Forget global warming, ‘Little Ice Age’ to begin in 10 years

Global warming may mean beachfront property in Macon someday, but the Earth may have to go through a cold spell first.

Polar bears would have plenty of good eating if they'd made it to London during the late 1600s.

Polar bears would have had plenty to eat if they'd made it to London during the late 1600s.

Fox Nation sums up the complicated science with this low-key headline: Global Warming Be Damned, We Might Be Headed for a Mini Ice Age

According to the pocket-protector crowd at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society, the sun, due to reduced sunspot activity, is going to be a bit cooler soon.

When? Maybe as soon as 2021, or never.

How much cooler will the Earth get if sunspot activity decreases? No one knows exactly, but probably a fraction of a degree Celsius, which probably isn’t enough to lure another NHL franchise to Atlanta.

But, the last time such a thing happened, in the late 17th Century, the good folks of London were ice skating on the Thames and villages in the Swiss Alps were destroyed by expanding glaciers.

Wired Magazine throws ice water on the heated discussion with this exciting headline: Sunspot Drop Won’t Cause Global Cooling

At most, reduced sunspots will offset rising global temperatures for a few years, perhaps a couple decades, said NASA climatologist David Rind in the Wired article.

“To point to this as something that could in any way ameliorate greenhouse gas warming is folly,” said climatologist Michael Mann of Penn State University.

I guess I’ll keep the snow skis in the attic.

Puh-lease people!! Global warming has proven to be a farce. The ‘warmers’ have even given up the gig and decided now to call it ‘climate change’ so that ANY time ANY weather is out of a normal spring day; they can point to the evil humans (Americans only of course because we know they are the ONLY ones who actually polute!LOL) as causing this ‘earth destroying’ weather.

I have a new theory. The only global warming going on is caused by all the hot air these idiots spew out! Weather operates in CYCLES. There are mini patterns of about 11 year intervals over stamped by larger cycles of a 100 years or so. This is the earth’s way of renewing itself. This has how its worked since before the dawn of man.

Do we need to control our emissions, plant more trees, conserve our resources; YES- of course. Do we need to allow our Liberal politicians to use ‘global warming’ as a means of beating America back so they can move closer to their one World Order (headed by Obama, naturally); NO WAY!!

It is precisely the idiocy spewed by people like “observer” that will be the downfall of our civilization. This “move along, nothing to see here” mentality about our environment is the reason why we’ll have no effective movement towards renewable energy utilization until it’s far too late. Yes, climate moves in cycles…but those cycles aren’t moving from norm to norm as they have throughout history. Since the industrial revolution those cycles have been trending toward higher and higher temperature “norms” so we don’t get the same cooling effect as time progresses. Jeez, take a first-hand look at the science rather than listen to the Faux News “science reporter.”

It is precisely the parroting offered by people like “matt” that will be the demise of our economy. He is good at memorizing the ‘facts’ that he was taught but a good natural history student he is not. The planet has been much hotter without humans and it has also been much cooler without us. CO2 levels were much higher during many periods before mankind was even a tickle in a single-celled organism’s nucleus. Yes, we need to be better stewards of the planet. Yes, we could be a little cleaner with our act. But to attribute any changes over the last 100 years completely to anthropogenic causes using only about as many years worth of data is the worst type of ’science’ at all, the type that doesn’t question its results.

Giant selfish and squid are taking over the ocean and the rising temperatures are perfect breeding for them in the warm waters. Polar ice caps which help absorb the suns heat are melting. Trees which release oxygen through photosynthesis are being destroyed (here in Atlanta 200 acres a day) especially the rainforest in South America. April was the worst month for natural disasters in American history with each one causing over $1 Billion in damage.80 degree temperatures in April, or a freeze No spring or fall weather in Atlanta for the past few years it is either extremely cold or hot.90+ degrees everyday in June, severe drought wildfire in AZ, floods up North. The climate is changing, and it gets worse daily. Not to mention all the animals that are necessary for food chains becoming endangered or extinct. The government needs to start caring more about the environment not oil, money, greed, and stealing Earth’s natural resources.

How can Global warming be “proven to be a farce”?
This comment displays the lack of education and understanding by the public in general.
I am not a scientist or a science major.
I have, however, takin the time to study both sides of the issue and have read the accounts of the principle and evidence of the changes will are causing.
One of which is “Ocean Acidification”. That, without a doubt, is caused by our immense output of fossil fuel burning. Our carbon is being absorbed by ocean waters and this lowers the ph value, it becomes less alkaline or more acidic. Just the same as testing a pool water the ph value has great influence on marine life. It has become 30% more acidic since our industrial age started.
This will create conditions that will make it difficult to form hard shells and others reprofuce. This has happened so quickly these life forms will not be able to adapt.
So, folks I come in contact with that doubt the science, this is ONE that is proof we must stop using the atmosphere as an open sewer!
Forget about the climate, weather, it is not the overriding concern. Without a ocean that supports life, we ourselves will not live!

