‘Dogs love marijuana’ says non-local vet

For decades I have lived under the assumption that Scooby-Doo served merely as a warning to pets everywhere.

Turns out, the beloved lover of potentially illicit Scooby Snacks is rather typical of his species.

Dogs love marijuana, says non-local vet Jennifer Schoedler. “I’ve seen them eat the buds, plants, joints and marijuana in food.”

Schoedler made the surprise announcement in a Durango (Colorado) Herald article entitled “Vets see more dogs snarfing humans’ medical pot.”

Durango vets say easier-to-come-by weed is “poisoning” man’s best friend.

“We used to see maybe one case a year,” said veterinarian Stacee Santi. “Now we’re seeing a couple a month.”

Marijuana, like chocolate and coffee, is bad for dogs, said Schoedler, and “stoned” pets may require hospitalization.

In Georgia, of course, we won’t have to worry about our pets “snarfing” our plant-based meds and getting sick — marijuana, in all its myriad forms, is illegal here. We also don’t have to worry about the government planting microchips in our brains. Our Legislature, which will soon convene again, is taking care of us.

We all know that cats love catnip or Nepata cateria. But I have seen a cat jump for a leaf of cannabis much more so than catnip. Whether the plant is adverse to his dietary funtions I do not know.

Wow, this is the silliest non-issue on marijuana I’ve seen in a while. None of my dogs has ever shown even the slightest interst in pot. If on occasion someone has blown smoke in one of my dogs faces, the dog moves away. Period. If you approach the topic scientifically, there is no natural instinct in canines to eat pot. This behavior may be indicative of a nutritional deficiency or it could be an attention seeking behavier. Judging from some of the posts here, maybe your dog wants you to put the pipe down and take him to the park. Perhaps he has reasoned that eating your pot expedites this process. This article is infuriating for a far different reason. Are rational people expected to believe that pot poses a great risk to dogs, but bathing them in toxic chemicals or putting pesticide collars on their necks is OK? Give me a break. Pesticides work in the same manner as nerve agents and in fact are a product of nerve agent research conducted during the WWII era. While pot MAY have some negative effects on dogs (and I’d have to see it to believe it. This seems the most trumped up marijuana garbage since Reefer Madness), the negative effects of pesticide and toxic chemicals on dogs, as well as their human handlers, is well documented. Do you know someone whose dog has had a bad ‘pot experience’? I don’t. This vet sounds like he might be on glue, however.

I was just enjoying some coffee and chocolates with my dogs (three standard poodles). They claim no interest in either bud, plants or joints. The biggest one (weighs 100 lbs. and is almost 14 years-old), says he would probably go for some pot brownies if they were offered. He’s nearly 100 in human years. Who can blame him?
