A “whites only” scholarship offered at Texas State University has yet to get any takers, according to a story in our sister paper, The Austin American-Statesman.
The Former Majority Association for Equality — a nonprofit group — is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students. The $500 can be used at universities other than Texas State, and, oddly enough, applicants only need to be “25 percent Caucasian.”
Student Colby Bohannan, a mass communication major and Iraq war veteran, is president of the group. He said, “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore.”
The article offers data to suggest he is right: according to U.S. census numbers, non-Hispanic whites now make up about 45 percent of Texas residents. Nationally, however, about 65 percent of U.S. residents are non-Hispanic whites.
I’m no math wizard, but, since men are usually always outnumbered by women by a percentage point or two, it would seem impossible for any “white male” demographic to be in the majority.
William Lake , the group’s treasurer, who, like Bohannan, has a history of bad check charges, said, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason — this is a touchy subject.”
“Touchy subject” is an understatement.

Touchy, perhaps, but fair is fair. If there can be scholarships for every other demographic, why not white males? And BTW, what’s the point of the “bad check charges” portion on the story? Does that make the scholarship worth any less to a student who might be able to use it? Or did you just want to be a jerk, George?

MB – Morehouse is not a blacks-only school. When I was a student at Spelman College, there were white students there and at Spelman. Also, I believe recently the SGA president at Morehouse was white. Sure it is an HBCU but it’s not like whites or other nationalities/races are not allowed to apply or are not accepted. But I do understand your point.

As previous posters said, HBCUs like Morehouse are not BLACK ONLY 2008 there was a White Valedictorian. They are just historically the ONLY schools that BLACKS could attend so they have been labeled as a HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. In my time at Morehouse I saw Whites, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Middle Easterns attend my school. I do not personally see anything wrong with this scholarship I mean if you are a fourth white you are eligible, so techincally it is not WHITES ONLY. Some of the comments here are pretty ignorant and show that America really has a LONG way to go.

I think this and every form of segregation and differentiation of the HUMAN race should be eliminated, unless one’s race is a factor in a medical diagnosis or research.
Get rid of the NAACP, BET, “Black” this or that, KKK, skin heads, sons of the confederacy–anything that perpetuates segregation. We are all the descendent’s of the first Homo Erectus that originated in Africa and now, as Homo Sapiens, the only reason our skin color and other characteristics are different is geographical adaption due to exploration.
This is all really kind of silly when you think about it, isn’t it?

Should be no issue. On a related note, just thinking about the Hope in Georgia. Would like to see the statistics of “not ready for College” recipients who fail to maintain the required GPA to recieve the Hope. That first year of scholarship is likely to be wasted on folks who are not performing. With all the attention on Hope falling short to fund, probably a good idea to make requirements for receiving it more stringent to better serve those who can perform. As my son entered college, the advising professors then told us 70% lose the Hope because of GPA issues. When budget is such an issue, prioritizing makes sense.

Its is “Historically Black” … meaning it was founded for Blacks when Blacks could not matriculate at any other schools. The lack of Whites at schools such as this — and Spelman, my Alma Mater, is due to lack of White applicants.)

Although there are HBCU’s; there are also non-African Americans attending them. Just because they say HBCU, doesn’t mean that only African Americans can attend. In regards to this scholarship, a lot of African American males can apply because of the 25% ruling they put on this scholarship. Slavery, and mixed marriages have already made this possible. The blacks? Dedicated month? TV Channel? The TV Channel is owned by Viacom by the way. For a people that have been taken from their native land and forced to be slaves in America, and sold as cattle, I think a lil month of history is not too much to ask. The blacks as you call them, know nothing but pain and hurt as their History is told. It’s sad and at the same time wonderful how this race of people have evolved. Black people have endured so much in the country I don’t think any race group can compare to the historical struggles and present day challenges of black people. White men run this country. White men have deep rooted wealth in some shape form or fashion. Not all but most white men. Who care’s if some whites want to give 500 bucks to white men who go to college, just don’t dare compare their intentions with the United Negro College Fund, HBCU’s, February or Television. African American’s have far more need of their schools and grants than any of you racists bigots can imagine!

