Sesame Street: Bert & Ernie just ‘friends’

Sesame Street denizens Bert & Ernie are just friends, according to an anonymous spokesman for the eternal children’s program, and will not be getting married.

Just pals.

Pals.

“Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics … they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation,” said Sesame Street on its Facebook page Thursday.

The statement was made in response to an online petition calling for Bert and Ernie to get married.

Bert and Ernie could not be reached for comment because they are not people.

SERIOUSLY?! I’m cracking up at this! I loved Sesame Street as a kid and Bert and Ernie were favorites. Never in a million years, even as my children have watched more recently, would it have occurred to me to question their “sexual orientation.” This is as silly as folks claiming that the Teletubbies were gay! People need to get a grip!!

WTH? Really, these are innocent children that will be influenced by this madness. The world is truly coming to an end. The gay and lesbian population seems to think their lifestyle should be a part of everything. Well it shouldn’t be. What you do on your own time is your business. Don’t try to inject it into everything. You got your wish to be married in some states. You got your wish to repeal don’t ask don’t tell. Sit down somewhere already. Parents, we have to be more diligent in monitoring what our kids watch because this Bert and Ernie marriage situation will eventually happen. . . .

Come on people!!!! This is crazy that someone would even think of doing something like this. Have you not heard of the “Odd Couple” two men that lived together and were friends and roommates. Nothing more, Nothing less. I can tell you that if the television starts to teach our children about sexual orientation or even how to treat people of different orientations, than we are in trouble. Teaching starts at home!! Maybe if the parents teach their little ones how to teach other that may or may not be like them, this world wouldn’t be so damn crazy. Get it together people… What a sad world we live in!!!

Be gay if you want to or even if you feel you can’t help it. But for all our sakes, sit down, be gay and shut up. It is sickening that this has even come up between Bert & Ernie. And is it sad that 2 members of the same sex who are really good friends are automatically assumed to be gay. I am a Christian and will not treat you any differently than I would anyone else. I will not judge you but leave the judging up to God but please stop lobbying to make everyone and everything a gay thing.

God may have chosen your sexuality… but that means that he also chose the sexuality of everyone… gay and straight alike. In god’s eyes, there are no mistakes. Everything is created with intent. It also is said that God is the only one that can judge… I am not sure what people are thinking… judging others is clearly Gods work. Are you above God, and that is why you have decided to take on his duties? I think not.

so men on The Odd Couple were gay as well? I always thought that Bert and Ernie were modeled somewhat after that show. How have we gotten to a place in our society that two same-gendered people can’t be roommates and friends without everyone thinking they are gay? It used to be common place for old bachelors to live together. Nothing sexual, just sharing a space (and the rent) and having someone around to talk to if you wanted to.

God didn’t make anybody gay. According to His word, homosexuality is a sin. God hates sin, so why would he create us as homosexuals? That would make Him a hypocrite and a liar. Homosexuality is a chosen lifestyle.

And where in any of my posts did I say anything about judging anyone or being above God?? I’m not judging anyone cause its not my place. However it is my place to rebel against the homosexual’s community attempt to inject their lifestyle into something I feel strongly about. Just like they have rights, hell I have them too.

If you look at the overall concept of the show, it’s to teach kids numbers, letters, kindness, to be helpful, etc. And if Bert and Ernie are to teach kids that it’s okay to be friends with people who are different from you then why are people turning it into something it’s not meant for.

For those people who want to have Bert and Ernie come out of the closet, you just have too much time on your hands to be reading into their relationship. Maybe you’re the one who needs to come out and is using Bert and Ernie as your outlet.

What you have is an insecure segment of the population trying to force an agenda down the throat of the rest of America (no pun intended). Homosexuality is a choice acted on by the person. It is a sexual preference choice. I prefer blonde women. Does that make me born a racist? It’s my preference. Maybe I need special rights as well. While God spells out the sin of homosexuality in Genesis, Jesus confirms it in Mark. Remove the religious viewpoint and you have a scientific view that we are designed to procreate and propagate our species. Man and woman are the two human forms designed to procreate and pass on humanity. Anything beyond ‘design’ is a mutation and flaw. Chastise me all you want but from a biological and scientific perspective, homosexuality is a flaw in evolution and would by process eliminate itself.

Quite simply – why do people have to be so obsessed with how a person (or puppet) chooses to rub his or her naughty bits while in private? It is their character and how they comport themselves in society that matters. Are Oscar Wilde’s plays somehow better when you discover he likes to rub his parts with other men? Did Jimmy Page’s guitar solos become less musically adept due to his rumored obsession with rubbing parts with certain animals? If Mother Teresa went home after helping lepers all day and impaled herself on an anatomically correct Ronald McDonald statue, is that what is important about her? No. So get over yourselves and accept people for the content of their character and quit telling everyone how you choose to rub your parts, because it just does not matter.

Bert is not a christian or gay- just because I don’t approve doesn’t mean I hate. However the argument that people should be tolerant of others because they are “just being me” does not hold water. You don’t approve of me having sex with a horse?? Why? Because it’s unnatural? Disgusting? Immoral? Doesn’t make sense? Hmmmmmm… Since the idea of man and woman was in order to procreate with a partner in the bond of marriage…

Texican- God made Charles Manson, what’s your point?? Are you trying to argue now that God purposely made serial killers?? Further proving the argument that you are born and then become a product of your environment. God made man, what man does with their life (the choice of free will) is just that, his choice. God did not make drug dealers and serial killers any more than he made gays and lesbians.

Saying that you were “born this way” exempts you from the guilt of knowing that at some point something happened to push you in that direction.

Bill

Texican – I recommend you reading the Bible. He didn’t make ‘gay’. He didn’t make the paedophile, the adict, those with violent tendencies, etc. These are all the effects of sin. We are designed by God and His original intent has been soiled by sin. Read the first few chapters of Genesis to see what the intent of both man and woman were. Please show me where God has said anything other than that is acceptable. Nowhere in His word is your view held in a Godly manner.

