‘50 Shades’ gives Sugar Daddy websites, bondage a boost

Literature has often changed society.

Tracts by Thomas Paine helped rile up pre-Americans seeking government independence while Karl Marx riled up those seeking government dependence.

“50 Shades of Grey” by British author E. L. James is nothing like those books, but the erotic tome has boosted traffic at “Sugar Daddy” dating sites, reports Business Insider.

I’ve never read “50 Shades of Grey,” but trust a co-worker, who says she wanted to “stab her eyes out” while reading it with her book club.

A reader of this blog has a higher opinion of the book, saying “The 3-book series begins with Anastasia Steele, a young woman, meeting and falling for millionaire Christian Grey, a gorgeous man with a dark past who draws her into his world of BDSM.”

Whatever you think of the novel, it’s certainly getting people’s attention. “50 Shades” has sold 20 million copies and surpassed “Harry Potter & The Chamber Pot of Smelly Secrets” as the fastest-selling paperback of all time.

According to Brandon Wade, the millionaire founder of SeekingArrangement.com, a dating site for wealthy men that “want to date the best” and women that want help “mentally, emotionally and financially,” the novel has boosted business and sparked an apparent interest in bondage.

Wade says 186,000 female members of the site are actively seeking a “Christian Grey” type arrangement.

The businessman, an alleged virgin himself when he attended MIT, spills some dirt on his customers:

  • 79 percent of female members found the idea of succumbing to a ‘dominant’ male like Grey a turnon
  • 90 percent of male members said they found the idea of woman being a ’submissive’ like Steele exciting
  • 43 percent said they were more likely to use handcuffs in sexual role play
  • 47 percent wanted to experiment with blindfolds and other bondage gear

Hmmmm … “Of Human Bondage” says nothing like that.

How about: “The 3-book series begins with Anastasia Steele, a young woman, meeting and falling for millionaire Christian Grey, a gorgeous man with a dark past who draws her into his world of BDSM.”

It never involves whips and chains, and there is never an “exchange” as put in this blog. This made it sound as though some young innocent sold herself as a sex slave, when that is not the case. Either way, it is a book. If you like it, read it. If not, don’t.

Wow… some of you people are idiots (Avid Reader and KS… among others). You ask if he’s read the book, when he’s clearly stated he hasn’t. Did you read his article????? His article is not a review of the book (Seriously Shaking Head)… it is an article on it’s effect on a popular website and BDSM. I’m shaking my head at Shaking Head for not understanding something so simple. Wow.. I bet some of you people kick your dog in the head first thing in the morning… then you go online to see who else you can beat up for no reason.

Seriously shaking my head

Your head line is perfect up until bondage. That has such a miniscule role in the trilogy compared to the sociology/psychology and little to do with the actual story line. Mr. Mathis I was married to a journalist for a decade. I have a great respect for them and you. However, J school teaches you give credit to both sides of an opinion. Pro or con and represent them fairly when you write about it regardless if its for a blog or an investigative piece. Obviously you were a bit one sided and didn’t present a fair representation of both sides. The opinions you presented from the third parties could have been better balanced. I respect their ability to have an opinion, however MY opinion is what I stated earlier.

The book is a wonderful insight to the mindset of someone who is into deviant behavior with another consenting adult. The submissive is actually in control…as in the book. The female character takes personal responsiblity for her own decisions and isn’t trading herself for anything or doing anything she doesn’t want. Reading and comprehending the book are two different things.

Mr. Mathis I read your article and i have read what others have been saying.

You have done nothing to warrant there misguided comments. You apparently just contacted a web sight. This is not substantial information to claim its booted bondage inquires across “Sugar Daddy” websites. A more accurate title would be something like “50 shades gives a “Sugar Daddy” website, bondage boost” or more accurately “Credit giving to ‘50 Shades of Grey’ for a boost to a ‘Sugar Daddy’ websites bondage desire”

Thou people, including myself, feel there opinions matter more then others and they should be listened to and taken heed of. Take them for what there comments are. People wanting to make statements where others can read. Not as a personal affront to yourself. Your article interested me enough to look at some of your other work, i do hope with further information you give it will be more then just a co-worker, and one genuine source of information.

I know my grammar is horrid I hope you will over look it.

I can summarize the books for you (since I’ve actually read them). It is a story about how a man overcomes his childhood trauma, and his propensity to define himself by it, through the love of a woman who sees more in him than he has ever been able to see in himself.

It has ZERO to do with any of the bs mentioned above.
