Day 6: Sony PlayStation Network down due to hackers

[Updated story: Sony admits hackers have stolen user info]

It’s been almost a full week and the PlayStation Network is still down.

The network, which has been down since Wednesday and allows 75 million users to play games with friends over the Internet, went down several times in February and March. The network is also used to deliver downloadable games and other static media. Sony’s Qriocity (pronounced “curiousity”) service, which provides streaming video, music and games, is also down.

Sony has not explained what happened exactly, but hackers are apparently behind the recent outage.

Take that hackers!

Take that hackers!

Late Friday, Sony said “An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network … .”

External intrusion = Attack by hackers.

When will online gaming resume? Late Monday, a Sony spokesman said “I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time.”

Protecting the network from hackers has been a lot more difficult than Sony first predicted. Thursday night, Sony said it might only take a full day or two.

Saturday, Sony said “we are working around the clock to bring [the network] online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.”

The hacking group Anonymous, which some had thought may be behind Sony’s problems, say it’s not them. On the group’s Facebook page someone wrote, “ATTENTION: For everyone coming here complaining about the PSN or inquiring about it, We Do Not Know What Happened. This is not the work of Anonymous.”

Sony’s problems are also unrelated to Amazon’s crash, which has crippled many popular websites and online services including Reddit, Foursquare, Quora and Hootsuite.

This is a big blow, especially through the long holiday weekend. Some games can only be played online, and many of the more popular games, such as the “Call of Duty” series, usually have hundreds of thousands of players logging into online firefights.

So, hang up your M16 there won’t be any “Call of Duty” deathmatches until Sony fixes this thing.

As someone says below, sometimes “you get what you don’t pay for.” Time to fire up the Xbox 360.

Seriously? You’re all whining about a FREE service? Is Sony not allowed to update their software? All the FREE games & updates they provide to you, not enough to keep you loyal when they go down for a few days to update? Are you kidding me?!
Go fire up your xBox’s – pay for their crappy network, and then you’ll actually waste your money when it goes down and their inferior system fries. Whining like a bunch of children is pathetic . . . oh no! You can’t play Call of Duty . . . whatever will you do!? Try finding a life outside of the internet.
If this is all it takes for Sony to “lose” you . . . then the rest of us are much better off without you.
I still love Sony, my two PS3’s, and I will never let an xBox in my house. xoxo

you are all a bunch of damn whiners. just a few days without ur video games and u flip out. i will never get an xbox because i dont think internet play should be something that u have to pay for. i already pay for internet, why should i have to pay to play my games online?
plus i doubt this network maintenance will last much longer so calm down and wait it out like everyone else.

PLAYSTATION NETWORK UPDATES!

Update: PSN is acknowledging on its EU blog that the network outage may be a result of “the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party.” Still no ETA for when services will be restored.

Update 2: PSN is now reporting that the network may be offline for “a full day or two.”

Update 3: As of midday on Friday (US Eastern Time), an issue that began on Wednesday night is still being worked. Thanks, Farres!

Who cares, it’s a tiny little problem and it happened to xbox before so don’t just think this is happening with PS3. In the end, we still aren’t paying for online so STFU.

I was wondering why I couldn’t sign-in to PSN. Not a huge honking deal for me because pretty much the only game I play on the PS3 (almost non-stop, lately) is MLB: The Show and I play it in single player mode.

It would bug me much more if it was Xbox Live and I couldn’t get my Rock Band 3 on. I hope that Sony gets PSN. back online soon because us gamers got to have our online gaming crack.

we are hoping it will be on in about hour and 30 minutes. if the anti hack ware uploads properly the it should be back on and working in no time and the lag should be pretty much gone.

Aww, you little xBox’ers will be back with Sony in no time. It’s pretty hard to be loyal to an xBox . . . kinda like being loyal to a snowball in the middle of summer . . . it doesn’t last.

psn itself is too advanced to be hacked, sony is one of the richest and technologically advanced companies out there and they are updating more anti-hack systems which makes them even better