I think it’s funny that so many people are so up in arms over a t.v. show. What’s really funny to me is that people don’t even realize that the whole thing was started on facebook as a joke. I’m pretty sure that the people who started it have no “Agenda” it’s just sophomoric humor and everybody is about ready to declare armageddon over a joke.

People we’ve got our government tanking our economy, a congress that can’t agree that water is wet because it may erode their political position, terrorism running rampant, good middle class families going to financial ruin and on the streets and you’re worried because somebody may CARE that Bert and Ernie were gay or straight..c’mon folks

First – many of you here, especially those who keep reciting the Bible, don’t seem very Christ like to me.

Second, hey @Bill – heterosexuals who are sterile are “a mutation and a flaw” as well? What about heterosexuals who choose to not procreate at all?

For the record, and please try and wrap your brains around this, I did not choose to be gay. I was born this way. I have (still, even at 40 years old) a Mother and a Father who were both very instrumental in my upbringing so not only was I born gay, I wasn’t the result (as some of you thumpers like to believe) of a female only household or absentee Father.

Why in the world would someone choose to spend their life as a target of the hatred and vile that’s so evident here in these comments? So don’t tell me anything about a “choice” – you don’t know what you’re talking about. You just sound angry and scared.

Matt – You didn’t choose to be heterosexual in middle school. You happened to be heterosexual and realized it when your hormones kicked in during puberty. If you had been gay, you would have realized that and struggled with it in middle school precisely because people like you denigrate and belittle a fact of nature that people can’t help. What’s disgusting about you and a horse is that you’re making a decision for an animal that can’t decide for itself. Individuals who are homosexual do not wake up one morning and say, “man, I would love to bang someone of my own gender. I think I’ll try that today.” Also, your preference for blondes wouldn’t make you racist as blonde is not a race. It makes you discerning, you know what you like.

Cute Girl – just as your worldview is shaped by your religion, others’ worldviews are shaped by factors in their own lives. You simply misunderstand them because you are unwilling to try to see from their perspective. You also base your worldview on a text that was not passed down from God, but constructed by a group of powerful men in the middle ages so as to remain powerful and keep the peasants from revolting.

Bill – the only reason a minority population (LBGT) might seem insecure is because the religious right is on a constant path to remove, or prevent them from gaining, the same rights you enjoy as a heterosexual male. i.e. marriage and the benefits that go along with that – health benefits, emotional security, tax benefits, etc. In fact, every gay person I know is very secure in their sexuality and identity, even though they had to endure bigotry and hatred from people who want to control the lives of others.

I’m not gay, but I am all for equal rights. A person is a person is a person, and we all deserve to be happy in our lives.

And please – lay off that hate the sin-love the sinner-not judging you BS. Nobody is buying that tired old lie anymore. We know where you’re coming from, and we know we’ll never be able to pull those of you with your beliefs out to the edge of the world to prove to you that it isn’t flat.

To those who like to use the example that there are “gay animals” I would also point out many animals eat their young, eat their own feces, etc. Please don’t use animal behavior examples to justify human behavior. Again, from a religious and/or scientific perspective humans are in a higher order. This fouled up usage of comparing us to animals is very ignorant.

Getting back to the original point, there is clearly a disturbed segment that tries to shove ideology down the throats of others. Trying to force an agenda through non-political puppets really is disturbing. Seriously. The irony is that a single digit percentage of the population of this country has a far greater stranglehold on politics and culture than those of a far greater percentage. When we talk about representation on TV, we don’t see Indian Americans or Muslims represented. But we have over half of the shows on the television now including gay characters and talk on homosexuality. I could go on and on with examples. but delving into a childhood classic and telling the show they MUST rewrite two characters as gay? The sad thing is that this whole campaign is solely based on stereotypes. I guarantee you if I went around to every home or apartment saying two men or two women living together MUST be gay I’d be blasted, harassed, called bigot and who knows what other name. Strange that such stereotyping criticized by this group is actually being used to further an agenda.

He’s really looped and he claimed that he caught Ernie in a Man 4 Man chat room on the internet. Ernie had been cheating on him the last few years! I told him to go home and talk things out with Ernie. Bert walked away with tears in his eyes. Looks like they were able to put things back together. Grammar – do you know how many groups in this country are denied various “rights”? Not everyone in this country can get married. Not everyone can serve in the military. And so on and so on. Your line is a load. As far as being very secure, I’d disagree. Anyone who has to publicly shove their sexuality in other people’s faces is insecure – straight or gay. Anyone demanding attention based on sexuality is insecure with their sexuality. The person who just chooses to go on about their daily life without telling everyone who they prefer to have sex with is the secure one.

Rodney – your statement about the “lie”? You’re contradicting your own previous paragraph. You don’t know me or my thinking. So by default your back to back statements are hypocritical. Love the sinner hate the sin is not a lie. It is what God has done for us. It is what Christ lived for us. No one is perfect. We all live in sin, even those who are saved. But to know something is a sin and continually and defiantly live the sin after knowing that it is a sin and the consequences is where God draws the line. We will stumble. As long as we live here in this flesh, we will stumble. But if you choose to willingly stumble and to do so over and over – to give in to a fleshly desire rather than to give into God’s will and purpose, you, me, and everyone else will be judged on that.

Try to stay on point. Can a 13 year old consent to anything? Has marrying your cousin to the 1st or 2nd degree ever been legal? The answer is no. As last as 1989, in the State of Florida, it was legal to marry your first cousin. I know, I worked in the marriage license department in Polk County, FL. So, yes, it has at some point, and probably in most states, and certainly in the royal societies of Europe, to marry your first or second cousin.

Example: A passage in the New Testament that addresses same-sex intercourse is in Paul’s letter to the Romans where he writes, “For this reason God gave them up to degrading passions. Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error. (Romans 1. 26-17, NRSV)

If we read these passages carefully, we see it is not passion that is bad, but degrading passions. It is not intercourse that is frowned upon, but unnatural intercourse. In other words, if you are engaging in sex acts that don’t feel right for you, then you should stop. For a heterosexual, it would feel unnatural to engage in same-sex activities. But for a gay man or a lesbian, the opposite is true! For gays and lesbians, the natural thing for them is same-sex intercourse.