Oh Please!!!

So it’s back to another coming Ice Age. I remember the hysterical clamoring of impending doom from dropping global temperatures back in the 1970’s. And, of course, it was due to the wickedness of Man.
Then comes Global Warming. These wicked, evil humans are destroying the planet by driving SUV’s. More hysteria.
Now it’s “Climate Change.” Seriously, “Climate Change”?!? What, we know there is a problem and we know the cause is man made, we just don’t know whether it is Global Warming or another global Ice Age. But we do know it’s those wicked humans that are the cause.
Since I’m no scientist, would some of you “Climate Change” experts please answer a few questions for me?
1. What is the correct temperature for the planet? That way I’ll know if we are running a fever or if we have the chills.
2. How much of the global heat is from the Sun, how much is from the Earth’s core, and what is the normal amount of heat generated by each? This will help me know how much influence on global temperatures are not caused by the environment.
3. Since “greenhouse gases” are the villains in the Global Warming crisis, why are we not hearing more about methane gas as the source rather than CO2? The answer to this will let me know if we need to do something about cow farts (a major source of methane gas). Plus, I can make a fortune selling bumper stickers while saving the planet: Stop Global Warming – Eat Meat.
If you can’t answer these questions, please feel free to call me all sorts of names.

The problem started when you went to Fox Nation for a summary of the “complicated science”. The fact is–as anyone who has listened to actual scientists over the past few days, instead of denialists–the sun has been at a relatively low level of activity for many years now, yet the warming has accelerated. That’s because the greenhouse warming effects of CO2 are roughly 10 times more powerful than the cooling effects of a “weakened” sun. There’ll be no “mini- ice age”, nor even any cooling; GW will continue, unabated.

When I was taking geology in college back in 79 they were talking about the coming “Ice Age” back then. The global warming fiasco, started by dubious scientists/professors eager for research grant money came next. Of course the progressives and alarmists drank that kool-aid down with gusto and chastised anyone who dared disagreed with their “experts” or questioned their data/assumptions, or computer modeling, even when the experts were caught in their collusive scam via hi-jacked e-mails . When the alarmists predictions of rising sea levels due to the massive melting of the Arctic ice pac never panned out,( other than the normal ebb & flow) they changed their terminology to “Climate Change”. Well I guess we’ve come full circle because we are back to the Ice Age scam. Puhleaze! The truth is its always been about money and what the “experts”, ie: scientists and professors, can get the government or any other foundation to pay them to study the problem and recommend their prescriptions to fix it which always includes some type of anti-capitalist draconian measure akin to everybody turning in their cars and living on solar farms.
Al Gore got rich in politics but became a multi-gazillionaire when he perpetrated this mess of “global warming/climate change” unto the great unwashed. Well I will give up my SUV when you pry my “cold, dead fingers off of the steering wheel”. Signed: Too Fat to Ride In A Prius.

The biggest obstacle for sincere Global Warming acolytes is the Chicken-Little approach employed for decades regarding environmental catastrophies. Honest people who are genuinely concerned about the climate and environment have been infiltrated by anti-science, political hacks.
Anti-capitalists have championed the cause of Global Warming as a way to further their political agenda to the detriment of any real science. Now we (the public) are left with the unenviable task of sorting out the true science from the politicized science.
There are too many willing accomplices wishing to use Climate Change to further their socio-economic agenedas. This is how Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvineint Truth” has been used as educational material.
The majority of people want to be considered good stewards of the Earths resources, however, when hysterical claims are made, and then reversed, you wind up with Chicken Little and the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
Sincere scientists need to be dis-avowing these opportunists and get to the Correct Truth.

Absence of ice over the northern pole can be seen if people would look at maps of previous ice ages.
It is not one big blob of ice dumped on top of the planet like a topping on ice cream.

They are bands of ice in North America and Europe that sit lower than that.
Check the maps.

Disappearing ice at the northern pole can actually be seen as a sign of major climate shift towards cooling in those areas.

And I certainly don’t think that President Obama is trying to create any “World Order”. If you have proof, give evidence. I don’t think either major party is trying to do anything other than pad their own narcissistic pockets. But I also don’t think that humans are causing “Global Warming”. We’ve been warming since the last Ice Age. And the cycle towards the next Ice Age will continue. We may get slightly warmer before the cooling begins, but NY will be under a mile of ice in 100,000 years or less. Why are we humans so arrogant on one hand, and so self-depreciating on the other?!?!?!

