“Great” Tribute For Boys Club Alum Usher

Thanks to the Boys & Girls Club, Usher’s mother learned pretty early on that something other than sports, might be the right career path for the future five-time Grammy winner.

As a kid back in Chattanooga, Tenn., Usher Raymond IV once asked his mom, Jonnetta Patton, to come see him play in a Boys & Girls Club football game.

She arrived “only to find Usher on the sidelines, eating cookies,” she recalled to a crowd gathered outside the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Headquarters in Midtown last week.

“So you can guess, we rethought that career,” Patton continued.

Thankfully for us, the Boys & Girls Clubs stayed on Atlanta’s 40 million-selling recording artist’s mind.

The organization, likewise, is paying tribute to its famous alumnus, including Usher, by unveiling billboards of the future famous.

A billboard, featuring the singer as a 6-year-old, is now up on Peachtree Road.

It’s part of its “Be Great” campaign featuring Denzel Washington, Martin Sheen, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and other celebrities to increase awareness of the clubs, and to encourage “every American to help young people be great.”

Usher also set the record straight about his mom’s recollection. Sort of. “Football games aren’t just about the game,” he told us with a smile. “You’ve got to enjoy the concessions!”

One “Beautiful” Review

Atlanta’s own rocker daddy John Boydston got some primo exposure for his Daddy A Go Go band brand via the new issue of People magazine. In the celebrity weekly’s annual circulation-soaring “100 Most Beautiful” issue, Boydston’s latest “Come On, Get Happy: The Best of Daddy A Go Go Volume 1″ is reviewed, along with kid-friendly albums by the likes of Jewel, Rick Springfield, Dan Zanes and Ziggy Marley. Praised People: “Boydston brings a percussive beat and sly humor to songs like “I Caught My Daddy Watching Cartoons.”

Overscene

Married actors Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher dining at One Midtown Kitchen. We’re told Moore ordered a burger with sauteed spinach on the side, while Kutcher had the king salmon tartare.

According to One Midtown Kitchen reps, Moore was a returning guest who was introducing the Midtown hotspot to her hubby, who’s in town shooting the big screen flick “Five Killers” with Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara.

There was no immediate word on whether the Twitter-addicted couple silenced their hand-held electronics during dinner.

Kutcher was also spotted at Dantanna’s on Sunday, watching the NBA play-off action on the sports bar’s multiple big-screen TVs.

Houston Astros catcher Ivan Rodriguez caught the Boston Celtics-Chicago Bulls play-off game over dinner at Stats downtown.
