Teacher accidentally sends nude pics to students

"And then they told me the photos I sent to Joachim somehow ended up at the White House." (AP Photo on unrelated story)

UPDATE: The teaching assistant has been “reassigned” and no longer has classroom duties.

——-

Technology has made it a lot easier to embarrass yourself.

The Snapchat app, for instance, makes it possible to take a “temporary” photo with your phone and send it to someone. The photo is supposed to disappear from your friend’s phone after a few seconds, but what’s to stop him or her from capturing a screenshot?

So, call me a crusty, old-fashioned curmudgeon if you will, but I think taking nude photos of yourself and sending them hither and yon across the Internets is a bad idea.

A teaching assistant at the University of Iowa would likely agree. Reports are that the young lady accidentally attached a zip file of nude photos to a homework assignment email she sent to about 80 students.

It didn’t take long for people for figure out the problem. The teacher seems to have been “sexting” with her boyfriend on Google Hangouts and somehow animated GIFs of both video feeds were archived. That archive was mistakenly attached to her email.

I will pause a moment while you go check your Google Hangouts archive settings.

Are you back? Let’s continue.

TotalFratMove.com, in an attempt to convey empathy,  writes “It may be a rough semester for her.”

But you have to give her credit, a later update to the story says she arrived on time the next day to teach business math. A “tipster” reports “nothing happened” but the lecture was “very awkward.”

The school has not punished her.

“The individual who sent the messages has stated that it was an accident. She regrets her actions,” University of Iowa spokesman Tom Moore said in a USA Today article.

If she was an older male professor and the students were all female would the university’s reaction be the same?

Good question. Please download this attachment to see the solution.

Here’s more news that should embarrass someone:

No reason for her not to show up for work. She has nothing to hide.

With legalized Marihuana, Gay being “Hero’s” worthy of Presidential acknowledgement and personal phone calls; Same-Sex Marriage all part of the “Hope and Change of the new era”, why not just permit National Nudity and let it all hangout?

Maybe I should enroll at UI. Homework would be infinitely more interesting than that codgy old stuff (with books, paper, and pencils) that I had to do.

@Reality – you mad bro or just living in the 1950s? I think there is an Amish community in Pennsylvania that might rescue you from the big bad world. Your knuckles must hurt from being dragged on the ground all the time.

Lame to have a photo of another woman unrelated to the story. Many, who don’t read the caption disclaimer, will assume it is the teacher in the story. If you don’t have a photo for the story, why post an unrelated one?

It’s not worth being fired for because what’s done is done. However, she should apologize to her students and their parents for being stupid.

Ann, the picture is of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the joke is based on her believing that the U.S. is spying on her by hacking her cell phone. Mr. Mathis has a ironic sense of humor. He can’t be expected to make sure that everyone is capable of getting the joke or that everyone is knowledgeable enough to know who the leaders of the world are. That responsibility is not and should not be his. If you didn’t get the joke or the implication of it, sorry.

By the way, if she were an older male professor she would likely be in jail right now. No judgement there, just acknowledging the strong possibility of it.

LOL, I had a couple of good looking teachers in the south metro area back in the 70s, but most were males, and a holes at that. At least they got a “A” in something. Most people in education, like most cops, are obviously outside their callings. It’s not for everybody. A mistake is a mistake, but if the teacher sent nude pics to students, if her employers want to fire her, what can she say? “Yeah, I was stupid.” Her job is probably lost, but she’ll know better next time…I hope.

“I think of all the education that I’ve missed….but then my homework was never quite like this…”

Why did things like this never happen when I was in school? Of course with no email or electronic means to transmit, it would have had to have been mailed to us or a full-frontal experience in front of the class. What a wonderful thing the electronic age is.

I am not a betting person, but a safe bet in this instance is that she is young, white, and attractive. This article is actually shielding the teacher involved from public shame and scrutiny. Why don’t you show her picture? She is a public employee so it will be on file online!!! If this were a man or woman of color they would be arrested and you would use their mugshot as the story photo to make them look sinister. I wish it was not true, but stories like this show how this society makes exceptions for some people, and examples out of others.

Hot teacher aside, don’t miss the link to the “inappropriate” kids costumes – especially #10. Frankly I don’t think that they are all inappropriate but a couple almost scream for an intervention with these clearly dysfunctional parents.

I don’t buy the accident part. If you are dumb enough to take nude photos you must also be dumb about other things.

SnapChat doesn’t allow you to take a “screen shot” of the image. It in fact notifies the person who sent it that you tried to do that. Helps to have teens who use that…they keep me up to date! LOL

Anyone with nude photos of themselves are just an accident away from humiliation. Of course, you share nude photos with your significant other and you break up with that person, you are at their mercy. It’s simply incredible how stupid many people are.

Yeah, if this had been a guy sending nude photos to women, he’d have been fired.
Who sends nude photos anyway? When I was growing up, before the internet, guys would ask if they could take polaroid photos of me nude. I always said no way. Guys say they won’t show them to their buddies, but men are men. And now, apparently women send nude photos to me as well.

Of course not, he would’ve been fired and the incident would be the lead story on all the network nightly news shows. It’s just the double standard that we’ve all come to expect.

@ Thor – Uh, I understood the joke and the attempted humor of the photo. Note, my comment, said “most readers” will assume the photo is the teacher. I did not say that “I thought it was the teacher”. You are leaping to some assumptions not based on fact or my original post.

Nonetheless, the title of the blog column is “News to Me” and most AJC readers will expect that the photo has a reasonable connection to the news of the specific story. I’m okay with humor on the AJC, but international phone spying is such a long reach from a teacher sending nude photos by mistake that it just doesn’t hold the political humor you are assigning to it. It’s a woman holding a phone – that’s about the only similarity.
