‘Bama sororities dodge call to integrate

The University of Alabama welcomes black athletes with open arms.

Black sorority girls get the cold shoulder.

The student newspaper, The Crimson White (I did not make that name up), says a non-binding measure supporting the integration of sororities was sent back to a student Senate committee by a 27-5 vote. Since the resolution was introduced on the last day of the session, the vote effectively shelved it until a new student government convenes.

Alabama sororities were criticized last fall after The Crimson White reported two potential black members were not invited to join all-white sororities because of pressure from alumnae, and in one case, an adviser. Four black students did join white sororities, but some believe more could be done to promote Greek diversity.

A sponsor of the resolution said it failed because student government members who are part of the Greek system voted against it.

“I think ultimately the reason that it failed to pass was it gave the impression … that maybe we were attempting to disparage the Greek community, you know, which wasn’t the case,” Chisholm Allenlundy said. “Ultimately, the resolution was to just encourage further integration based on diversity, specifically racial diversity on our campus, which I think a lot of people would agree with.”

I read the resolution and it only says the segregated Greek system has attracted “unfavorable media attention,” which is true.

The Crimson White article doesn’t include any comments from those who voted to send the resolution back to committee, nor does it ask Allenlundy why the resolution’s authors waited until the last day of the session to introduce it.

Another sponsor of the resolution told The Huffington Post she was warned by “The Machine” that introducing the resolution would cost her politically in the future.

Meanwhile, Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (I did not make that name up) is projected to go in the first or second round of the NFL draft. He was probably accepted anywhere he went on campus.

“The Crimson White”???? Are you effing kidding me??? If you hadn’t said that part about not making that up, I would have thought that was meant to be a joke.

My understanding is that sororities are private organizations so nothing can be legally done about it. But it’s time to bring these people, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century through public outrage and action.

I’m all for equality across the board but even if race is removed entirely from the article, this is still very bias – not to mention the inaccuracies. I would assume the University of Alabama welcomes ALL [talented] athletes with open arms regardless of race, why mention something irrelevant to prove a point? Also, if black sorority girls were given the cold shoulder like George claims, would they have been ’sorority girls’ or just regular girls? One would think that a cold shoulder meant they were turned away by a sorority. Labeling them as sorority girls makes us think they were initiated, which would contradict the entire article. Maybe Forrest could help out at with Alabama’s integration problem again and offer George some insight too.

Whiney a$$ UGA people on here today! In the second sentence George writes, “Black sorority girls get the cold shoulder.” Black sororities and fraternities (I believe they call them the divine 9) have been welcome on campus for decades. This issue of integrating sororities and fraternities have been an issue at Alabama for a long time though. George just wants to take a shot at the school and that’s fine. Alabama has one of the highest acceptance rates of African-Americans in the SEC (percentage wise). A lot higher than UGA! But I’m sure the author just forgot to mention that. I don’t expect much more from an opinion writer at the AJC who’s never left the state in his entire life though.

Was this story written in 1960? These people are so far behind that it may not be possible for them to make the 21st century before the 22nd century has arrived. And they wonder why they are poor, speak funny, and get laughed at when they try for a deceit job in San Francisco or New York.

Clearly, more information is needed here to give a balanced view of the story. But one poster commented regarding diversity in historically Black greek organizations and stated that a white pledge would be turned away for membership, which is not true. On predominately white campuses, there are actually some non Black males and females who pledge traditionally Black Greek organizations. I attended a Emory where there were black women (although not many, mostly because of a lack of interest) who pledged predominately white sororities. Likewise for the fraternities. I think the attitude towards Greek Life diversity depends on the particular campus and the attitude of the organization itself towards diversity. I graduated from undergrad over 20 years ago and it is indeed sad to see this same situation and conversation still going. When will this country ever emerge from the shackles of segregation? And PS, as a parent of an ethnically diverse kid, unless there are some MAJOR societal shifts on this issue, Alabama would NEVER be on my kid’s college list. EVER!!!!

Don’t Tread, nice try with the “well, black people do it too” kind of argument, but its invalid (as well as juvenile). There are plenty of white members of predominantly black sororities and fraternities. Not the majority at all, because just like black students wanting to join white fraternities and sororities, there aren’t that many of them. Ignorance of people perpetuates racism and stupidity, sir.

@Andrew — Let’s not be naive. It’s one thing to name the school paper after the school colors, but that does not appear to be the case here. Leaving out *and* makes Crimson White read very differently than Crimson *and* White. If the paper was truly named after the school colors, I’m guessing that it would have been The Crimson and White. The fact that it’s The Crimson White, one can only speculate on the real meaning/intent behind the name. It certainly makes one wonder…..Hmmh.

27 to 5 against measure is strong majority. Doesnt speak well for the grps involved.

I am also wondering about the ‘invited to join’ is that how it works. one asks to pledge then they are ‘invited to join’ after sorors vote on each applicant? The story some time ago re a judge’s granddaughter w her own credentials being rejected raised an eyebrow. I’m wondering what reason if any was given then and now to the two applicants or other caucasian applicants. at one time at my alma mater female applicants who were rejected for baseless reasons were, on one noteworthy occassion, ‘brought over’ by the main office of the sorority. Sadly women have a long way to go sometimes to get over catty behavior. I’m wondering about the fraternities which are not mentioned. What has been the experience for applicants of color? THere ought to be a fair number of Asians, esp So. Asians, and Latino students applying to sororities and fraternities.
