A “whites only” scholarship offered at Texas State University has yet to get any takers, according to a story in our sister paper, The Austin American-Statesman.
The Former Majority Association for Equality — a nonprofit group — is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students. The $500 can be used at universities other than Texas State, and, oddly enough, applicants only need to be “25 percent Caucasian.”
Student Colby Bohannan, a mass communication major and Iraq war veteran, is president of the group. He said, “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore.”
The article offers data to suggest he is right: according to U.S. census numbers, non-Hispanic whites now make up about 45 percent of Texas residents. Nationally, however, about 65 percent of U.S. residents are non-Hispanic whites.
I’m no math wizard, but, since men are usually always outnumbered by women by a percentage point or two, it would seem impossible for any “white male” demographic to be in the majority.
William Lake , the group’s treasurer, who, like Bohannan, has a history of bad check charges, said, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason — this is a touchy subject.”
“Touchy subject” is an understatement.

RZM,
I see your point, but why explain. The HBCU’s have been explained. The channels have been expalined. Some people think BET just came out yesterday. That station has been on for over 30 years, when the only shows of African American based was the Cosby Show. If a person is ignorant and does not want to see anything then they won’t. I just get fed up with every time a story has to do with race it has to be a hate session.

“MB”. With your profound observations and inaccurate facts, I feel obligated to offer you correct information. Morehouse College is not a “blacks-only” institution. When you decide to educate yourself, you will see that there are many nationalities and ethnic groups represented. I guess this would also include the valedictorian at Morehouse College (2008), who is a white male.

MB needs to get a clue. Just because a college is Historically black doesn’t mean that whites are not admitted. As as matter of fact, at a number of HBCU (Historically Black College/University) white students have received scholarships to attend because they were the “minority.”

@confussedd
scholarships given on the basis of race are the only ways that some students are able to attend college I dont see anything wrong with giving a deserving student of any race a scholarship. In all honesty if an organizations wants to give their money to a certain race or group of people then they should be able to. If we arent allowed to give scholarships based on race, then why should we be allowed to give them based on any other aspect of a person?

MB, Morehouse isn’t a black only school. It was founded when whites wouldn’t allow blacks to attend the white colleges. White kids are welcome, but most don’t apply. There are believe it or not, white kids that attend (not many). @Whitey Jones, your dedicated month is every month and every tv channel…lol.There are no “black” shows on network tv..as a black male, I have no problem with a scholarship for white males. I know quite a few white males that need scholarships and/or deserve scholarships just like any other ethnic group. What’s the problem? When someone creates a scholarship, they can designate who receives it.

I think there is nothing wrong with this. “Minorities” have their scholarships so let them have theirs. It must suck to slowly being surrounded by people of color. Let them cling to their white superiority while it still means something. I think its sad though that poor white people are guilty by association with rich white people. Because the system is maintained & benefits white people with money . Its also sad that poor white people have been tricked that to think they are on equal footing with “wealthy” white people because if you are a white person with no wealth you just fall between the cracks in America. You are rich, and you aren’t a minority. Maybe if poor whites stopped voting against their interests & adopting lines of thinking that do not benefit them maybe they’d get some much needed assistance.
@MD
Morehouse is not a “blacks only” school. Its student population is majority black, but I assure you its not ALL black. Firstly, that has been ruled unconstitutional for some time. You cannot deny students to a college because of skin color. Anyway, Morehouse works the same was a “majority white” schools the minority groups get more money for school & are encouraged to go there. I bet no one told you that. Jeez, stop being so closed minded >_>