I think Benjamin Franklin punched the issue right in the nose when he wrote, “Sin is not harmful because it is forbidden, but it is forbidden because it is harmful.” The fact is that it seems like most Christians need to step back from their Bibles, take a deep breath, and just ask themselves what the issue really is here.

Jesus had it right. The bottom line is this: who is being oppressed and persecuted? Who is getting hurt? Rape is bad—it hurts people. Pedophilia is bad—it hurts children. Violence is bad. Killing is bad. Starvation is bad. Lying is bad. Stealing is bad. War is bad. Racism is bad. Sexism is bad. These things hurt people.

And homophobia, too, is bad. It also hurts people.

Men kissing men in consent doesn’t hurt anyone. And neither does women kissing women. If they are consenting adults, it’s all good. And if they love one another, then God blesses that relationship. God really likes it when people love one another.

And we should too.

Bert

Rodney – yeah the world is changing. If you are a Christian then you’d realize that it is not changing for the better. Jesus’ own words verify this. Sorry to hear a Christian say the words coming straight from God’s Word are myopic. Feel sorry for me all you want. I am secure in my spirituality. God’s intent became distorted by sin – which is nothing but deviation from His intent. Like Bill said, sin is sin. People are telling you what God’s intent is NOT how you feel. Feel free to accept that or not. Feel free to argue with God. But to call yourself a Christian but then call Christ’s words myopic are a little confused in logic. You cannot pick and choose parts of God’s will and word but then call yourself a follower of God.

Keep speaking and tanding on Truth!

Sadly, my brother died of AIDS from being gay, if he were alive today he would tell people he made a serious mistake as opposed to what God had in store for his life. He would also say it was choice he made and had to suffer the consequences. He would also say I do not hate anyone. God allows people to make choices. I’m not the judge of people’s choices. No one make all the best choices. This world is about to reap some serious consequences for choices that leave God out. The prewritten prediction of fear, uncertainty, corruption, sensualilsm… it is because in general our choices do not include God’s word. we want the best of life in our own wisdom and terms. then we want safety, security, prosperity, jobs… and wonder why it is all disappearing.

Being gay is not a lifestyle that everyone chooses to live. As a gay, black male it is hard to live in a society where the African American community finds it taboo and then you are ridiculed by the church all because you find love in someone of the same gender. Hypothetical question: Why would I stand before GOD and say to him yes i want to be gay; i want the ridicule; to be picked on; to be outcasted by family and friends; to sometimes live a lonley life; i want to make life hard for me? Does that really make any kind of sense…

GrammerKing – I have a feeling no one read it.

You do not get AIDS by being gay. Point. Blank. Period.

Do some research about the percentage of people in Africa that have AIDS… and then tell me… do they have AIDS because they are gay?
You get AIDS by:

A) Sexual Intercourse. Both semen and vaginal fluid of infected individuals have high levels of HIV virus. This means that vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected individual can all transmit the virus successfully and to either sex

B) Drug Use. A needle used more than once by an infected individual to inject drugs typically harbors large quantities of HIV virus, both in the fluid that remains behind in the needle and in the hypodermic syringe. Anyone else that re-uses the syringe or needle will become infected. The use of intravenous drugs is itself dangerous both illegal and life threatening but if you engage in such folly, do not compound the damage by employing a used needle or syringe.

Consentual physical contact between two human beings for sexual purposes is indeed a choice. If it is not then we are animals acting only on impulse? I love the current “gotcha” phrase being toted by gay rights advocates. “When did you decide to be heterosexual?” They ask. The correct answer is everytime I choose to have sex with a member of the opposite sex. Sex is a voluntary behavior. Voluntary behavior never has been nor ever will be solely determined by genetic factors. Even Richard Dawkins…no friend of the Christian community admits that genes do not determine behavior. Nice try though. Do you really want people to think that you can’t help yourselves? Are we simply animals? Or is it much more honest to admit that is the behavior I would like to engage in? Having blue eyes is genetic. Some factors in attraction may be genetic. Behavior is choice.

As far as Bert and Ernie go. (A) They are puppets. (B) Can we not let children have at least a few years of innocence before introducting sexuality? Really?

Bill

Sashie – thank you for the theology lessons but your analysis is wrong. Unnatural in Paul’s eyes is anything beyond “God’s intent” as someone else said. I think the previously pointed out reference to God creating man and then creating woman clarifies God’s intent. Love and relationship is designed for man and woman to be each other’s help mate and to carry on the act of procreation. This is ‘natural’ to God and what Paul means. This is the expanded concept of marriage. Jesus in Mark 10 carried on this same logic – so both the Father and the Son confirmed this in both Testaments. Paul was a man of the Torah. He is consistent in his thinking and in his apologetics in this matter. Again, unnatural is something outside of God’s design, intent, and will. Man on man and woman on woman relations is counter to God’s purpose. Just because you call it ‘love’ does not mean God condones it. David loved Bathsheba. God condemned this ‘love’. God condemned adultery even if it is love.

It is a regulation for a practice that was already happening. It provided for the basic treatment of young poor women and poor families who could not afford to live without engaging in this. It was not chattel or sex slavery and if the girl was married into the family she was no longer a slave.

Slavery was permitted in the Bible because of sin in the world. It existed before the Jews were formed as a nation and it existed after Israel was conquered. God allows many things to happen in the world such as storms, famine, murder, etc. Slavery, like divorce, is not preferred by God. Instead, it is allowed. Where many nations treated their slaves very badly, the Bible gave many rights and privileges to slaves. So, even though it isn’t the best way to deal with people, because God has allowed man freedom, slavery then exists. God instructed the Israelites to treat them properly.

