Last week we learned the disturbing tale of a woman whose death in her home was not discovered for 6 years.
Today, news out of Alabama is that a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s lived in a home with her deceased husband for a month.
Family and friends had not heard from Jessie Claude Kirby, 75, and Doris Kirby, 78, for several months, and asked Decatur, Ala., police to check up on them. Decatur is in north Alabama near Huntsville.
Doris did not open the door for police, but officers were able to peer into the home’s windows and see the body of Jessie on a bed.
Police entered the home and found Doris in poor health. The bodies of two dogs, which may have starved to death, were also found.
The local coroner said Jessie died of natural causes and foul play is not expected.
Doris Kirby was hospitalized.
The world is a big place, and these two cases probably are not indicative of a trend, but someone needs to devise a better method of checking up on seniors and those who live alone.
