Python kills 2 boys atop pet store

Two boys sleeping atop a pet store in Canada were killed by a 16-foot escaped python, police say.

The brothers, ages 5 and 7, were allegedly strangled to death in their sleep after a 100-pound African Rock Python slithered into their room via a vent connected to the pet store below, according to media reports.

Connor and Noah Barthe were staying with Jean-Claude Savoie, who owns the Reptile Ocean pet store in the small town of Campbellton in New Brunswick, Canada.

Savoie told police he walked into his living room Monday and found the boys dead at 6:30 a.m. The snake was coiled nearby.

Savoie captured the snake and turned it over to Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

An autopsy will be performed on the children. No charges have been filed in the case.

Canada’s National Post reports the children are the sons of Savoie’s “best friend,” Mandy Trecartin, who lives in an apartment behind the pet store.

This is such a tragedy. It is only confirmation that wildlife should remain in their own habitat.

Why do people have these kind of animals around children? This is so sad.

Andy…that is one of the coldest statements I’ve ever heard! ANY child, regardless of age, has an attachment to their parents. You are ignorant! I hope you never have to lose one of your dear ones.

…but there is something fishy about this story. I hope the police can uncover the real truth. The folks who commented on this in the NY Post have a lot to say. Check out their comments at

This seems like a very strange story. Pythons don’t strangle their victims, the crush them. Also they only kill what they eat, was there any evidence that the snake tried to swallow either of the boys. I hate to say it, but I think there is a skunk in that wood pile somewhere.

Fishy story here for sure… snake would have only killed and eaten one of them… that surely would have woken the other ?????? !!!!!!

We suggest registration and a ban on all snakes over 4 feet…sort of like gun control.

I have one rule of thumb – never have a pet that can eat you or kill you.

So sorry for these young men.

The facts of this case don’t really seem to add up. As has been mentioned, this is completely outside the behavior of a python. They don’t kill and leave their prey, nor do they stand guard over their prey like a bear might. There is rarely follow-up in a story like this, but I’m thinking the snake was not what killed them. For one thing, constrictors don’t wrap themselves around their prey’s neck and strangle them. They constrict around the chest and as the prey breathes out, they tighten until breathing in becomes impossible. As part of the investigation, they should inspect the snake to see if there was trauma. Trying to cover themselves, somebody might have used the snake to strangle the children.

Sounds like some FN bullshtine to me….I think the father is using the snake to FN cover for what he did to his own kids.

I don’t believe this story for a minute. Pythons and other snakes do not “thrill-kill” and they kill to eat. The snake obviously didn’t consume both boys.

There’s a lot of details left out of this story and I think a homicide investigation is probably going to happen before it gets written-off as some kind of bizarre snake attack where a python kills two kids and leaves them there. That is complete BS.

Sometimes, in this sick world of ours, one parent does horrible things to children in order to “get back” at the other parent. I’m just saying. Something is not right with this story, but two beautiful children are gone before their time. May they rest in peace.

Wow, lots of snake experts here…… I didn’t know pythons took Human Anatomy 101 and they should know the difference between a human’s neck and chest. That said, this is someone’s fault and there should be some kind of criminal charges filed.

I have to agree with the general consensus here, I don’t think the snake was to blame (or at least not completely). First of all, consider how could a 16-foot long, 100 pound snake crawl through the vent without making a noise PLUS that’s a lot of body mass to pull through the twists and turns normally encountered in HVAC ductwork. Something is rotten in New Brunswick.

Totally not buying this for all of the reasons already listed above AND if the snake crushed and ate one boy, maybe.

But not 2, not at the same time.

Ship the python to Washington state and leave it in the cell of the man who blew up his dog…

JAB, I certainly agree. I snake normally sizes up its prey, and to strangle both kids without at least trying to swallow one, is not normal for this type of predator. I think the autopsy will be revealing and someone besides the snake will stand charged.

These snakes are termed “constrictors” for good reason. They wrap around their prey and constrict their movement until they suffocate. If a coil were around one’s neck this might occur quicker as the prey is strangled. The prey are crushed in the sense of being pressed upon, but are not usually crushed in the sense of their bones, etc being fractured. Also, some constrictors have been found deceased because they “bit off more than they could swallow” so they do not always correctly assess the size of their prey. Whether a constrictor would kill and then release its prey without attempting to consume it is something an expert on constrictors (not me!) could address.

What a horrific story! I don’t know of any logical reason why anyone in a civilized world should have the desire or need to own a python. And please spare me the “rights” argument … these children had a right to live.

How could these kids have been “visiting” the guy’s son and his son was not in the room with them? And other reports said the mother of the kids was with the guy all night. And how did the snake get out and go thru the ventilation system? My friend, who is a snake expert for Miami-Dade, and who is always on TV capturing big snakes, says the snake would be unlikely to go up a ventilation system.

And how come neither boy cried out? When one was being attacked, why didn’t the other scream or run? Police need to investigate the man and the mother. Is this like the snake in FL that killed a child when the parents were in bed and had let the snake get out and run free? Poor kids!

Partlycloudy – I was about to say the same thing….snakes like that don’t up and crawl through a ventilation system; that’s some movie type crap.
They need to reinvent the scene putting those two adults in the room with that snake.
