UGA ranked 2nd in aspiring ‘Sugar Babies’

The University of Georgia, one of the oldest public universities in the U.S., has many noble, time-honored traditions.

This blog isn’t about one of them.

Once UGA topples Sugar Baby powerhouse NYU, they will indeed be No. 1.

Once UGA topples Sugar Baby powerhouse NYU, it will indeed be No. 1.

Instead, a report issued today concludes potential gold-diggers have made Athens their second most popular higher education destination.

Georgia State is No. 11, which seems odd considering many could easily date walk down the safe streets of Atlanta and find an employable North Avenue Trade School grad.

The results of the report will be featured on ABC News’ 20/20, says SeekingArrangement.com, a dating site that helps moneyed men hook up with cash-strapped women looking for little more than a proper education.

The number of ladies seeking a free ride grew in 2011.

“In 2011, we saw an explosion in the number of college students seeking Sugar Daddies to help pay their college tuition”, says website founder and MIT graduate Brandon Wade. “One in every two Sugar Babies who join our website today are college students, and college Sugar Babies now make up 40% of our Sugar Baby population, up from 33% in 2010.”

Perhaps this explains why the original name of Sugar Daddy, the candy, not the man writing checks, was Papa Sucker.

Here’s the Top 20 list for 2011, ranked according to the number of Sugar Babies silly enough to use their school email address when signing up. Penn State rolls in at No. 13, but I’ll let you write your own jokes.

What does this tell you about the male population at UGA when the women would rather turn to internet dating as opposed to selecting from their options on campus.

I guess when the males are too busy committing felonies on campus, the ladies need some form of stability in a relationship at UGA. You have to give the ladies some credit, they aren’t out there looking for baby daddies and welfare. They are looking for stability and luxury.

WHy does the AJC let us comment on pointless articles like this but not on more substantive articles about issues that truly effect our communities? Get it together.

A solid number of those UGA and Georgia State (and Spelman, GPC, KSU, etc.) girls do, in fact, hang out at Georgia Tech on the weekends for the reasons mentioned – GT grads (68% male) are still mostly getting jobs upon graduation even through the economic tough times.

But I’m guessing the girls on this particular website aren’t looking for college guys at all…they probably come to Atlanta to try to land corporate lawyers and execs. It’s sad what people will give up for money, in my opinion.

@John F,

If the AJC really cared about what people thought about events that trully affect the community, they would need to hire counselors to assist with the shattered egos of the paper’s writers.

It’s my understanding that UGA has turned from a male dominated “Good ole boy” frat boy party school into a majority populated female campus. Supposedly, due to the increased competition for the availiable student slots. I assume the bulk of the female students really desire an education and are willing to work hard for it. This article illustrates exactly how far they will go to achieve their goal.

funny...

Isn’t the population of UGA like 60/40 female to male anyway?

This article is poorly written too.

Do the math people. 155 loose ladies out of 35,000 students. This is the dumbest article I have ever read on the AJC.

And who would want to date an awkward Nerd? Talking to girls in real life is too scary for them!

I think that the point is the Sugar Babies are looking for men ot pay their way now. Not looking for a husband as some may at Georgia Tech.

I think some of you are missing the point. These girls are doing whatever they can to go to UGA in hopes of marrying a UGA grad. This is actually a compliment. No girl would ever want to go to GT or marry some little nerd. She would rather marry a stud from UGA. LOL,……

Not that there aren’t a metric crapload of girls looking for a sugar daddy to marry… everywhere.

Chi Town is calling Athens a dump? From the city that produced Barak Obama, calling Athens, Georgia a dump? That’s a pretty good attempt at humor man, cause women looking for a Sugar Daddy usually frequent “dumps”. Get out of here with that garbage and take it back to Chicago where it belongs.

@nimbus163:

i’m pretty sure it usually goes both ways. anything making UGA look dumb, shallow or petty, the techies are all over it. anything making Tech look geeky, socially inept or athletically inferior, the dogs are on them about it. that’s just how it works in this state, as it does in most other states where there is an instate college rivalry.

The premise of this article is flawed. First of all, “gold-digger” is a pejorative expression which should not be invoked south of Delaware.

What girl would go to college and expect to find a BF to pay for it? UGA is already cheap, and if you’re from GA and got HOPE, then it’s practically free. These girls would have Daddy pay for college costs, just as Daddy paid for her pretty Land Rover. Those who exclusively date “old money” just want a husband of ample means so they can maintain a comfortable lifestyle and be done with their professional career when babies come.

You will find this at any SEC school or top-tier Ivy League institution.

This is why we need to keep America Pro Choice instead of the Government and our tax dollars supporting out of wedlock kids. It costs less to prevent the birth than it does to keep the kid locked up behind bars or to continually feed it. And that’s what usually happens to these ladies with their “sugar daddies”-Sex eventually leads to child birth out of wedlock.
