USPS places fitness stamps on hold

Having fun is unsafe, according to federal officials. (United States Postal Service)

Update: A USPS spokesperson says no decision has been made to destroy the stamps. Such a decision would occur later this year.

It’s tough being a kid. It’s even tougher learning to be tough with namby pamby adults running things.

The United States Postal Service, which is only $4 billion in the red this year, will destroy a series of stamps that depict youngsters doing ‘unsafe’ things, according to multiple reports.

The “Just Move” collection of stamps were intended to promote the government’s “Let’s Move” campaign advocating physical fitness, a cause championed by first lady Michelle Obama.

But three of the 15 colorful stamps allegedly show behavior the White House deems unacceptable — skateboarding without knee pads, doing a ‘cannonball’ into a pool, and performing a handstand without a helmet.

You know what’s really unsafe? Hitting a baseball without eyeballs or swimming without a nose like the poor children on these stamps., a website that usually can cure insomnia, reports the “unsafe depictions came to light after USPS Marketing chief Nagisa Manabe asked Michelle Obama to take part in a first day ceremony for the stamps.”

PostalNews says the “entire press run” will be destroyed, but other sites, such as The Daily Caller, suggest the stamps are perhaps not yet printed. I’ve not seen an estimate of what it cost to produce the stamps.

I’m not tough, but when I was a kid I swung on rope swings into lakes and ponds without a helmet or life preserver and survived. I probably would have been able to handle looking at these stamps.

Today’s kids, who spend more time jacking rides in Grand Theft Auto 5 than stamp collecting, could probably handle it too.

Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, a high school is punishing an honor student who drove a drunk friend home.

The student, who police say was not drinking, ran afoul of the school’s “zero tolerance” policy by picking up the friend after she left work. For helping a friend, the girl was demoted from being captain of the volleyball team and told she would be suspended for five games.

Her parents have filed a lawsuit against the school system.

Yeah, it’s tough being a kid.

“According to Linn’s reporter Bill McAllister, three of the stamps in the fifteen stamp series raised safety concerns among sports figures on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.”

From the PostalNews link …

Why are you people blaming the First Lady? She isn’t the one making the decision to scrap these stamps. Jeez – the racism is rampant.

Head Start, day care, and lunch programs are shut down, and someone has time to fret over a skate board stamp? That is insanity.

George was to busy getting Drunk and watching football to think of the Kids. Laure was too busy smoking her cigarettes, and reading her books in an attempt to hide from George and his drinking to consider the children of America. i cn see George now in a drunken stupor pasting the stamps on his forehead. Saying Look at me…someone Mail me ….please!

I would have said “George there not enough postage here to send you to MARS!” :)

It seems to me that this HS girl actually complied w/ the zero tollerance policy by not letting a friend drive drunk. That is what normal people would see by this good act. ‘To hell in a hand basket’ just got in the express lane!
What happened to the drunk HS girl? My guess she got some kind of kudo’s for calling for help when she knew she was unable to drive safe. You just gotta love these liberals!!!!!!!!!

The USPS currently maintains a government-protected monopoly on the delivery of “first class” mail. That broad term basically covers the vast majority of items moved in this country. This vast amount of material (and the revenue it generates) is a vast pile of wealth that should not be in the hands of such an incompetent organization.

Simply ending the monopoly on first class mail delivery and opening up the delivery of letters, etc. to national, regional, and even local companies or individuals would be the best thing for America. I am certainly not talking about transferring the monopoly from the USPS to another monopoly carrier (like UPS or FedEx), but they would certainly be in a position to compete in what should be a completely free and open market for service.

The economically ignorant will criticize this by saying “who would want to pay $10.00 to mail a postcard with FedEx.” Of course economic ignorance is 90% of what this country is in such horrible financial shape. The vast quantity of mail that would be available would mean great economies of scale. Certainly letters would move across the country for as little as the USPS currently charges and likely the costs would drop even lower. Lysander Spooner, the great philosopher and writer of the late 1800/early 1900 period actually ran a competing postal service that delivered better service and lower costs. Of course the government had to shut down an institution that embarrassed them so much and the protection of the monopoly was firmly in place.

How many more stories of failure are we willing to put up with before we embrace the reality that the USPS monopoly no longer serves the interests of America as a whole? Time to open up the market so we can all enjoy the benefits it delivers.

This country has gone from stupid to absurd. It is no wonder that it is running out of money.

[...] So the only thing to do was to destroy the stamps lest the Postal Service be responsible for a wave of pediatric horror stories. Just the thing for the plaintiffs bar, of course, so all the more reason to destroy the stamps. [...]

Gene@7:19……you make a point about not having free lunches, day care & Head Start but you could have made real sense if you had used programs like witholding Vet Services, life threatening medical services and CDC food inspections. I guess we all see things different. ‘One man’s s–t is another man’s ice cream’.

You idiot who feel that keeping your fat lazy children sitting in front of the television and not doing any exercise is okay; however, when we didn’t have all these electronic devices, we were always outside and we didn’t have such fat kids. My husband and I insist on our children exercising and getting fit by running as a family and keep fit and not giving our children fast food constantly and eating a balanced meal from home. I’m so sick of seeing your fat kids in my school who can bearly walk and keep their fat lazy selves glued to the television playing games and not having a conversations or moving off the couch.

It’s not clear whether these stamps were in circulation yet. Does anyone know? If they were then this will turn into a bonanza for collectors. I wonder how many bhusseino’s family hoarded. I also wonder if this was a contrived scheme to profit from the sale of the discontinued stamps. I am not surprised by anything these people do.

Sell the damn things. Most of them will be bought by collectors, and never used. A win win situation. Or is this something the government cannot do? Something that makes sense.

Cartoon characters do wayyy more dangerous stuff every Saturday morning, and in every crash and bash video game kids play! And when was the last time YOUR child looked at a postage stamp – if they even know what one is! They Text – they don’t Mail! If these stamps have been produced and are destroyed, there’s a new symbol of idiocy and waste the Wall Street group can take up – and the whole country would stand with them. But first, I hope they take up the cause of eliminating retirement benefits for Congress. Everybody but their relatives would stand with Wall Street for that!

I am very disappointed after reading this. These are faceless caricatures! Kids are influenced by email, texting, and social media which DO NOT use stamps. Stamps are not going to make a kid do a cannon ball, the other kids doing cannon balls are going too!!!!

This is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard, and I live in CA. Yet I am not surprised such stupidity is rampant amongst our government officials. I work at an elementary school where kids cannot use the jungle gym, play tag or dodge ball, and where the entire class must go to the restroom together because sending students in groups of three (3) is unsafe. No one is going to copy a one inch piece of paper! the USPS and its predecessor the USPOD have released far worse issues than this and no one ever complained, this all began a few years ago when some fool made a news story about the Minnesota state quarter showing boaters without life jackets, ever since then the government seems to prefer baby proofing its issuances, of fictional depictions rather than dedicating itself to solve our more serious problems, though the us mint did not (thankfully) destroy the quarters. Though while we are on money, the new security features on the nexgen $100 bill are known to daze and nauseate certain people, where is the white house on this? this last one really being a serious threat to photosensitive people. Lincoln was right if we ever lose our freedom we will do so by our own action, or rather inaction, to vote these idiots out of office, and never trust their kind as long as we live and can vote, as a young fool who voted for some of these idiots several times I want to take this time to apologize to this country
