Federal shutdown destroying White House garden

The only winners during a shutdown of federal government are the squirrels raiding the unattended White House garden.

Fortunately for America there’s a blog — Obama Foodorama — dedicated to covering this ongoing tragedy.

Eddie Gehman Kohan, the founding editor of the blog, unveils the horrors unfolding in the Obama’s “Kitchen Garden”:

  • White House gardeners are not allowed to harvest crops and “pounds” of produce are going to waste.
  • Weeds are springing up everywhere.
  • White House squirrels seem to have gotten even more aggressive due to the “low level of human intervention” and “they’re now kids in a candy store, gorging themselves” on presidential papaya.
  • Groundskeepers have given up on their efforts to capture an elusive fox (who may be the solution to the squirrel problem?)

As one may surmise, the once-photogenic garden now looks a mess. Since the handful of gardeners that remain are limited to removing trash and watering plants the vegetables are reportedly “growing amok.”

Tomato plants have grown into unwieldy tangles of vines and “stepping stone pathways can barely be seen between the bed boxes.”

The daily chore of snipping yellow and brown leaves from plants, and replacing non-perfect plants with completely new ones from an off-site greenhouse, has gone undone and makes the garden look almost natural, sadly.

Somehow, executive chef Cris Comerford — one of 15 White House servants deemed essential — is still managing to feed the Obamas.

Kohan reports the White House dog walker is still on the job too.

The shutdown will soon be over and the other 75 servants can return to work at the six-story, 132-room mansion.

How do we know this? An aide to first lady Michelle Obama told a local charity that crops from the South Lawn garden would be harvested and donated by late October.

That’s good news. The tree rats are looking a little too fat and happy.

Natural gardens are healthy gardens. If weeds have grown up in just 2 weeks, the garden was not healthy. This nonsense of consistently replacing poor plants with fresh ones from an offsite greenhouse is wasteful and not reality.

Well God forbid that her majesty’s garden is in ruins due to the shut down. Why does she not get out there & weed her own garden? If it is that important to her then let her get out there on her knees & gloves & hat and do it! I am sick of hearing about how it is disrupting HER. People are going w/o pay but still working, people laid off and we are worried about lady Obama’s garden! Where is the priority in this article? Why not interview the men & women who are suffering through the military; killed soldiers who cannot be greeted back to this country from their family because her husband is making a point to hurt this country. AJC please stop making it look like they are suffering (Obama’s) we all know they are not & it is sickening.

I guess Michelle and the kids don’t do “physical” work that would be an inspiration to OBESE Americans everywhere.

What is this “family” garden supposed to be teaching Americans about raising our own food?

The DOG WALKER was an ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEE during the government shut down? What a joke!

why doesn’t the first lady go out and work the garden like a normal person would have to. If it is so important to her, then she should tend to it….

So the woman with all the time in the world can recommend gardening to all the families in America that have to work two jobs just to pay for the excessive waste of government, but can’t get her own big butt out to pick some weeds or ripe vegetables. This family single-handedly has set back race relations in this country at least 200 years.

As a person who has been around gardens all of my life a garden could not go to waste in 2 weeks if it was maintained before. My next question is why can’t Ms. Obama and the girls not take care of the garden??

How about an article on how Obama arrest our WWII vets for visiting their memorial but invited the illegal aliens into the mall for their protest. Oh no, that would be journalism and if it’s negative the NSA and Holder will go after you and if that doesn’t work the IRS will audit you. The MSM (that’s main stream media for those that use pictures for your news) is as much to blame as the morons we put in office. TERM LIMITS

Michelle Obama was so “down to Earth” in her Gap outfits before her husband took to the White House. What a joke! I guess she should get out there and walk the dog and weed the garden. Pictures of her in the garden are another joke. Obviously, the Obama’s are great at misleading the public!

I don’t understand, If there are still gardeners on staff, why are the “not allowed” to tend to the garden. There is some law that says Gardeners can only take out the trash during a government shutdown? I understand if there are not gardeners available, but that is not what the article said. It said there were gardeners left working, but they were only allowed to carry out the trash. How absolutely absurd. But I guess if , under the reasoning that you don’t have money to keep them them open, you pay extra to put up barricades to block open-air monuments, paying gardeners NOT to garden makes just as much sense.

What a phony, trumped up issue to bring out the Obama haters. Too bad it’s not based on much fact.

First, anyone who has ever had a vegetable garden knows that by the end of the summer season, your tomato plants, if in close proximity to each other in raised beds, will have tangled vines and yellowed leaves. Heirloom tomato plants especially collapse early. This occurs even with well tended home gardens. It’s called the “end of the season” folks and time to remove the plants and plant your fall vegetables.

Second, some commenters seem to be under the impression there is a person hired to be the “dog walker”, as if that is their specific job. The person walking the dogs was a staff person who has plenty of other duties.

There is plenty of legitimate things to criticize the administration about with veering into this kind of territory that isn’t even accurate.

Regarding the garden, it’s nice to see something different on the grounds for a change and the First Lady does tend to the garden at times. It is inspires anyone to start a garden and eat healthy, I’m for it, if it will reduce my tax money being spent on other peoples health problems.
