Most NFL quarterbacks carry a cannon when they take the field, but the wife of Dolphins star Ryan Tannehill carries a semi-automatic rifle when cruising around Miami.

The Miami Herald reports Lauren Tannehill, who is not bad looking BTW, rented a Nissan Rogue in early January but brought it back two hours later and rented another vehicle.

That sounds a bit fishy (or at least marine mammaly) already.

The next person to rent the small SUV found a $2,000 AR-15 in the back seat. The lightweight rifle, which the fully automatic M-16 used by the U.S. military is based on, is very popular with civilians and law enforcement agencies.

An AR-15 is perfectly legal to own, but the New York woman who found it said she “felt like throwing up” when she saw it.

The rifle, which is owned by the QB, was turned over to police, who said, …

Study: Sex makes people smarter

The juvenile phrase “Don’t be dumb, get you some” is, almost unbelievably, scientifically valid.

The Atlantic reports researchers in Maryland and South Korea have concluded “sexual activity in mice and rats improves mental performance and increases” the production of brain cells.

Maryland researchers found middle-aged rats that had sex had improved cognitive function and better memory (and likely memories) than rats that did not have sex.

Korean scientists in a separate study had similar findings, saying “sexual activity counteracts the memory-robbing effects of chronic stress in mice.”

I’ve never been a lab rat, but I imagine that is a stressful job.

Being smart does not mean you will have more sex, The Atlantic reports as though someone actually thinks that is how life works.

Studies have concluded intelligent people have less sex when young, but at an advanced age, …

Report: U.S. worked with Mexico’s largest drug cartel

In Mexico, armed citizens are fighting drug cartels.

In the U.S., federal agents helped the largest drug cartel do business, reports El Universal, one of Mexico’s largest and most respected newspapers.

The article alleges between 2000 and 2012 that Drug Enforcement Agency agents and U.S. Department of Justice officials cooperated with Sinaloa cartel, allowing the group to smuggle billion of dollars of drugs into the U.S. in return for information on smaller groups.

The newspaper says it interviewed “hundreds” of credible sources for the story, and provides corroborating U.S. court documents.

Federal officials have not commented.

El Universal said it is not known if the deal between U.S. prosecutors and Sinaloa exists today, …

An Alabama teacher who admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old student apologized in a video after being sentenced to 6 months.

Mobile County math teacher Alicia Gray accepted a plea deal and will be on probation for 5 years and must register as a sex offender when released.

In the video, the married 28-year-old woman apologized for “selfish actions made out of insecurity.”

She assured her victim and his family that God had given her a “changed identity.”

In February, Gray was charged with second degree sodomy and second degree sex abuse. The victim told police his teacher engaged in oral sex and also sent nude photos to his cellphone.

The victim’s family is pleased with the sentence.

The video was a nice touch, but would a male teacher who had sex with a 14-year-old female student be given a plea deal? Would the male teacher go to jail for 6 …

Report: Worst school in U.S. has no books

Many years ago, I visited the alleged “worst school” in the U.S., an elementary school in Greenville, Fla.

During my visit, I learned the kids weren’t stupid, but the school struggled to produce good standardized test results because the students were poor and many were the children of migrant workers and didn’t speak English.

The new principal hired to turn things around was retired military and had the kids wearing white uniforms and marching in line between classes.

Those kids didn’t know how good they had it.

The New York Post, in a largely unsourced article, says an elementary school in the Queens area of New York City doesn’t have textbooks or teacher guides and “the kids have seen more movies than Siskel & Ebert.”

Public School 106 in Far Rockaway, Queens, is a short distance from the coastline ravaged by Superstorm Sandy in October of 2012.

Part of the school was wrecked and not repaired. Unnamed sources say the school is now a dump, with 40 preschoolers spending …

Death threats after college athlete literacy study

Researcher Mary Willingham says many college athletes in profit-making sports cannot read at the college level. (Image from CNN video)

Death threats travel faster than bad news.