What do the scientists say about global warming

June 16th, 2011
1:32 pm

Definitive Proof: Majority Of Scientists Do Not Support Man Made Warming Theory
Survey of peer reviewed studies reveals less than 50% of published scientists believe global warming is man made. More skeptics than advocates among scientific community while IPCC claim majority endorse the theory.
Steve Watson

A new survey of over 500 peer reviewed scientific research papers on climate change, written between 2004 and 2007, has concluded that less than half endorse what has been dubbed the “consensus view,” that human activity is contributing to considerable global climate change.
In direct conflict with assertions by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that a scientific consensus agrees it is 90% likely that man is responsible for warming, Medical researcher Dr. Klaus-Martin Schulte’s survey contends that only 45% support the theory and that is only if you include papers that merely lean towards endorsement.
Though the survey has not yet been released, the results have been submitted to the journal Energy and Environment, and science blog DailyTech has obtained a pre-publication copy which states:
Of 528 total papers on climate change, only 38 (7%) gave an explicit endorsement of the consensus. If one considers “implicit” endorsement (accepting the consensus without explicit statement), the figure rises to 45%. However, while only 32 papers (6%) reject the consensus outright, the largest category (48%) are neutral papers, refusing to either accept or reject the hypothesis. This is no “consensus.”
The figures are even more shocking when one remembers the watered-down definition of consensus here. Not only does it not require supporting that man is the “primary” cause of warming, but it doesn’t require any belief or support for “catastrophic” global warming. In fact of all papers published in this period (2004 to February 2007), only a single one makes any reference to climate change leading to catastrophic results.

The introduction and the summary of the IPCC’s report was written entirely by politicians under the mandate of the UN, the input of actual scientists was minimal. In addition, all sections that were written by selected scientists were edited to comply with the report summary.
Some of the scientists involved even admitted that the IPCC models failed to accurately predict climate change and that “none of the climate states in the models corresponds even remotely to the current observed climate”.

Survey of peer reviewed studies reveals less than 50% of published scientists believe global warming is man made. More skeptics than advocates among scientific community while IPCC claim majority endorse the theory.

“tired of misuse of term”, I don’t know what planet you live on. Maybe one run by the UN. But if you base your decisions on the UN’s policies, you’re sadly misguided. The underlying policy of the UN is to shift the world’s wealth from the US and other industrial nations, to third-world nations. It’s the “Robbing Hood” effect. The UN wants to tax the US and give it to Africa under the guise of Climate Change.

Wonder what happened to all the old 60s radicals and the old communists around the globe after the fall of communism? They simply joined and then hijacked the environmental movement. Why? Because the movememt is anti- capitalist, anti- U.S., etc. Take a look at the political background of a lot of people worldwide that are in green movements. You would be stunned to see how many of them were former communist advocates or far left people in their own countries and how virtually everyone in the green movement is far left on a political spectrum of issues that has nothing to do with global warming.

The day time high in south Georgia is currently around 70 degrees. The unemployed in Atlanta are going to be pleased with the picking conditions. Clear blue skies. Policy-makers and the public who are not members of the relevant research community have had to form opinions about the reality of global climate change on the basis of often conflicting descriptions provided by the media regarding the level of scientific certainty attached to studies of climate. In this Essay, Oreskes analyzes the existing scientific literature to show that there is a robust consensus that anthropogenic global climate change is occurring. Thus, despite claims sometimes made by some groups that there is not good evidence that Earth’s climate is being affected by human activities, the scientific community is in overwhelming agreement that such evidence is clear and persuasive.

Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change

The first half of the Review focuses on the impacts and risks arising from uncontrolled climate change, and on the costs and opportunities associated with action to tackle it. A sound understanding of the economics of risk is critical here. The Review emphasises that economic models over timescales of centuries do not offer precise forecasts – but they are an important way to illustrate the scale of effects we might see. The Review finds that all countries will be affected by climate change, but it is the poorest countries that will suffer earliest and most.

… the Review calculates that the dangers of unabated climate change would be equivalent to at least 5% of GDP each year.

… the dangers could be equivalent to 20% of GDP or more.

…In contrast, the costs of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid the worst impacts of climate change can be limited to around 1% of global GDP each year.

…People would pay a little more for carbon-intensive goods, but our economies could continue to grow strongly.

….Emerging schemes that allow people to trade reductions in CO2 have demonstrated that there are many opportunities to cut emissions for less than $25 a tonne. In other words, reducing emissions will make us better off.

…According to one measure, the benefits over time of actions to shift the world onto a low-carbon path could be in the order of $2.5 trillion each year.

The shift to a low-carbon economy will also bring huge opportunities. Markets for low-carbon technologies will be worth at least $500bn, and perhaps much more, by 2050 if the world acts on the scale required. Tackling climate change is the pro-growth strategy; ignoring it will ultimately undermine economic growth.

The reality is that the Sun has been doing what it does for millions of years. The Earth has been cooling and warming far longer that humans have been here, so it is obvious that the Sun and Earth will keep doing their own thing regardless of what so-called experts want us to believe. Now if you really want to do something to help heal the damage that we have caused to the planet lets figure out how to clean up the huge garbage dump of plastic products that are floating in the Pacific ocean. That is a problem that we can see and fix, so lets start there.

