Introducing the Apple iPlank

A fool and his money are soon parted, said poet Thomas Tusser in 1557.

iHope she got a receipt.

iHope she got a receipt.

Thanks to those who shop for electronics in McDonald’s parking lots, that idiom holds true today.

The Smoking Gun provides the details: Ashley McDowell, from Spartanburg, S.C., was at the fast food restaurant when two men asked her if she wanted to buy an iPad. They showed her a brand new iPad and told her they’d give her one just like it for $300.

She talked them down to $180 and they gave her a FedEx box from the trunk of their Impala.

Lo and behold, when she opened the box, she found out she was an iDiot.

Instead of a much-beloved tablet computer, she was the proud owner of a piece of wood painted black and adorned with Apple and Best Buy stickers.

Police say the scam is unusual only in that the crooks took the time to create a crude facsimile of the sold item.

Note: The original version of this story incorrectly said the men offered to sell a stolen iPad.

This is an update of the old scam where they offer to sell you some speakers so that they don’t have to take them back to the warehouse, and when you get home they have sold you a box of bricks.

She should have spent the extra $29.99 for the service contract in case her iPlank breaks down she can take it back to the McDonald’s parking lot and exchange it for another iPlank with no questions asked!

I for one do NOT have sympathy for someone who buys goods SPECIFICALLY advertised as stolen – this is like when I had to listen to a teenager plaintively cry that her boyfriend stole my phone fair and square – and I mean that – “But – BUT! He stole yo’ fone FAIR and SQUARE — you LEFT it OUT!” The phone was on the Customer Service desk, tucked into the indentation of the computer monitor at the desk. She was trying to demand the Retail Store price for that phone.

What is wrong with society today??? It’s like some people *believe* that theft is somehow appropriate!

Grrr – when I see people who contribute to theft cry over being stolen from themselves – I want to publicly humiliate them. Everybody loses out when someone is dishonest!

Only a story because it’s an iPad. In the 70’s the crooks would sell a VCR and the VCR box filled with rocks.

She deserves it. She could have gotten one from Wal Mart, but nope, she chose to get one from criminals. Of course, they may not have been criminals, but scam artists, who take advantage of the stupid. That shouldn’t be a crime. If you’re stupid to fall for it, you deserve it.

Reminds me of the time several years ago when a co-worker bought a mini stereo from a guy at Home Depot. He brings the box back to the office and exclaims he bought this $500 stereo new-in-box for $150. He opens up the box (which had been resealed fairly authentically) and pulls out a rock. Naturally, we spent the rest of the afternoon rolling on the floor laughing.

Serves her right for buying stolen merchandise. If there wasn’t a market for stolen goods, thieves wouldn’t steal them. The police should have charged her with receiving stolen goods.

Good lesson for her. There would be a lot less stealing if “honest” people wouldn’t buy obviously stolen goods.