* The Bible acknowledged the slave’s status as the property of the master (Ex. 21:23; Lev. 25:46),
* The Bible restricted the master’s power over the slave. Ex. 21:20).
* The slave was a member of the master’s household (Lev. 22:11)
* The slave was required to rest on the Sabbath (Exodus 20:10; Deut. 5:14)
* The slave was required and to participate in religious observances (Gen. 17:13; Exodus 12:44; Lev. 22:11).
* The Bible prohibited extradition of slaves and granted them asylum (Deut. 23:16-17).
* The servitude of a Hebrew debt-slave was limited to six years (Ex. 21:2; Deut. 15:12).
* When a slave was freed, he was to receive gifts that enabled him to survive economically (Deut. 15:14)

While in a free country everyone is free to make their own choices so long as it does not effect the ability of other to do the same, let’s face it – gay people are mentally sick and perverted. Its Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. At its basic roots, sex exists to reproduce. If the option of homo or hetero was natural, then either would be possible for reproduction. Its not and thus gay sex is a perverted act. No different than having sex with animals, reproduction is not possible.

Especially considering the very special 1988 episode of Sesame Street where Maria & Luis were married on the show. Taking that into consideration, it would be appropriate, acceptable, and about time for a same-sex “real human” couple to be introduced on the program.

For years, people have cherry picked Bible verses to reinforce and justify prejudice; focus instead on the larger truth.

Bill, you are preoccupied with Paul. But Christ didn’t mandate following Paul’s orders as the way to live a Godly life. Christ didn’t say that the only way to God was through Paul, but through Christ. Christ was the Son of God, not Paul.

And what did Christ say about homosexuality? Nothing.

Not Cute Girl – If you actually read my posts you would have seen I was NOT preoccupied with Paul. My examples were of God the Father and God the Son. My reference to Paul was in response to another poster. Please, if you’re going to respond to my post make sure you actually read it and stay in context. As I said, read the story of creation of man and woman – and of God’s purpose for the two in relation to helping each other, supporting each other, what love actually is, and the purpose of procreation. Where in context is there anything different than love other than between man and woman? God defines love, marriage, relationships all there. As for Jesus please go to Mark 10 and see where Jesus actually reinforces the exact same story and to relate to marriage as well. God has clearly defined what love is and who it is to be between. His intended purpose is spelled out clearly. Anything different from this is not within God’s intent. Christ did not say a lot about a great many things. But as God’s Son he reinforces what God the Father already said prior to Christ coming incarnate. Christ did define love, relationships, and marriage. He defined God’s purpose for man. If you think differently you are free to do so but please do not put words in His mouth.

Kudos to Cute Girl and the other normal adults on here… the LGBT culture is going TOO FAR, trying to FORCE the rest of the world to accept their beliefs as “okay” and “normal.” Well, sorry gay community, we’re not buying it. Some of us have moral principles that we value more than your sexual orientation, so we will never accept your lifestyle as acceptable to our families. We are not mean, hateful, or angry about it… but our commitment to our Faith is a LOT stronger than a commitment to make you feel “normal” and “accepted” by ALL segments of society in ALL facets of life at ALL times. Sorry, that is utopia and it will NEVER happen.

You want to go to college, own a business, run for city council, have a movie career, adopt a kid, even get married in some liberal states, that’s fine… but you WILL NOT force me and my family to accept you as equal on moral grounds as what my faith and conscience tells me.

To Clemsondude at 1:58 p.m…. If you are going to invoke God, about how “God help those people who make sexual issues and immorality their sole focus and issue in life” instead of taking a condescending tone toward a mother who, God forbid, actually is taking a moral stand for what she believes and how she chooses to raise her family.

Funny how free speech, freedom of expression, tolerance, acceptance of all beliefs and value systems, etc. seems to be the mantra for liberals and the LGBT community, EXCEPT when it comes to those who choose to hold more traditional, conservative family values… THEN it’s okay to berate them for what they believe.

Tolerance is not making fun of someone’s faith just because you disagree with it. Tolerance is not using 5 year old language to attack those who differ from you. This is not even worth a conversation. I don’t run around yelling all day long that I’m a heterosexual. It’s nobody’s business. Neither is it my business if someone is gay. My best friend was gay prior to being taken by AIDS in the early 90’s. Yet he never yelled about it. He just lived his life as we all should, minding our own business. To think that someone even came up with this crap about Bert and Ernie speaks to the ills of our society. As if the idiots in Washington were not enough.

You all have the choice to change the channel. Have your kids watch Veggie Tales, an overtly Christian cartoon. Or Thomas the Train, which has conservative and capitalist underpinnings in its lessons. You can try to keep your children close-minded for as long as they live under your house, and many may continue to think YOUR way for their whole lives. There is, however, a good chance they will widen their perspectives as they grow.

I in now way mocked anybody’s beliefs, just questioned them. If your faith isn’t strong enough to take a few questions (and many of you answered them – thanks!), then you have no part in participating in an adult conversation.

Jeff – it’s funny, you said you were not angry, hateful or mean, but your next few sentences came across exactly that way…weird.

No Common Ground

August 11th, 2011

This bickering is pointless. The problem is that the starting points are too disparate for any communication to actually take place. The religious folks accept the Bible as the Word of God, others see it as just a book. It takes faith to believe in both positions. But if there is a sin at all here it is the arrogance to look at your own interpretation or position as the only one that has any validity. It goes against the spirit of Christ and turns people away from faith rather than towards it.

Just as James Dobson has done more to damage the message of Christ than anyone in recent memory with his arrogant dogmatism so do many of you who, while wrapping yourself in the Bible, don’t trust the spirit to work in the hearts of each man or woman so that they may come to an understanding of their own.

Does anyone really think that saying “Holler at me on Judgment Day. I promise I won’t say I told you so. . . .” does anything to bring people closer to their faith? It’s pure arrogance.

Thank God. There’s no reason to have to sexualize child-like and innocent characters like Ernie and Bert. Either straight OR gay, they don’t have to be sexual. Children of Sesame Street age don’t have to be sexualized whether gay or straight… This is just more of the gay community shoving their… agenda down everybody’s throats. I can’t even listen to classical music on public radio without them constantly pushing their agenda. I could care less what they do behind closed doors but they don’t need to air their sexuality in my face any more than I air mine in theirs.

Don’t talk about the “spirit of Christ” without understanding. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the light, and no man cometh to the Father except by me.” You imply that His was a spirit of “everybody figure it out for yourself” and that misrepresents Him. Those words are not ambiguous.

You don’t have to believe in the Bible, but if you don’t you really have no knowledge of Him, because that is how He has chosen to reveal Himself to Man. So if you reject the Bible you have no knowledge of Him except your imagination.

