Discrimination bake sale half-baked?

CNN doesn’t cover a lot of bake sales, but one in California is getting plenty of media attention.

Half-baked? You decide.

Half-baked? You decide. (from CNN)

A Republican student group at the University of California at Berkeley (that felt weird to type) is selling cookies and brownies, but the price of the baked goods is based on gender and race.

White men pay the most. Native American women eat free. The price list is in the photo.

The stunt is meant to be racist, discriminatory and get attention, organizers say.

Mission accomplished.

The Republican group is upset that the university, like most government agencies, uses gender and race to determine who gets admitted or hired, reports CNN.

Berkeley’s student government has “condemned” the “use of discrimination whether it is in satire or in seriousness by any student group.”

Proceeds from the sale will go to charity.

The unanswered question? Are those brownies any good? And are they packing the mystery ingredient beloved by 1960s Berkeley protesters?

Probably not. Conservative hash brownies would be news.

If they really wanted to be accurate, they would have robbed the Native Americans for everything they had to pay for the ingredients and forced every black person who walked up to the bake sale to bake the brownies for them. And if they caught anybody who looked like a Latino trying to buy anything they would throw them out.

Gee, I feel foolish, I thought it was based on income disparity between the groups. Silly me. I guess that’s why I’m not a Republican – I realize those groups make less therefore can pay less and that education for those groups is a significant part of closing the income gap. But why would I expect a college student to realize that.

This is blown all out ot perspective. This bake sale is a statement about the inequality of affirmative action. All students in state students should pay the same $ and out of state/country $$$. But when we look at where this is an issue is the left coast and the redistribution of wealth syndrome.

Also unsaid in this version of the article is the fact that this Bake Sale is based off of Berkeley’s own admission policy which grants special consideration to various minorities. All the student Republicans have done is put the school’s admission policy into something that can be applied in everyday terms that others would understand but also point out the hypocrisy of the administration. So granting admission based on gender or race is ok but selling brownies based on the same criteria is not.

I wish it were only all about money. Actually these sorts of “Discounts” apply to everything from SAT/ACT scores to GPA. Being a member of a designated class means the bar has been lowered in deference to the stereotype imposed by the feel good liberals. It is a back handed insult to minorities in which liberals are saying they need help because, well you know they just ain’t too ________.

As far as those playing the money redistribution game there is a hilarious video making the rounds where college kids are asked to give up some of their GPA to under performing students to “make it fair”. Needless to say there weren’t any who could draw a parallel between some hard working person giving up their money to others and them giving up their GPA for the same reason. And no they weren’t about to part with their GPA that they had worked hard for.

Great take on a policy that is not longer effective. College entrance should be based on achievement. A friend’s son had a 3.8 GPA, 1800 SAT, tons of extracurricular activites, but he is white and middle class. he got denied into a major GA school, however they accepted the 3 minority students with lower GPAs and SATs and who had few activities. What is up with that?! This bake sale is just a way to show how foolish many of these policies are. The big question, when whites are the minority in 50-75 years, will they get all of benefits that current minorities received today? I think not.

“If you’re going to compare the Bake Sale to Affirmative Action…the only way it would be comparable is if the flour, oven, and all baking materials were stolen from the people that are required to pay the lowest prices. And if the baked goods from all prior bake sales were made for free by the minorities while white students reaped all the profits…which resulted in unequal opportunities to purchase baked goods in the current sale.”

Well, the Left has always trotted around the canard that “everyone is equal”; but they’re the quickest to break that principal to advantage whoever their pitiful little hearts have empathy for, while seeking to hobble anyone they don’t like. All their precious class warfare is based upon it! If they really believed in equal treatment under the law, they’d be against a progressive tax system (for taxing at a different rate, is a breach of the equal treatment concept). So when they get an example of how their policies of selectivism are so satirically put in their face—they spew outrage. Well, notice this. If your ideas are BETTER, then you enjoy challenges for the opportunity to explain your case against the inferior idea. YET, if your idea is subpar—when challenged you may well turn to CENSORSHIP; so that your concept is protected from examination, and exposure to truth. So, from speech codes, to “fairness doctrines”, “hate speech” standards, and so on and so on…..take note that it’s universally liberals that seek to impose censorship.

