Report: Blackface ‘Trayvon’ costume-wearer a felon

Racism isn’t funny, but idiots keep trying.

The latest proof comes from Florida, where a convicted felon smeared black paint on his face in an attempt to resemble someone without a criminal record, Trayvon Martin.

As most of you know, Martin was killed in a fight with serial-speeder George Zimmerman, who was found not guilty in July. Many who disagree with that verdict would agree that going to a Halloween party in blackface to look like someone who was shot to death is a bad idea.

The photo of the insensitive partygoers has been making the rounds on social media, and some have provided “youth” as an excuse for dumb.

I have no problem with young people doing stupid things. I did a few dumb things myself, but people called me on it.

The Smoking Gun website is calling out these people and says the man dressed as Trayvon is not that young, but he is a felon.

“William Filene, 25, dressed up as Martin, covering his face in black paint and donning a gray sweatshirt with a single bullet hole surrounded by fake blood. Filene, who also lives in Cape Coral, was arrested in June for felony auto theft. His rap sheet also included collars for loitering/prowling and failing to register an automobile,” writes The Smoking Gun. “In a plea deal, Filene copped to the auto theft charge during an August hearing in Lee County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to 18 months probation, and now has his own page on the Florida Department of Corrections web site.”

The woman in the photo posted it to her Facebook page but pulled it after her friends pointed out the obvious. She is identified as Caitlin Cimeno of Martha’s Vineyard. Her costume, which appears to be that of a porky leprechaun, may enrage the Irish.

The Smoking Gun alleges she has used racial slurs in the past on Facebook:

“In August, Cimeno posted a photo of an African American girl wearing a T-shirt reading ‘Black Girls Rock.’ In her accompanying caption, Cimeno wrote, ‘First of all, sorry Hun but mommy lied to you & secondly if I was wearing a shirt that said something like the truth ‘white girls rock’ I would be stared at and called a racist cracker.’”

The other man in the photo is Greg Cimeno, who may be the brother of Caitlin. He’s also from Cape Coral and only 22, so you might think he should be given a pass. Unfortunately, he tried to defend the alleged hilariousness of the photo when Caitlin’s friends suggested she yank it.

“Not too funny[?] It’s [bleeping] hilarious!!!” he wrote on Facebook before Caitlin deactivated the page.

Sadly, it’s not just rednecks that think racism is funny. Over the weekend, the fashion world celebrated Halloween by dressing up as slaves in chains. Many wore blackface or makeup to make their skin appear darker. FashionBombDaily.com, which I check out frequently for new ideas in Hawaiian shirts, has photos from a ‘Disco Africa’ party that I think occurred in Italy.

And celebs think it is funny too. Actress Julianne Hough, 25, has apologized for wearing blackface to a Halloween party.

If you are an adult racist and feel the need to wear a costume to a party, just wear a sheet like your ancestors and claim you are a ghost.

‘Tropic Thunder,’ ‘Soul Man’ are a couple of movies that come to mind right away where white actors wore black-face. So please stop with the stupidity of the ‘White Girls’ comments.
While George Mathis is completely accurate with his “porky leprechaun” reference, the black-face felon looks nothing like Trayvon.

This could have been a great article, but you couldn’t suspend your powerful emotions from it and diluted the point. Yes, these people are wrong, wrong, wrong (you don’t don someone’s skin color or culture as a costume, EVER), but attacking them superficially by characterizing the woman as a “porky leprechaun” and making a great blanket statement that your regular, run of the mill racists are “rednecks” puts you on their level of ignorance. Don’t do it. Next time, step back from the keyboard and take a breath before you pound out your furies. You have a great opportunity to facilitate discussions and give food for thought.

White People: “If they would stop teaching racial hatred to their kids, maybe some of the damage they initiated upon this country can begin to heal.” Couldn’t agree more… I just don’t hide behind my heritage.

Guest, you have permission to keep wearing black clothing. Most rational people don’t equate wearing a black T-shirt with wearing blackface, so I think you are OK.

Black people just don’t get it; they never will.

You’ve heard of ‘black ignorance’? Well, there’s also ‘black arrogance. Their own ancestors sold them as slaves. They enslaved Blacks, and still can’t bear to see anyone other than another Black person called a racist. They have no respect.