Try His book! You might be surprised at what you learn of Him; there is a lot of grey areas in there, but most of His teachings are clear. Maybe he drew you to this blog to spike your interest!

GrammarKing – come up with your own gay cartoon. Don’t sit there and threaten or intimidate other cartoons and shows to change ideologies or adopt an agenda which has NOTHING to do with the show. My children are taught the values from the Bible. If you don’t like that, have your own children and teach them differently. Don’t design a society to conform people to your beliefs. Nazis, fascists, and Communists do that. Or maybe this is what you like.

My own faith is very strong. It is backed up by God’s word. What you posted is not questions. It was very condescending and in a mocking tone. The fact you used the phrase “close minded” proves my point. Judging from you going back and forth on mocking and saying you didn’t mock, I’d say you have some issues you need to resolve with yourself and what you actually believe. Perhaps before you come on here judging people and their “close minded” beliefs, you will in fact get your own straight and figure out the contradictory thoughts you’ve made on here.

Not to get off topic, but John Galt would be an agnostic or atheist like Ayn Rand and would not be writing about what Jesus said to make his points… I’ve read Atlas Shrugged at least twice and studied probably the whole Bible… and I struggle to reconcile the points that are contradictory between them because I subscribe to most of what Rand wrote except where it contradicts my faith… John, I like what you’re saying but I think you have the wrong pen name.

We will have to agree to disagree, Mark, but I understand your point. Ayn Rand was a sad human being, but she produced a work of fiction 57 years ago that was eerily prophetic and reflective of 2011 America. Unless I missed it, the characters have no faith- admittedly, their morality reflects that of the author.

I admire Atlas Shrugged for its economic and political values, with which I agree.

I must say that I believe that Christ would have a problem with our nanny state. He taught accountability and gave individuals responsibility to care for the needy, not governments. Left wingers like Al Gore who longs for a socialist society but gave $300 to charity a few years ago are typical; it is easy to be a do-gooder with someone else’s money.

I’m glad the Sesame Street rep responded the way he did. This whole situation is absurd. If God believes being gay is a sin, I’ll leave it to Him to judge them accordingly, but in the meantime, If you want to pull the Bible card, God says to love thy neighbor. He doesn’t say to love thy neighbor unless they X, Y or Z. Until He sees fit to judge them (if He chooses to do so at all), I will continue to treat gay people with the same respect, kindness and consideration they show me.

I don’t know if being gay is a choice. I have gay friends who claim to have been born gay, and some that openly admit that they chose to be so. I’m not gay, so I can’t make that call. Live and let live – and leave Bert and Ernie alone. They’re puppets for crying out loud. Sex and sexual orientation (of any persuasion) has no place in a show intended for young children.

John Galt

I sign off with this final observation- a lot of people hate Christians, and a lot of people attack the Bible without knowing very much about it.

Christians are constantly attacked as being intolerant, but our culture has accepted intolerance of Christians as a very acceptable practice.

Finally; many, but not all, in the gay community hate Christians not because they treat them poorly or unfairly- there aren’t a lot of Westboro Church nuts out there- but because they know that we accept as truth a Book that will never approve of their behavior. Their inability to be accepted by Christians appears to be maddening.

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. God’s grace is big enough to save gay people, too.

I don’t know if any normal person has mentioned this already because I don’t have time to read all 19 pages of comments. But, when did anything anti-homosexual automatically become “homophobic”? The word “phobia” means to fear something. 90% of this thread is complete rubbish. I’m not really concerned with what your mullah or your pastor or your rabbi tells you the correct configuration of genitalia during intercourse. What is relevant here is that it was never the intention of Sesame Street to make a statement about sexual orientation. There are actually a few species where this is exactly the case. They not relevant to our discussion, but are interesting little critters. For more information, look up “Penis Fencing.” Just make sure you keep Safe Search on while you do.

“They are called “reproductive organs” for a reason. Being gay is MOST DEFINITELY a choice.”

Because they are next to one another, I will assume those two statements are related. Is your logic here that because homosexuals are not using those organs to reproduce, being gay cannot naturally occur? Because while this appears true on the surface, there are reasons why individuals that do not reproduce can increase the fitness of relatives. It’s called indirect selection. Not only would it explain things like homosexuality, it also explains why humans live long past the age where they can have children.

No Dawglawyer, “God” did not tell her this at all! Man did. If it was not soo sad, it would almost be laughable! Gods word has been interpreted over and over throughout time to suite the needs of MAN at the time of each interpretation. 30so years ago I sat through a very enlightening study of the original Greek Scrolls. Part of that study involved language and what words meant and how they have evolved over time.

It was a very interesting study and it stripped away much of which I had been “conditioned” to believe. Yes folks, we ARE a conditioned people and it starts from birth from your own family, extended family, church, school, etc. We come into this world with absolutely no belief whatsoever and our belief structure is conditioned by those around us. Unfortunately, many, if not most, buy the bill of goods they are sold and never question anything as it must be right because momma, or (insert anyone who told you anything you believe) told me so.

God gave each and every one of us a brain with the expectation that we use it. He also gave each one of us a heart with the expectation that we follow it. He also created each and every one of us to his liking and loves every one of his creations the way HE created them. Sadly, too many live their lives being what others tell them they should be never using their brain to ascertain what is true and correct and never find themselves in their own heart to be able to follow as the heart directs.

I am thrilled with the God I know as he is not the condemning God I was conditioned to believe in. My God is loving, nurturing, gentle, abrupt when needed, allows me to make mistakes and shows me the path to correct them while still holding my hand and patting my back letting me know he is there and loves me and that my mistakes are okay. He also has a fantastic sense of humor! He sits laughing at his children much like a parent does when they see their child doing something silly. Right now I know he is sitting shaking his head and thinking, one day, yes, one day they will get it!!!

