America no longer world’s fattest nation

America, land of the (exercise) free, is no longer that world’s fattest major country on Earth.

Mexico, whose residents have clearly been spending too much time emulating their northern neighbors, are the new calorie kings, according to a United Nations report.

Easier to digest than a UN document is the article “How Mexico got so fat,” on GlobalPost.com, which blames the increased girth on the unhealthy combo of rising incomes and rampant consumption.

Though almost 50 percent of Mexico’s population is considered poor, “it is the malnourished that are becoming obese,” says one expert.

About 70 percent of Mexican adults are considered overweight; 32.8 percent are obese. The U.S. huffs and puffs its way to second place with a 31.8 percent obesity rate.

Curiously, the world’s smallest nations have the largest residents. The Cook (with Lard) Islands in the South Pacific house but 10,000 humans, but more than 60 percent of them are obese, according to the UN report. More island fatties can be found on Tonga, Samoa and Nauru.

The thinnest developed country? Maybe Japan, where only 4.5 percent are considered obese. Western Europe does well also, with rates generally under 20 percent.

Less than a month ago, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease.

Note: The UN report seems to use 2008 data, so it does not include the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese I had for lunch.

George, I’m glad I lost all that weight! Now we are not the fatest thanks to my diet. Incidentally, I now work from home and make $1m per day faxing to the fat people of Mexico with my revolutionary fat loss program. You should try it too, George!!

@ George, thank you for posting your comment about racist comments. It’s sad that regardless of the article….people post racist comments on ajc.com. And I have to say that I read quite a few newspapers online….and I’ve seen more racist comments on ajc.com, then any of the other newspapers. Very sad for a city that’s supposedly “too busy to hate”!!!!

Exactly why does the United Nations study this? Other than they, rather we, fund it. What on God’s green earth could they do about it?

Maybe the United Nations should be classified as a disease. It has spread to a greater degree than the worst epidemics to have struck mankind.

Well the largest segment of the population, the Boomers, is also … the largest segment of the population. As that portion of our herd starts thinning out due to age, our numbers will go back down. Of course, that also depends on how well educated the younger masses are on diet and health issues. We like to think of ourselves as generally more well informed today than our parents and grandparents on such issues. So time will tell.

So it is us and Mexico running double chin and double chin to the (fat) finish line! Judging by my latest trip to the beach, we have some more runnin’ to do. But those skinny people have a disadvantage to us…..Western Europe..can’t afford to eat since they are taxed at 90.umpteen percent…..Japanese…too polite to eat. Oh well…I guess the U.S and Mexico will be fat and happy while the rest of the world withers away on tofu and haggis.

Another thought….the world loves us and really wants to be us…therefore, they emulate our eating habits…and Mexico aint that far away…know what I mean? To further help our positioning in the world ranking, in the near term I believe we need to suggest a “Honey Boo Boo” programming marathon to be exported to Finland and the rest of Scandinavia till we get a bunch a Mama June and HBB wannabes “runnin’ round over there stuffing they faces” with ’skeitti and cheese doodles. After that, a longer term solution of a “shock and awe” Waffle House construction strategy is in order….

The truth is that fat, mass-produced staple foods are cheaper than healthy food for most people that do not grow their own. It is far cheaper to feed a family a carb-rich diet than it is to feed them a healthy regimen of veggies, fruits, and lean-meats.

Not saying that carbs are bad on their own, but when they are all a lower income family can afford then they can easily lead to obesity.

While it’s easy to blame people in both the US and Mexico that are obese, we should also look at ways to continue to lower the cost of healthier choices.

Maybe that is because most people that now LIVE in the ATL are not native of this area? And you are SO WRONG about the commenting being les cruel on other newspaper. Liberal HuffPo can be about the most hateful posts out there. The comments on here might be more sterotypical or bigoted, but calling everything you disagree with racist has rendered the true meaning of the word utterly useless.

Mexican Households are known to eat later (on average) than almost any other Country in the World (with the average time being around 10:00 p.m. or later), pair that with the fact that a lot of Mexican dishes consists of a lot of rice(carbs), cheese, and greasy beef or pork, it’s the receipe for disaster. A lot of Mexican Households usually drink some red wine to help digest the late comsumption meal.

Steve(at 3:30 p.m.) is absolutely correct, Why are so many poor people overweight or in bad health? McDonald’s is cheap,(crappy) foods high in carbs, saturated fats, and sodium are CHEAP. I could easily feed a Family of four at a fast food establishment in comparison to going to a health food market and feeding them……

Not a surprise. I am pretty sure I read that Mexico is the largest per capita consumer of Coke and other sugary drinks, so it is no surprise they are the fattest. The U.S. being so high isn’t helped by idiotic movements like HAES and Fat Acceptance – they are dangerously stupid.

The obesity epidemic in the USA is going to make us go broke due to unsustainable healthcare costs. People get all up in arms about “the nanny state”, but in reality someone has to tell Americans how to eat and to be active. In general, kids are not learning this at home. Have you seen how large our kids are today? It’s shameful. I know some children are larger than others due to genetics, and I am not here to pick on the larger kids that are the way they are due to genetics. But let’s not gloss over that fact and ignore that we, in general, eat a bunch a crap and are not a very active society. The facts are in plain sight–large waist lines, wide hips, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. All things Americans experience at much higher rates than other developed countries.

As a 10 year full time resident of Mexico allow me to correct the totally inaccurate comment of Hand Full of S#%* regarding when Mexican eat. The main meal of the day happens in mid-afternoon, 2-3 pm, not late at night, 10pm as is stated. Restaurants are full in the afternoon, bars late at night. In fact most Mexicans do not have any evening meal, or perhaps only a pastry and coffee. The late eaters are in Spain.

“Less than a month ago, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a disease.”

That’s the thing that really ought to concern us. It seems we’re on a slow but sure path to obese people becoming the next officially sanctioned victim class.

Eventually they’ll qualify for a whole new menu (no pun intended) of government and insurance benefits, and those of us who make the effort to live responsibly will foot the bill.

As a part time resident of Juarez and El Paso allow me to implore that this is all the fault of illegal immigration to the US. The money that is sent back to Mexico from the US is spent on all bad things. Mexican Colas are full of sugar, more so than those produced in the US.

Thanks for sharing this, George! The world must speak out more on this very serious health problem (please note that I didn’t use the word ‘disease’). Our PC mentality must be shut off here. We need to start speaking out. The rise of health issues and costs are escalating. My question of the day, “How many people do you know that are anorexic? How many people do you know that are over weight?”

As George Mathis alludes to in the article, obesity is now an indicator of poverty. Considering that, I find the tone of this article to be extremely offensive. Throughout the article Mathis insults and debases people based solely on the adverse health impacts they experience from poverty / being on the losing end of global capitalism. Maybe in his next article he can talk about how skinny and unsightly cancer patients are. SMH.

Ever been in the grocery store line and seen what fat people paying with EBT cards have in their carts? Ding Dongs, donuts, doritos, big K cola (not diet), ho-hos, twinkies, ice cream, ribs, chicken, rice n beans, butter, white bread, spray cheese in a can, etc. The only exercise they get is lifting their food to their mouth and wiping when it comes out the other end…