The researcher who told CNN many college athletes struggle to read has received multiple death threats from a non-adoring public.

“Even more shocking,” said CNN, is that Mary Willingham’s employer, the University of North Carolina, is disavowing the research they paid for that says 8 to 10 percent of UNC athletes read below third-grade level.

In a press release, UNC said it does not believe Willingham’s story that she once tutored an athlete who could not read and that they have not seen the research they paid for.

Unfortunately for the university, CNN has copies of emails Willingham sent to university officials where she shared her findings.

When confronted with those emails, UNC changed its tune, saying Willingham did share her findings and did have permission from the university to do the …

Children seized after ’swearing toddler’ video release

Teaching a child racial epithets isn’t a crime, but it can lead to your children being taken from you.

A police union in Nebraska has posted a video of a toddler using the “N-word” and a “slew of profanities” while arguing with adults over a toppled chair, reports CNN, who, unlike police, has blurred the face of the child. The kid even knows how to “shoot a bird.”

The toddler and three other children were taken from the home Wednesday by Omaha police and Nebraska Child Protective Services.

The police union, who says it got the video from a “local thug’s Facebook page,” posted the video on its website to “highlight what it called the ‘cycle of violence and thuggery’ the community faces,” reports CNN.

“Now while we didn’t see anything in this video that is blatantly ‘illegal,’ we sure did see a lot that is flat out immoral and completely unhealthy for this little child from a healthy upbringing standpoint,” said the police union.

Omaha’s police chief, the ACLU, and “community …

The football season may have been a letdown, but UGA athletes are still winners.

A report by CNN indicates Georgia athletes are among the least illiterate.

In the story titled “Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders,” the Atlanta-based news network says 7 to 15 percent of players admitted to some of the best universities in the nation can’t read at the college level.

CNN asked for SAT and ACT scores from 37 universities; only 21 responded, including the University of Georgia.

At UGA, 7.5% of athletes during a 6-year period (2007-12) scored less than 400 on the reading portion of the SAT or 16 on the ACT reading test, the level considered “college literate.”

Twenty-two of the 7.5% were on the football team. One was on the men’s basketball team and one was on the women’s basketball team. Information for athletes on …

Devil worshipers submit plan for Satan statue

Satan explains the Dungeons & Dragons wisdom modifier and how it affects saving throws to children in Oklahoma. (AP)

Looking for something to warm you?

How about a seat on Satan’s lap?

A group of devil worshipers has submitted a plan for a statue at the Oklahoma State Capitol that “depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns and a long beard. … Satan is sitting in a pentagram-adorned throne with smiling children next to him,” writes the Associated Press.

“The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation,” said Lucien Greaves, spokesdemon for the Satanic Temple in New York City.

There’s currently no plan to have flames under the statue so Satan’s lap is as hot as the fiery furnaces of hell.

Various groups of folks that probably aren’t going to heaven have been submitting plans for “alternate” statues after the Oklahoma Legislature let a privately funded Ten …

How cold is it? Snowy owl spotted in Florida

This snowy owl, seen near Jacksonville, Fla., was reported to say global warming is nothing more than a plot by House Slytherin. (AP Photo)

Global warming is such a flop at least one snowy owl has moved to Florida.

The large white owl, best known for befriending Harry Potter, probably got confused by all the human snowbirds flying south for winter. The bird was seen near Jacksonville and is only the third snowy owl ever spotted in Florida.

Ornithologists, who aren’t the people that put braces on children’s teeth, say the birds usually live in regions of Canada that are so cold they don’t even have hockey teams. This year, the birds are being seen more often in southern climes, especially the Midwest, where the mercury is sitting uncomfortable below zero.

With the Tuesday low in Atlanta expected to be below 10, we should all be happy polar bears can’t fly.

I’ve been off for a spell, so let’s get quickly to other news:

Georgia Tech is 2nd “most wired” university in the U.S.: An …