Live life like there is no tomorrow :-)

So there are gay people and straight people in this world…WHO THE F CARES? Is it affecting your daily life. Do gay people force you to watch them be gay? Do they have gay sex in front of you? Who cares if it’s a “lifestyle choice” or they were born that way, it’s their life, they can live it how they choose. Anybody who tells someone else how to live or condemns them using “the word of the Bible” just because they’re a little different is just covering up for their own deficiencies. Nobody is perfect and nobody else has the right to tell someone how to live. It’s their choice. I’m so sick of seeing everybody trying to push their agenda on other people, whether their gay or straight. This is a free country, correct? Or did something change and now we all have to be robots and live our lives the same as everybody else? Just checking.

Cute Girl–”You got your wish to be married in some states. You got your wish to repeal don’t ask don’t tell. Sit down somewhere already.” This would be the same as telling African Americans that they can now drink from the same water fountain as Caucasians, aren’t you happy yet? What you fail to realize is that equal rights are still a problem in this country for many minorities. Ignorant folks such as yourself probably do not identify as a minority, therefore, you choose to say, “Doesn’t affect me and my sheltered life.” You have bigger hang-ups than just Bert and Ernie.

From most of the posts I’ve been reading, Gays and lesbians ask for and demand tolerance because of their sexual orientation. Yet these same people do not want to be tolerant of those who do not agree with their sexual orientation. These same people do not want to be tolerant of someone’s religious beliefs because it does not agree with their line of thinking or lifestyle. If you believe a children’s show should be more diversified, produce one. Leave Sesame Street and the Muppets out of it.

As for all the Sodom and Gommorah comments- the problem wasn’t homosexuality, it was that the cities forgot to take care of the poor and the sick, they were lazy, and arrogant jerks see Ezekiel 16:49-50 “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

Really? The gay & lesbian community has demanded of US for years to stay out of their bedrooms, but really they want to to keep looking. I truely believe that there are people that are born gay, but what we have now is a push for a lifestyle that is mainstream. There is truely a population of screwed up young adults that “thought” they were gay and led a bi-sexual lifestyle, that finally came to the realization they were straight – screwed up sexually but straight. All it takes is for someone to put the thought in your head you might be gay, and the sex drive takes over. These folks will never know right from wrong to some extent.

The Gay, Lesbian and Bi community better cool their jets a bit. You start messing with mainstream American children and you are likely to see a backlash. Most Americans have been tolerant and accepting, but you are going to reach appoint where enough is enough. Someone, anyone tries to mess with my kid and convince them he/she is gay/lesbian better watch out. Bless your heart if you mess with my straight kids!

Then why do soo many of you use such a wide broad brush slamming the entire gay community over the actions of a few? This is not something done to just the gay community either. A few folks of color do something wrong and it is said, that is what is wrong with the black community. A Few (insert anyone here) do something wrong and then (the folks inserted) get the whole blanket treatment as well. The actions of a few does NOT represent the actions of all as a whole, never did and never will.

This petition sponsored by change.org is hillarious. Do you really expect to be taken seriously when you make silly demands of a beloved childrens television program? A quest like this will do more harm than good, but hey – knock yourselves out! Sometimes people should really stop and think before they act. One can become their own worst enemy when demands like this take place.

In a quest for more acceptance, what they have probably done is created more intolerance. Not all publicity is good and you really have no one to blame but yourself when it backfires (or fizzles out).

Ok, first I thought this article was funny. Im almost 40 and Ive already heard rumors about Bert and Ernie. Second, some of the comments on here disturb me. I believe it is ok for TV to teach our children about other peopls lifestyles and to be accepting of them. The whole “learning begins at home” statement backs up my belief. We have too many bigoted people/parents in the world who teach their children about hate and violence rather than acceptance and love. Maybe if they did teach about acceptance there would be less suicides and murders that the youth is going through now.

If Bert and Ernie want to be gay GOOD FOR THEM! I hope they do come out of the closet and get married. If you dont like it, no one is forcing you to watch it.

You can not teach a person to be straight, gay, lesbian, or transgender. There is no mechanism for reinforcement to alter a persons identity on such a deep level, in my opinion. However, being exposed to sights of happy gay people will inform children that being homosexual is not some evil part of life that needs to be shoved into a corner, minimized, and whispered about in hushed terms of utter hate and discontent, but rather a natural biological impulse the same as heterosexuality. The religious fringe need to take the first large step in the right direction by admitting that they are no longer the defining moral compass for this planet. People have broken free from the aeons of oppression and we have moved above and beyond. We no longer need these outdated codes that were invented to suppress the lower animal in us all. I think that as a whole, humanity is ready, or almost ready, to ascend. It’s up to each of us to do our part. It’s so easy if you look without your eyes.

As a teacher and gay male who is comfortable with his lifestyle, sexuality, and sexual orientation (which are three totally different things, CuteGirl), I have to note that it’s a little silly for people to infuse the show’s primary intent with subjective bullcrap that pertains to sexuality, lifestyle preference, or anything like that, especially when that age group can’t properly assess issues such as this one.

It’s important to teach kids that everyone is different in many ways, but it’s also dangerous to assume that sexual preference should be the ONLY thing that makes someone different than everyone else. My life is my business, and I don’t aim to “teach” anyone how to live a life of homosexuality. Hell, there are many heterosexuals who insist that there are lifestyle choices that only “heterosexuals” make. Does my lifestyle keep me from paying my bills or doing my job well? It hasn’t yet, and I don’t think it will. Differences are differences! Teach kids to be discerning, self-reliant, and self-sufficient thinkers, parents! It’s not all that serious.

If he can save us, why has he left us to our own devices since our beginning? You say homosexuality isn’t natural? Well we’re all a product of nature, so obviously it’s natural. What isn’t natural is marriage. Have you ever seen two animals in wedlock? Most animals will as soon kill there spouse and children than spend the rest of their life with them. In fact, however, there have been the obvious observations of animals that show no interest in what they’re mating with. Most animals are known to “hump” pretty much anything. You can slap that dog away all day, but as soon as you turn around he’s going right back. I digress. My point is that it’s not up to us to decide what’s best for anyone else unless it directly affects the survival of the whole. Murder, rape, and theft are things that hurt everyone. Homosexuality hurts no one. The only person hurt is yourself. You constantly judge and condemn. You don’t even realize that you’ve given up any chance of hope, happiness, or freedom. I weep for these people that are so full of contempt and hate. You’ve whisked away this life that was freely given by trying to take away the freedom that others try and enjoy. I plead to anyone who has anger in their heart to let it go. No happiness can be found in the attempted forced salvation of others. Help those who want it, guide those who are lost, lend your hand freely to any who needs it, regardless of race or creed. We are all sons and daughters of the same One, or whatever you’d like to call it. I believe it’s time we start acting like it.

