F-bomb dropped into UGA article

An investigation is under way to determine who dropped the f-bomb into a UGA article that appeared in The Greenville News.

The only kind of bomb UGA fans want to see in a sports article.

John Pittman, executive editor of the South Carolina paper, told media expert Jim Romenesko the article, which appeared in Thursday’s editions, “shocked and saddened” him.

Pittman said only 18 people have complained, which shocks and saddens me.

The UGA article was headlined “Georgia Defense Looks To Make Mark Against LSU.” UGA, as we all know, plays LSU in Saturday’s SEC Championship game.

The profanity occurred as a standalone, lower-case, short third paragraph.

I once toiled as a copy editor, and can honestly say I never let that particular word slip past me. Though I did once craft a 100-point headline that screamed “Habit for Humanity builds 5 new homes.”

This can only be the work of a disgruntled Alabama fan, whose team will NOT be appearing in the sacred title game.

It was indeed the Oahu Bowl, UGA defeated Virginia. Here’s the original caption … HONOLULU – At the top of the fourth quarter, Damien Gary catches a pass from Cory Phillips and scores a touchdown at the Oahu Bowl Sunday, December 24, 2000 at the Aloha Stadium. (T. LEVETTE BAGWELL/AJC STAFF)

I can only hope that one day we shall live in a world where an “f-bomb” making it into a broadcast or print publication doesn’t constitute “news.”

Oh wait… we already do.