If they would stop teaching racial hatred to their multiple kids, maybe some of the damage they initiated upon this country can begin to heal. Now, many people have racist attitudes, but you have to go back to the source: Blacks.

I’d hate to be one of them and have that as part of my heritage.
Have a nice day.

Your hyprocrisy is hilarious. You cry racism for wearing black face and then turn around and call that girl porky and use redneck.

Some of you miss the point. We live in a free society. Which means we have freedom of speech. As offensive (to some) the Trevon costume is – there is no law against it.

We Americans are constantly living in quandary. On one hand we won’t the world to now how “free” we are – but on the other had we want to deny certain groups in our society their rights because the don’t look like we do or live a certain lifestyle…..we can’t have it both ways.

FREEDOM is FREEDOM you can’t pick and choose.

Offensive the get up is Yes…but they have the right to do it…..

@ Black People
My skin is black. I have three college degrees. I am the person in charge of the Western hemisphere of a global company. My black wife, has two college degrees. She heads the North American office of her company. We have two children and a dog. Our kids attends a private school in the suburbs. We live in a $600k home inside a gated community. I say all this not to brag but rather to ask a question: What is it that I don’t get?

I read a comment where someone compared O.J. of being AQUITTED of killing his ex-coke head white wife and her gay friend. What you don’t realize is that NOBODY dressed like Nicole or her gay friend..Nobody walked around with a fake head hanging on by a mere thread with blood everywhere. So NO it’s NOT the same!

If I was like ‘Black People’ I would say this:
White People Heritage:
1. Bought people as slaves because they were too damn lazy to do the work themselves
2. Raped the slaves, after all that’s how the so-called mixed, light-skinned, mulattos, began
3. When their beloved white woman just had to get a piece of the Mandigo, they murdered Mandigo all because of their insecurity (little wee-wees)
4. Committed treason against USA just to keep slaves
5. Murdered over 100k WHITE soldiers just to keep slaves
6. After slaves were freed, created share-cropping to keep black poor
7. Refused to let black folk into colleges and university
8. Created the first terrorist organization in the USA, the KKK
9. Enacted laws to keep black people, Asian people, Mexicans out of good jobs (Jim Crow)

I’m glad I’m not one of them, I wouldn’t want them as part of my heritage.

What would be next, to dress up like the children of Sandy Hook. Somethings are just bad ideas and this certainly is one. People are free to think and do as they please, but somethings just should not be done and this is one. Not good for Trey or George.

I don’t know what is worse, wearing blackface to a party that only a few attended or reprinting the picture that thousands will see. If it’s insensitive, it’s insensitive and shouldn’t have been reprinted and published on AJC.com.

trevor,

With respect to your 9., this country bends over backwards for minorities to go to college and get jobs. When the majority of a group of people are uneducated, they can’t really expect a good paying job, right?

Scuba Steve

Chris — I disagree, people need to see this! It’s 2013 and this still happens. This isn’t the fictional character of Jason or Michael Meyers or whatever. That kid is DEAD in reality. The circumstances of his death are immaterial, why on earth are we parodying dead 17-year-olds? People need to see this.

Guest — It would seem that this country bent over backwards for over 100 years to deny minorities the chance to go to college and get jobs. Expand your history further than the previous 50 years or so.

Scuba Steve- I respectfully disagree with your point and don’t feel that one idiot’s stab at humor needs to be reprinted. If I was at that party I would have found his outfit as offensive as I find it at AJC.com. This isn’t news, this isn’t Julianne Hough, a known celebrity who also wore blackface, this is some jerk off at a party whose boorish and offensive costume now has been elevated for all to see just so a few can sit around and point fingers. We should all look at ourselves and examine the racism in our own hearts, especially some of the folks on this thread. Good day to you.

Chris — I’m not really arguing your greater point, we just have a difference of opinion as far as tactics. It sucks to give this clown any airtime, but I want as many people as possible to see this and be uncomfortable about it — maybe some good will come out of it. For instance, this incident has exposed some of these posters as the scum that they are.

Not surprisingly, the keyboard racists who stalk the AJC blogs are defending this type of callous behavior. Newsflash to racists, this is not your time and social media is not your friend. Another reason you should keep exposing such incidents is to further expose the hate-filled comments people make in regard to the issues.
