Kids throw garbage in Sept. 11 memorial pool

Learning to ignore bad children and parenting is a painful but worthwhile endeavor, though it retards the advancement of civilization.

Despite my zen, I’m not sure I could have turned the other cheek if I’d observed junior high students tossing garbage into the reflecting pool at the September 11 Memorial in New York City.

Fox News reports one of the kids was detained by police for having bullets in his pockets.

“These kids just need to be educated about what happened there,” said New Yorker Anthoula Kastinatides, whose brother died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The kids were on a summer field trip with a Brooklyn public school. New York’s school chancellor said the students who threw garbage into the memorial, which opened Sept. 11, 2011, in Lower Manhattan, may be punished. The kid that had ammunition faces a police investigation.

And who knows, maybe a parent will get involved?

“Parents are a childs first teacher….” “the apple doesn’t roll far from the tree…..” “you aren’t going to punish my child….” and we wonder about these sorts of things….

Jerry Sandusky…what do you expect from middle aged white male culture? They need to be whipped and you can tell them I said so.

Rick, way to make assumptions and generalizations.

Wasn’t it in NY state where the kids were so hateful towards the bus monitor? Send these kids down south where “thank you” and “yes Ma’am” are still common virtues and can be instilled with a hickory switch or pear tree vine.

I was at the memorial in December 2011. Some adults were throwing coins into the pools like it was for good luck. A wonderful volunteer outfitted in a vest came over and asked them to stop. Then she proceeded to talk about the meaning of the 9/11 Memorial. There were a few other volunteers but not nearly enough to handle summer crowds. I appreciated her actions.

Let’s say it wasn’t a National Memorial, would it have been OK then? The problem is lack of respect period. It their parents had been there they probably would have joined in and the one who had the ammo was probably holding it for his dad. It all starts at home and thats the problem. It started at home!

Can’t blame the parents. Most of the kids probably don’t know who their daddy is. Probably have at least one relative already behind bars too. Bet momma’s on welfare.

I was 6 weeks away from giving birth to my first son when 9/11 happened. If either of my boys did anything like this, to teach them the respect and to make it stick for a good long while, I would make them not only clean it up, they would also have to send apology letters to each family that lost a family member(s) that day. In each letter, they would include the name of each family member that was lost, how old they were, etc. They would understand the magnitude of that day and the respect that should be given to those families then.

The fact they are on a field trip in Late June should say it all!! I believe most kids are out for the summer.
