Girl trying to save sick pet dies in stolen car crash

Sometimes, the news I find is just sad.

A 15-year-old girl died Tuesday in a dramatic, ill-advised, effort to save her cancer-stricken dog from euthanasia.

Taylor Mae Stinchcomb, 15, died trying to prevent her dog from being euthanized.

Taylor Mae Stinchcomb, 15, died trying to prevent her dog from being euthanized.

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times, Taylor Mae Stinchcomb, 15, stole her family’s 2003 Dodge minivan and fled her Chicago-area home with her ill dog, Romulus, and a female friend, also 15.

When Taylor became too upset to drive, her unnamed friend took the wheel. Moments later, the friend lost control of the vehicle and crashed into several trees and a telephone pole.

The dog was thrown from the vehicle and died immediately. Taylor died of her injuries at a local hospital. The driver escaped almost without a scratch.

Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash, police said.

Police are not sure where the girls were headed or what they planned to do.

Taylor picked the dog out while visiting an animal shelter on her 13th birthday.

A high school freshman, Taylor is survived by two sisters, a brother and her parents, Bill and LeeAnn Stinchcomb.

This is so sad, for her, her dog and her friend who is now in trouble herself. My thoughts and prayers are with her family as well as her friend’s family. She was a beautiful young lady.

I have two children and if one of them took the car (without permission, apparently) there is NO WAY I would consider it “stolen”. Shame on the media for being insensitive, heartless morons for saying she “stole” the family car. And if the parents said it, they’re as insensitive, heartless as the media.

How about “took the car without permission”? See? That only took my five seconds to come up with and I’m not a news writer!

@Thoth: “Stole the car” uses fewer words, a prime concern when space is limited (assuming you’re coming from a newspaper writing point of view”. Your version has two extra word that are very long.

Speaking of editing: “Taylor had been picked the dog…”?

Thoth Amon… IT IS WHAT IT IS. “took the car w/o permission” its called theft. If she hadnt stolen the car, she’d still be alive. Poor baby, bless her heart. But if she took it without permission, by DEFINITION she stole the car. Just b/c the situation is tragic, that is no excuse to sugarcoat something so simple… is that all you got out of the article? Sensitivity isnt what the media is for… they just give you the facts. I’ll bet the police report says theft as well… cause thats what it was.

btw: pray for the friend that survived :(

My 13 year old took our car without permission. I can assure you, she stole it. She hit a house but thankfully they all made it out ok. Of course she was grounded for 8 years and now that she is 21, I have finally allowed her to get her license.

This situation is unfortuanate for all parties involved. There apparently were some misplaced priorities and not a lot of reality. I can understand that the teen was upset that her pet was going to be euthanized. However, her parents failed in teaching her that death is apart of life.

Some people are really missing the point here. How she obtained the vehicle really doesn’t matter, but what matters is that she and her dog died. to ‘Editor’: you’re suggestion that space is more important than accuracy is exactly what’s wrong with you and the main stream media of today… there’s is NO need to sensationalize the fact that this distraught child took the car… simply stating that she ‘took the car’ takes no more of your stupid precious space than your statement that she ’stole the car’… as a matter of fact it takes one less letter… and when your desire to save space overcomes your obligation to accurately and impartially report the news then – you fail … open mouth, change foot

The article makes reference to the police as if the writer has done sufficient research. It is the job of police to decide if criminal charges are appropriate to be filed against anyone, not the job of a sensationalizing media. ‘Stolen’ implies a crime which was not reported as pending charges in the article, and therefore is considered a passing of judgment from a media who lacks impartiality and prefers to add drama where it isn’t needed. Fail.

This is tragic but should be a lesson for all children/teenagers. Do not steal from your parents! We have become so pet/animal crazy that it is tragic all together. We care more for pets than we do our fellow human. The dog had cancer, when was the last time you heard that, if you grew up in the late 70’s early 80’s…we would have said, “it just died”! We move on, cry a few tears and get another pet, simple. Corporations want you to humanize these pets so that they can take more of your money.

EVERYTHING is bigger than it really is, more important..don’t you guys remember? Who knows what her desperate plan was. How absolutely awful! A child died trying to save a member of the family. Her parents had raised her right in caring for another living creature. Childish judgment and a terrible tragedy as a result. She’s not here to be charged with felony automobile theft or grounded…maybe you would have had her imprisoned until her 21st birthday or worse. And expecting a child to make an experienced, adult decision? None of you cruel and stupid people ever acted like a child at 13 or cared for something so deeply? If not, I feel sorry for you and for those of us sharing your world. If so, stop acting like jerks and remember what it felt like. You might not be such a jerk if you do.

DarkBrown

I am admittedly not an animal lover. However, I am a dog owner and a very responsible one at that. We walk her once, oftentimes twice a day. She is vaccinated, spayed and micro-chipped. We take her to be groomed regular, to obedience classes and we feed her the *expensive* dog food, mixed with the proper wet to dry ratio. Although she is a pit/lab mix and on the large side, she is a house dog – house and crate trained.