It is so hard to sit here and not make a comment about this. First, let us look a who actually sold the the Blacks to America to start with. Blacks were sold to the American White and Black people from their own African folks. So, BOTH white and blacks owed slaves but you only hear about “Whitey or the Cracker” owning slaves. My Lord in Heaven, just how many years ago was that? What, do you really think that you can change the past? No matter what you do or say, you will never be able to take the hurt/pain away from anyone because of some poor mistakes that was made years ago.

Everyone knows that the most discriminated person in the US is the middle aged white male. Don’t believe me, look up the figures. Better yet, isn’t it time for all groups to come together and drop to our knees and pray that God reaches down and touches us and blesses us? Trust me, I know he can because I am a firm believer as well as a miracle of God. What to hear my story, well it will be coming out soon, I hope. I know, I know. There are going to be a lot of you out there that say there is no God or that I am a Jesus freak. Calling me a Jesus freak is just fine with me as I guess you can say that yes, I Love the Lord in Heaven and I have seen what Jesus can do when people pray. For those that do not believe in God or Jesus, please stop using his name when you decide to use a cuss word with it and when your time has come to leave this earth, please remember when you are burning in hell that it was your decision to turn your back on him to start with. He has never turned his back on you like I thought he turned his back on me. Again, I know there are a bunch of you out there that couldn’t care less what I say here and that is fine. You have to live your life the best way you know how.

Was this appropriate for someone to do, no it was not. Whether it was a White, Black, Asian, Mexican , etc…, Man, Woman, Mixed, it was not appropriate for anyone to list these prices out there they way it was done. If it were me, FREE FOR ALL! I pray that God touches this country before it is really to late.

Using race should have not been used as a qualifier. Using income would have been better. I find it humorous that people with no money or are on welfare are always screaming for “wealthy” people to bridge the income gap, where as wealthy people generally ask for fair tax rates. Sorry, but across the board taxes sounds fair to me. And if you are on welfare, I believe you should pay the same rate as the wealthiest Americans as you will be supporting the program you live on. What would be really great is if we could vote on our own tax responsibility as an individual. The same options are available for every voter. 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, 40%, 45% and 50%. I wonder how many people that scream the wealthy need to pay more would be willing to pay more themselves. Hypocrisy, thy name is You.

I’m amazed and saddened every time I read some person of color making it sound that all whites have been enriched by slavery. My ancestors came from Scotland, fought for the union, and have never owned slaves or been compensated in any way from industries and businesses that did benefit from slavery. So why should my children pay more to attend a school than someone else who is of a different race, nationality, sex, or religion? Why should they be denied entry to higher education because the spot is reserved for someone else who has not exhibited the same intellectual qualifications demanded from my child? I remember those that resisted desegregation saying that blacks didn’t really want equal treatment, they really wanted special treatment. Programs such as affirmative action, and the excuses that justify such a program, seem to be proof that they were right. I want to live in a world without preference, but if I must live in such a world, I will fight for a world that gives me and mine the preference. When pressed we will all believe accordingly. Fight for equality, not preference.

We can spend our entire lives attempting to erase past wrongs, and we should do so where possible, but we need to understand that life is inherently unfair and some wrongs cannot be fairly erased. Wrongs should be recognized and addressed. However, realize that it is counter-productive to attempt to erase wrongs by creating a whole bunch of new ones (affirmative action). Create equal rules and time will correct the inequities. Also stop stereotyping. Many whites face inequities and discrimination too. Some of us accept that we do not live in a perfect world and we work to better ourselves in spite of that. Lastly, realize that the process takes generations and be resolute, but patient. The inequity was centuries in the making, and as such, cannot be erased overnight. Rome was not built in a day.

This world will be a better place when we stop fighting for preferences that benefit or harm certain groups, forgive past transgressions that cannot now be punished as those that committed the wrongs no longer exist, and commit to treat others equally, without preference.

Joey M

I’m with DK. I would love to live in a country where everybody is treated equally. A country where race makes no difference. If you are qualified for a job, you get the job based on qualifications. Not because you are the piece to a quota. This is an America that Marin Luther King envisioned. An America that judges men and women on their qualifications. That hard work is rewarded. My relatives came to America in 1923 from Italy. We have never owned slaves. Never will own a slave. It’s ironic the people that demand racial stereotyping is eliminated racially stereotype me based on the color of my skin. As I said earlier, hypocrisy thy name is you.

The University of California at Berkeley would not let the military on campus because the military was against open homosexuality. But look it is ok to discrimminate to keep the democratic plantation happy. They need those minority votes. It is the school itself who is doing exactly what the students did here. The school is the one doing it and they are simply trying to get people to see it.
