A Tennessee woman who police say crashed into a church and stabbed her husband claims she was following the instructions of both God and the devil, reports WJHL-TV.
Church Hill, Tenn., police say at about 10 a.m. Sunday Stephanie Hamman crashed her car through the front doors of Providence Church and called her husband, Steven, who lives with her in apartment across the street from the church.
When Steven arrived he found his wife lying in front of the altar with a large kitchen knife. She arose, said “the devil is in me” and stabbed him in the chest, he said.
Steven “pulled the knife from his chest” and returned to his apartment and waited for an ambulance.
He will live.
Stephanie, 23, was arrested 20 minutes later at a medical center and told police God had told her to not “smoke weed” day and night, but just at night to relax.
God also told her to drive her car through the church doors, but the devil told her to take a knife.
As she waited for her husband in the church, she said she “prayed” she wouldn’t have to use the knife on her husband, but she was mad at him for “worshipping the NASCAR race at Bristol,” which was surprisingly won by driver Carl Edwards.
Stephanie, who is charged with attempted murder, told police she likes to smoke a lot of marijuana.
“Sometimes when I do [smoke a lot of marijuana], I start seeing things that others don’t. Isn’t God good? He told me this would happen, and just look, I am okay,” said Stephanie Hamman.
Providence Church Pastor Joel Trigg said he didn’t know what to think about all of this.
