Fonda Creates G-Power To Battle Teen Pregnancy Rise

While Jane Fonda will certainly be accepting congratulations for her brand-new Tony nomination, she and her Atlanta-based non-profit, the Georgia Campaign For Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention will also commemorate National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy today by announcing a ground-breaking fund-raising initiative for the Georgia charity.

G-Power 2009 has been created as a the six-month campaign to help support G-CAPP’s statewide work as a leader in pregnancy prevention.

Instead of a star-studded premiere in Atlanta this year, Fonda and G-CAPP CEO Michele Ozumba today will debut a new Web site, www.gpower2009.org. The GPower site allows donors to give amounts ranging from $1 to $1,500. Supporters can upload photos, videos and messages. They can also invite friends and family to join.

“In these current economic conditions, the time just wasn’t right for a big formal gala,” Ozumba told Buzz Tuesday. “We want parents, teachers, young people and our supporters to come together as we seek solutions for the challenges we’re facing once again in Georgia.”

After years of decline, teen pregnancy statistics are once again climbing across the state.

And G-CAPP staffers realize the solutions must go beyond the state’s preferred stance of abstinence-only-until-marriage.

Why?

Well, as Fonda’s “Monster-In-Law” co-star Wanda Sykes memorably phrased it a few years ago at a G-CAPP fund-raiser in Atlanta: “Teen girls are still gettin’ pregnant! Come on!”

Explained Fonda via e-mail: “We all agree that not having sex in the first place is the only 100-percent effective method to prevent teen pregnancy,” Fonda said. “We also know it’s important to teach young people how to make responsible decisions regarding their health. Teen pregnancy is an issue that requires many solutions.”

As Buzz readers already know, during her stint on Broadway, Fonda has made savvy use of social networking sites to keep in touch with fans.

Similarly, the GPower initiative will also use Facebook and Twitter to connect people across the state and hopefully raise much-needed funds as well.

Ozumba concedes to being a bit behind the technological learning curve her 71-year-old boss has mastered.

“I was one of those reluctant horses dragged to the trough of technology!” Ozumba said laughing. “But if Jane can blog between scenes on Broadway, we can do our part as well.”

Tweet of the Day

Naturally, the freshly minted “33 Variations” Tony Best Actress nominee was on Twitter early Tuesday morning.

Tweeted Fonda to fans: ” ‘33 Variations’ has five Tony nominations!!!! The play [playwright] Moses Kaufman, me, [featured actor] Zach Grenier, the sets and the lighting. I’m sooo happy.”

And Fonda may just have a fellow Atlantan across the aisle from her when the Tonys are handed out June 7. Sir Elton John’s “Billy Elliot” musical netted a whopping 15 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Orchestrations.

Woodward Academy grad Hunter Bell, meanwhile, was nominated for Best Book for his inventively titled “[Title of Show].”

Saluting Cancer “Heroes”

David Greer, publisher of Gwinnett Magazine, and long time supporter of the American Cancer Society, wanted to do more this year to encourage people to rally around the cause. So he wrote a song, called “All Are Our Heroes.”

“Their battles unspoken, their triumphs unknown. These are our heroes, but they can’t go it alone.”

The lyrics moved many others to donate their time and effort to create the song. Local artist Rachel Farley joined forces as a co-writer, and she sings the tune. Tree Sound Studios in Norcross offered up their space for free. And Atlanta singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins (known for his hit, “Lullaby”) produced the song, assembling a group of musicians to perform the piece. There’s also six backup singers — local childhood cancer survivors adding their voices to the song’s final chorus.

The tune is now ready to be heard (www.allareourheroes.com) just in time for the annual Relay for Life beginning Friday evening at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville. It’s one of thousands of Relay for Life events scheduled across the country this weekend.

Farley will perform the Heroes song Friday night at the Gwinnett Relay event during a luminary ceremony in which thousands of candles are lit honoring cancer survivors, as well as remembering those loved ones lost to the disease.

“There’s this walk that the survivors do around the track and it’s very powerful — you see people, young and old, and you see everything from courage to fear to triumph, and it’s very moving,” said Greer, who also dedicates every May issue of his magazine to cancer survivors. “You clap while the survivors walk and there are so many of them, you clap a long time and you can see a kind of look of fear in their eyes. It’s something I see in every cancer survivor and I don’t think you get it any other way. It’s what inspired me.”

For more information about the song, go to www.allareourheroes.com. You can download the song for a suggested donation of $5 with all of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

Something, anything besides Jane Fonda and Elton John. Take a look, nearly every article hear has one or the other in it, one even has both. The Peach Buzz used to feature great stuff, now just Fonda and Elton.

They’re the biggest celebs in town. Who else would you want to see in PB, local rappers?

How about just a variety? And if you look at the blog, most of the time, they aren’t in town, they’re in New York or London.

JR…you took the words out of my mouse. Buzz Guy…I love you, but please. We’re begging. Tedd Turner, Cynthia McKinney, Scarlett O’Hara even, anyone but Jane or John. We have so many great shows in town this concert season, there must be someone else to focus on. Please.