People are still on here hating on me! Wow! So much love! LOL!

People usually do tend to hate the truth when it doesn’t line up with what they believe to be true. For all those who misunderstood me, I can believe what I want to believe. I believe homosexuality is a chosen behavior and a sin. That is my right. The gay and lesbian population believe they were born that way. That is their right to believe that. Frankly my dears I don’t give a whoot-nanny what you do in your bedrooms, but when you try to inject that lifestyle into the minds of innocent children, then I do have a problem with it. As far as turning to the TV channel to something else? You better believe I will. I am very diligent in monitoring what my children watch on TV. But I do realize I can’t always monitor what’s being fed into their minds when they are at school, a friend’s house, etc. That is why I will raise my voice and stand up against anything that goes against the word of God. And if that means being ridiculed, slandered, talked about, disliked, hated, then I wear those compliments as a badge of honor.

I really think this has gone to fare when we start saying Cartoon Characters or Puppets from a children’s show (which is what Sesame Street is) are gay. We have all watched Sesame Street as kids growing up and I never thought in my entire life that Ernie nor Bert were Gay men. I am so so tired of having the gay life style shoved down our throughts and being told we have to except it. If they want to be gay that is fine. I have no problem with it until they start trying to make every straight person out there into a gay person. I also hate hearing everyone that is gay say they are born that way. You were not born that way. God did not make you gay. Something happened in your life that made you some where down the line choose to be Gay. God created Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve. You have a right to live your lifestyle but stop trying to cram it down everyone’s throats that you are gay and maybe people will except your lifestyle a little more. As a heterosexual I don’t try to crame my lifestyle down your throat and I don’t go out in public kissing and groping all over my husband so other’s will see like a lot of gay’s especially young one’s do. I don’t care to see that from any couple gay or straight.

I completely agree that is stupid to assume that just because 2 members of the same sex are really good friends, that means they are gay. Just like its is stupid to say that 2 people of the opposite sex are having sex just because they are good friends. And I understand Sesame street saying that they are puppets and don’t have a sexual orientation. However, making Ernie and Bert a gay couple would be a great example for kids so they wont grow up to be hateful homophobic bigots like some of these commenters. It would be an awesome groundbreaking example. I don’t understand people with anti gay views. As a human being, a sign of intelligence is putting yourself in other people’s shoes and understanding others. Just because you are white, American, straight, tall, or rich does not make you inherently better than anybody else. People need to educate themselves. The Bible is not the end all be all. Remember it was written by men (Not Jesus himself) with their own biases and fears, as evidence by the puzzling nonsensical stuff written in it.

Grammarking…how is it not possible to teach your children tolerance of an individual without having to accept their lifestyle choice. Just because one accepts another as an individual person doesn’t mean one has to engage in the same lifestyle/behaviors as that other. I have gay friends who are wonderful, caring people…but I’m not going to have a lesbian relationship because of it.

Generally-speaking: To call yourself Christian is to understand what is right/wrong per the Word of God; we all have the option to follow His word or not follow it…but you are also choosing whatever consequences follow your choice/actions. I’ve read most of the comments on this post…some I agree with and some I don’t but in my opinion 100% of what we read in the Bible is interpreted in our own manner…interpretation may be affected by desire to live our lives the way we want and make it seem okay so the anticipation of consequence no longer exists or affects us. If you feel you are living a Christian life, gay or not, then the only thing you have to worry about at night is whether or not the goal you wish to reach within your Christian lifestyle will be met when you reach the end of your road. If one is secure in that, then nothing anyone posts in this forum should affect you enough to have to comment back…but if you think you may be swaying or have fallen off the Christian path there is nothing wrong with trying to right your wrongs and continue down the right path.

Whether another agrees or not…it is still my opinion. And BTW..this forum is based on.the presumed sexuality of puppets? Really? Puppets?!?!

Yet another news story designed to distract Americans from the real problems in this country. If this is considered news, then we definitely have plebes working for our mass media. What’s even better are the plebes that are going to talk about homosexuality being a “choice” and how this may influence their child’s decisions about their sexuality. Just a question, when did you choose to be straight? Oh, you can’t remember because you didn’t make a choice. Being gay or straight isn’t a choice, it’s who a person is so accept them. Just an observation – but why is it that everyone thinks it’s okay to tell homosexuals to “shut up” about their “lifestyle choice” and stop “ramming it down our throats” and then go on to tell everyone else that they are doomed to hellfire and damnation; quote a bunch of things from the bible which is in essence merely a manual for their “lifestyle choice”. No – I’m not gay. I’m very straight, but I’m also wise enough to know that I don’t know everything, and therefore I am in no place to judge others. I’m not saying the religious folks are wrong in their beliefs – how would I know? I’m just saying that none of you know FOR SURE that who one chooses to love, so long as it be between 2 consenting adults, is wrong. Just stop and think before you post … are you maybe the pot calling the kettle black?

I am a 33 yr old gay man in a 14 year relationship with my partner. My 5 year old nephew lives with us and yes he knows that we are gay…..doesn’t really understand but as he gets older he will gradually get it.He does however know that it is ok to love whoever he wants to love without judgement. I did not teach him this , his mother and my mother did ! It amazes me when people say this is a choice …. as if they chose to love the opposite sex ….the truth is they didn’t ! You can choose the person but you can’t chose the sex you are attracted to ! It is proven that this is genetics. So when one person says ” Im not teaching my children that gay, lesbian and transgender are okay .” thats fine, it’s your perogative ….but watch what you say because it could come back to bite you in the butt later when your child tells you he or she is gay. Also the word “hate” mentioned above in another post is such a powerful word …..it does more damage than you think . I treat that word in my house as a curse word.
As for Bert and Ernie …..Im ok with them just being friends because thats all kids need to think they are until they are old enough to understand ……and I think a kid is old enough to understand when they begin to ask about it .

