Convicted killer says he’s too fat to be executed

A convicted killer who became “morbidly obese” in prison says he’s now too fat to be executed.
Ronald Post, who pleaded guilty in 1985 to killing a hotel clerk in Ohio, now weighs almost 500 pounds. He is scheduled to be executed in January, but has filed papers in federal court arguing his death by lethal injection would create severe problems for executioners.
First of all, his thick layer of fat would make it difficult of doctors to find a vein. Ohio executes inmates with a single dose of pentobarbital, usually injected through the arms.
And then there’s the matter of the flimsy metal gurneys. Post thinks his immense girth would break those.
“Indeed, given his unique physical and medical condition there is a substantial risk that any attempt to execute him will result in serious physical and psychological pain to him, as well as an execution involving a torturous and lingering death,” the federal filing said.
Post, 53, has tried to lose weight. His request for gastric bypass surgery was denied. He’s been encouraged not to walk because he’s at risk for falling, and severe depression has contributed to his inability to limit how much he eats, his filing said.
While at the Mansfield Correctional Institution, Post “used that prison’s exercise bike until it broke under his weight,” according to the filing. He now uses a wheelchair.
Post killed Slumber Inn hotel clerk Helen Grace Vantz Dec. 15, 1983, in Elyria, Ohio. He shot the 53-year-old woman in the back of the head twice and escaped with $100 and a 13-inch black and white TV set.
Vantz’s son, William, laughed Monday when he heard about Post’s request, according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Then he became serious.
“I don’t care if they have to wheel him in on a tractor-trailer; 30 years is too long,” William Vantz said.

Why not try putting him on a diet…..a starvation diet. Wire his mouth shut until he loses enough weight.
This would NOT be cruel and unusual punishment for the crime he committed.
On another note….FRY his ass. It would sizzle for days.
It’s sad he IS wearing makeup. It looks like he is trying to be a pretty boy. Hopefully somebody’s “beach”.
The man needs to die with or without makeup. He needed to be executed immediately after he committed the crime.
He is using food and weight as an excuse. Execute him…he has NO right to even think he should live another day.

I am willing to bet he gained all that weight on purpose for this exact reason. Prisoners have to be found in good health to be able to be executed. I don’t give a rat’s patootie how fat he is, he should be put to death. There are provisional tactics they can use to still get the job done no matter how big he is. Unfortunately, Cruel & Unusual Punishment can be used in a wide variety of ways and this iis just another one. There are prisoners all over the country, filing lawsuits under that reason, simply because they got crunchy peanut butter and wanted creamy, or they didn’t get dessert. Everyone should do the research in their state to see how much money is being spent on these wasted, fraudulent claims.

Why exactly is he being executed. The whole kill a killer is circular logic that has done nothing to lower the crime rate in this country. People like this should be forced to do disaster cleanup with electronic location tracking devices and electroshock devices designed to keep them “domestic”. What a waste. I see many cases where the victims fail to receive the level of justice provided to the criminals. In the end, the punishment does not fit the crime. Most important, we should not be worried about the pain inflicted on the criminal. There us nothing inhumane about using a needle to puncture through the thick layer of skin or worrying if the gurney will buckle due to severe obesity. Gastric bypass surgery, are you kidding me!! If slow roasting him on a rotisserie does not burn the fat, I say shoot him in back of the head twice just like he did to the hotel clerk!

Solution: Keep the food on one side of bars, and the inmate on the other… This isn’t rocket science, it’s weight watchers, jenny craig, etc. Less food = less weight. If he can’t control himself… in prison…. why the heck can’t the prison control him. Isn’t that what they do? I think people like bereasonable and Marik should foot the bill for long-term prison inmates. If these people think that murders should be able to live and it is not OUR right to kill anyone, then they should pay for all food, health care, housing, etc for inmates that would otherwise be out down like the animlas they are.
But they will argue that would not be fair because a civil society should care for the incarcerated, not any one individual. It is society’s problem. WELL then, LET society solve the problem, and in extreme cases, society calls for death. Reminds me of that old saying… put your money where your mouth is! Go rescue a puppy or something.

Back in the days when the constitution was written, nobody thought it was inhumane and “cruel and unusual” punishment to hang people by the neck until they were dead. And for most of human history from 1600s to the 1980s, people did not think that death by firing squad was particularly cruel either. It’s certainly not torture like being broken on the wheel, drawn and quartered, pressed beneath stones, etc. THOSE are what the Constitution bans.
I say hoist him up to a scaffold with a forklift, give him a noose and just a couple feet of drop, and release the trap door. It was good enough for the Framers to do to the felons of their day. IT will work for us too.

Good job Samantha. Are you that dumb?? The high cost is the legal proceedings (appeals/extended jury selection/time/money etc. I am keeping it simple for you since you are clearly uneducated). Once that is done the cost is done. He is ready to be put to death. So yes in the past 30 years, it has been more expensive to TRY to get him put to death. In comparison with just leaving someone in jail it is more expensive. Now that the process is over, killing him is far more cheaper than leaving him in jail for 30 more years. How do you not understand that? The info that you are using to say capital punishment is more expensive lies in the fact that the appeal process is endless and costs millions. One vial of, pick you poison, however, is quite inexpensive. Do you get it?

Although you have your right to believe whether capital punishment is right or wrong, I would respectfully say to you…one person killed someone for NO reason for personal gain The other person would be killed because of their crime. I want to know how this man got ahold of that much food in prison to grow to 500 pounds? Who the hell is feeding him? I thought all prisoners got the same amount of food? And being fat isn’t a reason to not be killed. If we let this man off the hook, every prisoner on death row will start stuffing themselves to escape their penalty. I say all inmates should get one meal a day, two pieces of white bread and a single slice of bologna and a side of water. That’s it…why do they deserve any more? They are criminals. Oh yeah, cruel and unusual punishment…what about the victims? Where they treated with respect? I say take this guy out back and shoot him between the eyes, he certainly makes a big enough target. I don’t get it. Usually there are extraordinary circumstance for a Capital crime. Like a cop was killed, pregnant ladies being killed, children, multiple murder, rape, kidnapping etc. Shopkeeper gets killed during a robbery? His special circumstance was Murder + “Aggravated robbery”, looked it up. Only that isn’t listed as a “special circumstance” under Ohio law. Looked that up too.
But, I guess that’s life in Ohio, I think 5 executions carried out last year. Very strict death penalty state. Limited time frames for appeals etc. They’re not going to let this one slide. It will be execution as usual. He intentionally killed an innocent person and that’s good enough in my book.

Either shoot him in the head, or run the injection into his jugular – I could hit that one – or whatever is necessary – but enough with the cruel and unusual punishment, and suffering and all the other baloney.
