 followers while they were following 15,201 of their fans).

Web insiders, like Oceanside, Calif-based blogger Webaddict columnist Joel Mackey have taken notice of the band’s unique, more interactive approach and are praising the personal touch (see:http://openpresswire.com/). For weeks, Brothers Ed and Dean Roland, guitarist Joel Kosche and bassist Will Turpin have kept fans in the loop almost hourly with updates and personal pics as the band created its brand-new album (tentatively due out Aug. 25) at a lake house together.

“We’re using Twitter as an extension of how we’ve always interacted with fans,” Dean Roland told us the other night at Urban Flats in Buckhead. “After a show when we’re walking to the bus, if there are fans there waiting, we’re going to talk to them and see how they liked the show. We always want them to feel a part of the process. When Twitter came along, it was just another great tool for us to stay connected.”

Through June 15, the band is sponsoring a contest where fans can score an autographed guitar, backstage passes and concert tickets for blogging their personal thoughts about the band while mentioning the band’s blog site and Twitter profile (for details: http://twitter.com/collective_soul).

Dean is understandably excited about the new album.

“We just finished it at 5 a.m. [Wednesday],” he previewed. “It was the first time in 10 years that we holed up together and wrote and recorded as a band. There was so much more collaboration with no creative limitations. When you just show up in a studio, it can feel like going to a job.”

He’s particularly excited for fans to hear “You,” a mid-tempo tune the band wrote together.

Laughed Roland: “We had a lot of fun doing that one. We kinda do a Pete Townshend/The Who instrument bashing thing at the end!”

Good article but not entirely accurate. Anyone following the band on Twitter knows that Joel has only done one tweet so far, that Will has done a few after one of the shows and that its 97% Dean tweeting – dont get me wrong – its been mind blowing to have them Tweet at all!

and this:

“It was the first time in 10 years that we holed up together and wrote and recorded as a band. There was so much more collaboration with no creative limitations. When you just show up in a studio, it can feel like going to a job.”

just plain excites me!!

What really impresses me about Collective Soul, is they realize that they (like every band or celebrity, etc.) would be nothing without their fans. They appreciate their fans and in return… their fans appreciate them.

I am not a regular fan of the band, but i do listen to thier music when its played on the radio or in clubs/pubs im in.
Still they found me on twitter and that makes them the absolute best in terms of celeb/entertainer twitter’s.
I will be following them for as long as they let me, i am very grateful and proud to be considered one of thier fans, thier pics and updates on twitter are the coolest thing ever, i think most all of us enjoy seeing creative talented people share a little of thier world with the rest of us
may good fortune and happiness shine on them for the rest of thier days!.

Great article and commentary on the developments of social media and how Collective Soul is leveraging social media. I can say that Chris’s comment above is not correct since I’ve actually communicated with the band members through tweets and Direct Messages. Joel had reached out to me and thanked me for insightful articles on my blog which was just plain shocking. To have celebrities stepping out of their “zone” and appreciating the media around them is a turning point.

With all that said, it certainly would have been cool if you have could have provided a link to my blog post that gave you all the information to create this article. Thanks for the great coverage and mentioning my name though. :) Keep up good coverage of the emerging world of social media and the evolution of the Intertubes.

Sincerely,

Wow, I must say, I’m shocked. Rare for news media to participate in a 2-way conversation. Looks like I may have to crank out an article featuring news publications that actually read and interact due to their comments. You will find me as a loyal reader to see what is being said around these parts because you guys are proving you have the right idea in mind. I certainly appreciate that Richard! I’m honored and impressed with your professionalism. Onward!

Sincerely,

Great article Richard. Collective Soul is heads and tails above what any other band is doing as far as I know. Their willingness to share and interact is unparalleled. Last month our youngest turned 13. He taught himself to play the harmonica when he was 6 or 7. Took drum lessons for for a couple of years and picked that up fast. Now wants to play the guitar (trying to scrape up the $$ for all of that) and I got in touch with Dean and told him this and he personally emailed a very nice message to our son and if you could have SEEN his face !

These guys are a class act and very talented crew that has not let their well deserved success go to their heads. Must have something to do with the fact they are from Georgia. My parents and all of my relatives are from there :-)