All that being said, she is just an animal. I do not value animal lives over human life as a rule. I do understand that sometimes, there are exceptions.

As a coach of girl’s softball for high school, I can easily see the thoughts running around in this girl’s head. Very emotional at that age. This is certainly a tragedy, especially for the girl who walked away without a scratch. She was probably just trying to help a friend in need and now has to live with the consequences for the rest of her life.

That being said, I now want to thank DAL and the other “negative” commentors in this thread. With the fourth of July approaching, it reminds me that we live in an AWESOME country and that we owe a lot, not only to our ancestors who fought for our freedoms, but for the soldiers giving their lives for our rights. This includes our right to free speech, whether or not it’s idiotic, moronic, religious, compassionate, or whatever. The right to debate whether is was “stolen” or “taken without permission”. The right to thump that bible.

So thanks, DAL. Continue to be your childish self. More power to you. Keep yelling from the treetops, maybe no one will notice the tiny brain and the other tiny things you possess. The men and women who are dying for your rights (and your right to abuse them as you see fit) don’t mind one bit.

I don’t agree with a word you say, but that’s ok. I have the right to express my opinion, as you do yours. And I’ll proudly shake the hand of every soldier I see thank them for their sacrifice. For the right for you to be a prick, and for me to call you one.

Knowing Taylor personally (I really do), I know why she did what she did. She was 15 and made a spur of the moment choices that turned deadly.

How many of us ADULTS have chosen to go for a drive after a arugument with our significant or other, perhaps you had one to many drinks but still drove home. See, we all have made a bone head decision too. We don’t think about the “what ifs” until they become a relaity.

Taylor was a great kid, stand out athelte and very involved in her church youth group, Impact.

She loved Romulus with all of her heart and I know she is worshiping with her savoir today. I also believe that she is running around with Rom in heaven as well.

I challenge you, the readers to have a heart! Love on your friends and family and reconnect with those who you’ve lost contacted with over the years and show them God’s love. That’s what Taylor would want for you.

She was young but she was far beyond her years. I’ve lost many of friends and family members but unfortantely no one has left quite the LEGACY that Taylor has.

I love you Taylor, you were the best “little sister” that I could have ever asked for. I’m thankful that your sister who loves you very much let me be apart of your life.

Rest in Peace Tay!

This is the saddest story i can recall ever reading. I feel for her and her family. On the other hand, when I was that age, I would have done nearly the same thing except for taking the car (I know I would have ben killed once I came back home-no exaggeration). But I would have run and hid with my pet (even though being beat half to death would have been the punishment). Having known how she felt about her dog (and probably all animals because that’s me all over again and still, even being decades older than she is now) I think her parents shoulda let her deal with the situation in her own way. The dog would have eventually died, or having seen the pain it was experiencing, she would have come around and asked for the euthenasia herself. And her parents shoud have used that time to prepare her for it. God bess her.

this is a horrifically sad story, but unfortunately-many to most of you missed the POINT! it’s more about the poor to no communication skills of parents today. something could have been said to avert the childs’ need to take a vehicle and leave….i recently moved to southern georgia (waycross) where the average age of conception is 11 and many to most girls begin having sex at 9. more than 30% of these young ladys are impregnated by their fathers. ppl still spit in their hands to wash them at resturants, still spit in cups and on floors in public buildings, and theres a city FULL of white women w/black eyes in public daily. to say the kids are affected is an understatement.

I am so sad for this girl. She had a good heart. Should not have died so young doing something while misguided was full of compassion. Life is never fair.

If your teen takes the car without permission, and you consider it “stolen”, that makes YOU a cold, hard retard and a lousy parent. Parenting requires copious amounts of love, and if you don’t have the capacity for it, do your future kids a favor and stay celibate!

Sure, it’s tragic. But this girl caused her own death, by virtue of having some weird and distorted sense of priority. What has happened to the NORMAL human ability of dealing with bad news and unfortunate realities?! These days, when young people get confronted by a reality that they don’t like, they WIG the F*&! OUT and do STUPID and often FATAL things!

GROW UP. EVERYONE has pets that die. Yes, it’s sad! But there’s nothing that can be done about it, so you ACCEPT it. You don’t go flying off the handle and engaging in irrational actions just because you’re upset — being upset is not a valid excuse!

Thoth, the only retard here is you. Just because what happened is sad, you want to change the definition of “stolen.”

And the fact is, someone screwed up in raising this kid — evident by the fact that when she was faced with losing her pet dog, she FLIPPED OUT and turned IRRATIONAL.

So, WHO are the bad parents? The ones that won’t tolerate having their kid steal and wreck their car, or the ones who raised a kid who would do that?

I’m not changing any definitions, only perception, and you idiot pjay are like too many Americans these days seeing the world in black and white. I love MY children and would never be such a cold retard that I would claim they “stole” the car. Obviously YOU don’t measure up to any decent standards.