C’mon, why does anyone have to bring up blacks. This scholarship is for white males. It didn’t say anything about blacks. I have nothing against anyone getting a scholarship nor any group who offers scholarships for the advancement of educational pursuits, as long as it is not for crimes against people or countries. Offering a scholarship to a deserving caucasian student should certainly not be an automatic ear to the wind to see if blacks get angry. Why would I get angry over something like that? Why should this be considered racist? It is not racist and to make a general assumption that black(s) would is stupid. By the way, “MB,” Morehouse College recently graduated a white valedictorian.

I think there is nothing wrong with this. “Minorities” have their scholarships so let them have theirs. It must suck to slowly being surrounded by people of color. Let them cling to their white superiority while it still means something. I think its sad though that poor white people are guilty by association with rich white people. Because the system is maintained & benefits white people with money . Its also sad that poor white people have been tricked that to think they are on equal footing with “wealthy” white people because if you are a white person with no wealth you just fall between the cracks in America. You are rich, and you aren’t a minority. Maybe if poor whites stopped voting against their interests & adopting lines of thinking that do not benefit them maybe they’d get some much needed assistance.
@MD
Morehouse is not a “blacks only” school. Its student population is majority black, but I assure you its not ALL black. Firstly, that has been ruled unconstitutional for some time. You cannot deny students to a college because of skin color. Anyway, Morehouse works the same was a “majority white” schools the minority groups get more money for school & are encouraged to go there. I bet no one told you that. @worm, quite a few white students apply for United Negro College Fund scholarhsips, and they get them. Very few people talk about how many whites and non-black students attend historically black colleges and universities. They get in because they are considered “minorities” in the student population. Further, with the country’s economic problems, more non-blacks are applying to HBCUs because they can get a quality education for less money (and often, with a better professor to student ratio) than other colleges and universities charge. It’s interesting- blacks have been discussing the relevance and need for HBCUs as they can now enter almost any school, but it will probably be non-blacks that push them to remain open.

If people don’t like that, then EVERYONE should dissolve any race-specific thing that there is, and then we’ll all be on equal footing (for once).

Why is it that comments can only be issued on this article and not the other ones? It seems like I’m only able to comment when the article has something to do with race. Is the AJC trying to encourage racial arguments?

*note the sarcasm*
Them damned blacks & Mexicans want everything from the white man. They want our country, money for their government assistance and now they want our VERY SOULS! How dare they want equal representation in the media. They have their own damned channels! How dare they NOT want to get exploited & be represented in the media in a positive light! Who told them they deserved their own History months too? It was the WHITE MAN who did anything worth mentioning in this world. What we show on TV bout them is true ya know ! They like to rape white women , hang on porches and commit c rime. How dare they WANT to get a education! Hell, I heard them blacks are lazy and have low IQs anyways ! And them Mexicans they can’t even speak English ! Sheesh! Don’t even get me started on them damned women …

I’m an African-American male and frankly I don’t have a problem with the scholarship due to the fact that evry other ethnic group has it’s own. I don’t see a prob with it AS LONG AS the receipient has to have the same standards (income ratio, GPA, community service) as any other scholarship receiver. Last, Historically Black Colleges were founded on the principle of educating African Americans at the turn of the 20th century due to the fact that we were not allowed into predominately white colleges throughout the United States. “MB” yes they are still classified as HBCU’s but welcome all races to attend the universities.

Predictable that white male is the only demographic that attracts this kind of media attention over a scholarship. Couldn’t help but notice that the article doesn’t mention how many scholarships are black only/hispanic only/female only etc. Probably just an oversight.

