The only winners during a shutdown of federal government are the squirrels raiding the unattended White House garden.
Fortunately for America there’s a blog — Obama Foodorama — dedicated to covering this ongoing tragedy.
Eddie Gehman Kohan, the founding editor of the blog, unveils the horrors unfolding in the Obama’s “Kitchen Garden”:
As one may surmise, the once-photogenic garden now looks a mess. Since the handful of gardeners that remain are limited to removing trash and watering plants the vegetables are reportedly “growing amok.”
Tomato plants have grown into unwieldy tangles of vines and “stepping stone pathways can barely be seen between the bed boxes.”
The daily chore of snipping yellow and brown leaves from plants, and replacing non-perfect plants with completely new ones from an off-site greenhouse, has gone undone and makes the garden look almost natural, sadly.
Somehow, executive chef Cris Comerford — one of 15 White House servants deemed essential — is still managing to feed the Obamas.
Kohan reports the White House dog walker is still on the job too.
The shutdown will soon be over and the other 75 servants can return to work at the six-story, 132-room mansion.
How do we know this? An aide to first lady Michelle Obama told a local charity that crops from the South Lawn garden would be harvested and donated by late October.
That’s good news. The tree rats are looking a little too fat and happy.