Do you people even care about looking into the science of these issues before you print a hyped article like this?

What do the relevant scientists say?

No, the potentially low sunspot cycle is not leading to a new Little Ice Age. Here’s an actual scientific source, and this just a summary. Call an astronomer and ask, if you like to still call yourself a newspaper with reporters and all.

But even before that, the projection of a continued lowering of sunspots is not a consensus among scientists in the relevant astronomical fields. Here’s just a summary of the situation, with links for those more curious than to glance at ‘Most Popular’ stories on websites:

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/06/17/are-we-headed-for-a-new-ice-age/

If you *even read* speculation about a temperature “reduction”, it’s estimated to be a maximum of a 0.3 degrees Celsius lowering.

But THAT is subtracted from a still projected 2 – 4 degrees Celsius rise. So, siince 2 is a lot bigger than 0.3, that’s a projected net rise.

Maybe next time you’ll cite actual science instead of Fox News. Good lord. Pathetic.

Just thought you might like to know that it’s not true that “everybody” was warning of an ice age in the 70’s. By 1980 the predictions about ice ages had ceased, due to the overwhelming evidence contained in an increasing number of reports that warned of global warming. Unfortunately, the small number of predictions of an ice age appeared to be much more interesting than those of global warming, so it was those sensational ‘Ice Age’ stories in the press that so many people tend to remember. The fact is that around 1970 there were 6 times as many scientists predicting a warming rather than a cooling planet.
The actual figures are as follows: Out of 68 papers published between 195 and 1979 only 7 of them predicted cooling. 45 predicted warming and the rest were nuetral.

Lochness Munster

You might also like to know that it has been known as ‘Climate Change’ in scientific circles since at least 1988. This was the year that the IPCC was formed. As you must know the IPCC stand for the ‘Intergovernmental Panel on CLIMATE CHANGE.
The term Global Warming is the one that was largely used by the media not the scientists. Although, of course it is also fairly accurate. The simplest way to understand it is that Global Warming causes the Climate Change.
It’s also not widely known that it was in fact the Bush Administration who were the main instigators in the media switching from GW to CC as Bush thought that CC sounded less alarming than GW.
All this is a matter of record.

OOps! Sorry – that was meant to read ” Out of 68 papers published between 1965 and 1979 only 7 of them predicted cooling. 45 predicted warming and the rest were nuetral”
If anyone wants to check all the papers and their authors are listed here.
http://www.wmconnolley.org.uk/sci/iceage/

There were also articles in the press about global warming, for examplem on August 14, 1975, the New York Times ran, “Warming Trend Seen in Climate.” In this article, the New York Times discusses two scientific articles that focus on the overall climate patterns. It covers the debate over global cooling due to aerosols and global warming due to CO2 increases:

“…Dr. [Wally] Broecker’s argument is that the present cooling trend in the north will be reversed as more and more carbon dioxide is introduced into the atmosphere by the burning of fuels…”

There were many more but the “We’re all going to freeze” sensationlist nonsense sold more newspapers. Pretty much what todays nonsense is about too. The science says that even if we do enter a new Maunder Minimum it won’t make any noticable diference to the warming trend.

“…When I was taking geology in college back in 79 they were talking about the coming “Ice Age” back then…”
No ‘they’ weren’t, Not unless your college was of an extremely poor standard. Only 7 papers between 1965 and 1979 projected ‘global cooling’ whereas 45 projected global warming.

“The global warming fiasco, started by dubious scientists/professors eager for research grant money came next..”

Not even close. Beginning with work by Joseph Fourier in the 1820s, scientists have long understood that gases in the atmosphere might trap the heat received from the Sun
A scientist called Tyndall finaly figured out that this was true and found several gases in the atmosphere that could trap heat rays. In 1859.
Yep eighteen fifty nine.
His laboratory work identified water vapour and – yep – CO2 – among others.

Your college should have taught you (as my Scottish University did me) that a scientist name of Svante Arrhenius reported his formulae for calculating the effect of same in a peer-reviewed paper called
“On the Influence of Carbonic Acid [now called CO2] in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground”
Published in the Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science
Series 5, Volume 41, April 1896, pages 237-276.

Yep – eighteen ninety six.

Guess he started the whole ‘hoax’ just to get research grants eh?

You people continualy make utterly absurd claims which merely demonstrate your total ignorance of the subject that you nevertheless feel able to blithely pontificate upon. Not only is this an insult to true scientists who have spent a lifetime studying climae change but you do yourself and your political masters no favours by endlessly parroting such baseless nonsense.
I suggest that you begin by reading a basic history of climate science, begining with Fouier in 1820. You never know – you might even learn something.