This may sound insane, but the LGBT agenda is to indoctrinate their lifestyle on the most innocent of society..children. Why do you think the gays got Gov. Brown to sign a law in Calif requiring gay people who have made some kind of contribution to society, be included in textbooks beginning at the kindergarten level? Because if repeated over and over during their schoiol years, they will be fully swayed by the GLBT people that gay is okay, sodomy is normal and regardless what your parents or church teaches, they are wroing. Gays want their lifestyle forced on and in every area of society. They say they are oppressed, bullyied, no political clout and need special protections. Unfortunately our President is hell bent on pushing gayism on america under the guise of equality. The Bible says that “Righteousness exalts a nation,” NOT EQUALITY!!! If equality is the issue, then polygamy must be given the same protection, and incest relationships should fall under “equality” also. God established marriage not the state.. If God is OK with gay, then he messed up with Adam and Eve, and he is NOT omniscient, and has no clue what is best for his creation. The truth is, God is NOT MOCKED. You can choose to live by God’s law and receive his blessings, or violate his law and receive his wrath. That’ was the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah, and looks like the United States is headed in the same direction…with Obama leading the way..

RE: god’s word…

The bible also indicates that we can own slaves and gives explicit laws regarding how it should be handled if we beat them. It provides laws regarding selling ones daughter as a slave. It also states that anyone who strikes or curses his parent shall be put to death, so I feel for you if you ever had any arguments with your mother. And I certainly hope you don’t like your steak rare, because anyone who eats blood will be cut off from his people.

If you choose to take the bible literally, It would probably be in your best interest to actually read it to find out so many things that are and are not allowed.

Your comment has nothing to do with anything I’ve said. Please stay on topic if you going to address me. I don’t understand gibberish.

Momofsix:

1) I can’t afford or find a slave due to the federal labor laws.
2) Nobody can afford my asking price for my daughter as a slave.
3) I’ve always been nothing but respectful to both of my parents.
4) I like my steak (and all other meat) well done.

Now what?

Everyone who thinks it’s wrong to be gay and that it’s a lifestyle choice peole can just switch on and off is just a narrow minded bigot. When did you decide to be straight? Is your sexual orientation something you consciously chose one day? Could you completely switch it off at will without just denying part of who you inately are? If your neighbor didn’t like it, would you pretend you are attracted to another type of person and suppress your true feelings, just to make them happy? I doubt it. So where do you get off expecting others to conform to your idea of normal? Why do you think they choose their sexual oriantation when straight people don’t? It’s not like gay people want to get persecuted by jerks like you. Clearly they don’t. So if it was just a lifestyle choice, you’d think less people would choose something that ostricizes them from the larger community, sometimes their family and even their religion. But people are still gay because they were born that way. I just look forward to the day that our culture has advanced enough that we are collectively embarrassed by people who think like you. Your views are as backwards as the old idea that being lefthanded was the work of satan and is therefore unacceptable. Someday our whole culture will see you for what you are – an intolerant, egocentric, hate-filled (or fear-filled) bigot who is an embarrssment to all civilized, enlightened people. We’ll look at you with disgust like we do the salve owners fo yesteryear and you’ll deserve it.

By the way, Cute Girl, MomOfSix is not talking gibberish. You’re just too dense to get her point. She is assuming that your hatred of gay people is based on the bible, since that is at least what most intolerant people cite as their reason. She is debunking that oft used but ill suported argument on the basis that the bible says a lot of things that gay haters don’t also adhere to. Therefore, using the bible to support an anti-gay stance is hypocritical unless you also support slavery, think it’s perfectly fine to sell your daughter, etc. Apparently that aregument won’t work on you because you are worse than a hypocrit. You seem to think it’s OK to be wned as a slave and seem to have no moral problem with selling your daughter, you just happen to also be so greedy no one would pay your price. I’m glad I’m not your daughter! You’re apparently pretty amoral! Maybe you and Hitler could have been buddies if you had been born at a different time in history.

Puppets don’t have a sex but gays only have one, none.

I’ve watched a number of people reach a certain age and make a decision to pursue this gay lifestyle which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. I was a choice. Maybe they are puppets when they do it?

How can genetics make people gay? gay parents? I think not. Where does the gay GENE come from, daddy and daddy or mommy and mommy? I have NO problem with people choosing gay,les etc But forcing us to belive that we do not have control over our actions is simply hiding from the truth that YOU do have a choice, and I will keep my choice! you can give your chice away, because gays don’t reproduce, unless they are bi? funny if born Gay but had kids in the past when did you choose to switch?

Anyone who says gay is born that way, simply does not realize we all have choices, and of course they are too STUPID to understand they too can choose, after all it is YOUR choice!DUH!

Saraphim:

Why don’t you read before you speak? Not once anywhere on this board did I say I hate gay or lesbian people. If you want to be a lesbian, be a lesbian then! I’m not now, yesterday, or any other day saying you can’t be. What I’m saying is that based on the bible I read, it’s wrong. All have sinned and fallen short of his glory. But what makes me different is that when I sin, I repent and I don’t keep repeating that sin. I’m not here to judge you. I’ll leave that up to God. I could really care less what you do in your bedroom, but you will not subject innocent children to it. Not on my watch sweetie.

Cute girl’s comments are not so cute. Why on earth would anyone choose to be gay? The thought of being with someone of the same sex is gross to me and that is because God made me straight. Others are born differently, it is the way God created them. If you don’t want to be with someone of your sex then don’t, but preaching hatred and intolerance is the most unchristian thing you can do in my opinion.

Clemsondude… It’s obvious that God has already helped those kids when He blessed them with a mother who is not afraid to teach them that there are moral absolutes despite pop culture’s attempts to defy and redefine gender and sexuality. Only in a Godless deceived world where right has become wrong and wrong right could someone have the mendacity to summons God’s help for a person who is clearly in agreement with what His word teaches about sexuality. It’s clear the only one without a clue is you… Dude.