@ATLien,
Have YOU ever been enslaved? Have YOU ever not had the right to vote? I am going to bet NO to both. Our ancestors were enslaved, tormented, and treated like crap (Both Whites and Blacks…look it up, its called indentured servitude). Yes, until the 60’s, there was an unfair bias in this country and to this day there still is. But complaining about retributions from past crimes is BS. I would love to see a check from the gov’t for crimes committed against my ancestors but it’s not going to happen. I only got ahead in this world because I got off my butt and worked harder than everyone else. I think education should be equal to all of every race and gender and that by separating schools and scholarships into “this race only” or “this gender only” prevents this country from moving forward. If a scholarship is offered by the NAACP then they are the sponsor and can pick the recipient. If they consistently pick an African-American based on merit, that is fair to all. If they choose to not allow Caucasians, Latinos, Indians, Native Americans, etc to apply for the scholarship that is racist. The same goes for the Daughters of the Confederacy, ACLU, UFW, NHI, NRA, etc.

Yet I keep seeing comments like Bill’s:
” I like how a scholarship for Blacks, Hispanics or even Asians is not racist, but a white scholarship is. Double standards are fun. . ”
No one said it was racist. Maybe you feel that it is racist since you KNOW white male privilege is soooo hard! Ya really have the odds stacked against you. LOL But college isn’t cheap, and under privileged white guys deserve to get their education too

The sad thing about the article is the president of the group is a writer of bad checks and no one seems to notice. And yes HBCU’s have a long history of admitting non-black students. But why should people believe the facts when you can post your ignorance on a website.

Just for reference, there are also scholarships for:
1. Left-handed students
2. Overweight students
3. Tall people
4. Short people
5. Red heads
6. Asthmatics
7. Twins
Most of these scholarships give out more than $500, but don’t warrant discussion about heightism, hair-colorism or any other kind of preferential treatment.
A small scholarship given by a special interest group based on an arbitrary indicator that has nothing to do with merit shouldn’t be a jumping off point for a race-relations argument. You guys are better than that.

If you only have to be 25% white — that’s not a “whites only scholarship”. Most light skinned african-americans, creoles in louisiana, light skinned cubans, latinos, mexicans, most Indians in florida and oklahoma, and asians in california can apply for this scholarship.
There are no PURE white folks in America. Most of people in the U.S. have a mixture of EVERYTHING! White men made sure of that!

Um, where have yall been? Whites can get full rides to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Like any other federally funded schools, they are under a diversity mandate.
I know this is supposed to be SHOCKING! and all, but it’s a non-issue. Anyone can create a scholarship for anyone else, and contrary to what this poorly researched blog post says, there are existing scholarships for whites of various ethnic designations (Irish, Polish, Italian, German, etc.)
But since yall are clearly looking for a reaction, here you go…OMG! Call Al Sharpton! That’s racist!

Some of you really need to get out more or even read more. There’s nothing wrong with the scholarship although to correct some of your comments the United Negro Scholarship Fund has been awarded to those other than black including Whites. Also @ MB who mentioned about Morehouse, that school just two years ago had a white valedictorian. Whites have also attended Morris Brown, Clark, Spellman, and other HBCU (Historically Black College and University). You all also missed one big fact, the scholarship isn’t necessary, as you can see no one has yet to apply. Why do you ask? Because its not needed! And the comment about having a month and channel next do you ever watch CMT???? or do you remember in school that all 12 months cover you! Thanks and I’m done

Of course. That’s because…and I don’t want to offend, but it’s the truth…some white Americans are obsessed with black people. They obsess over what we’re thinking, talking about, upset about, happy about…they can’t stop themselves from commenting on any news story involving black people. They claim to dislike us and they claim to think we’re dysfunctional, yet they lie in wait, hoping to see us all worked up. It’s like they get a perverse thrill out of it. Not for nothing, but interracial porn is most popular down here in the South. Look at how they go off to college and throw parties just so that they can dress up like us (or their stereotypes of us).
So yes, they are sitting here hitting refresh, hoping we will get upset and post so that their pathetic lives will be complete.
I think many of them need mental help.
