‘Whites-only’ college scholarship offered

A “whites only” scholarship offered at Texas State University has yet to get any takers, according to a story in our sister paper, The Austin American-Statesman.

The Former Majority Association for Equality — a nonprofit group — is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students. The $500 can be used at universities other than Texas State, and, oddly enough, applicants only need to be “25 percent Caucasian.”

Student Colby Bohannan, a mass communication major and Iraq war veteran, is president of the group. He said, “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore.”

The article offers data to suggest he is right: according to U.S. census numbers, non-Hispanic whites now make up about 45 percent of Texas residents. Nationally, however, about 65 percent of U.S. residents are non-Hispanic whites.

I’m no math wizard, but, since men are usually always outnumbered by women by a percentage point or two, it would seem impossible for any “white male” demographic to be in the majority.

William Lake , the group’s treasurer, who, like Bohannan, has a history of bad check charges, said, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason — this is a touchy subject.”

“Touchy subject” is an understatement.

Larry:

Please tell Disney to put more than one African American on their station for my daughters to watch and relate to. Tell the Networks to add more color to their shows, and maybe I can watch them becasue I’ll be able to relate more.

And, the blacks on MTV and VH1 circus shows don’t count. They are a disgrace to the human race!

Wow. Great comments here … (except the one about “your” month and “your” channel. Every month is “your” month … including February. And every channel is “your” channel … including BET, considering it is owned by Viacom — the same company that owns MTV and VHI [all owned by Sumner Redstone]. ADDITIONALLY, the term is HBCU. Morehouse is not a “Black only” school and actually has many white males who matriculate. Its is “Historically Black” … meaning it was founded for Blacks when Blacks could not matriculate at any other schools. The lack of Whites at schools such as this — and Spelman, my Alma Mater, is due to lack of White applicants.)

Anywho. As an African American woman, the complete opposite demographic lol, Im not offended by this in the least. At the end of the day, they are completely right. There is a scholarship offered to every other demographic.

Plus, its just a book scholarship lol. Its not as though the school is saying they will only accept White males for the next application period.

The saying what’s good for the goose is good for the gander sure does apply… Every other group has their own, exclusive scholarship so no problem!

Awsome… now we need to push for equalization of “Hate Crimes”. If the rape/ brutal murder of the University of Tenn couple Channon Christenson/ Christopher Newsom by black thugs was not considered a “hate crime”… then WHAT IS!>??????

Although there are HBCU’s; there are also non-African Americans attending them. Just because they say HBCU, doesn’t mean that only African Americans can attend. In regards to this scholarship, a lot of African American males can apply because of the 25% ruling they put on this scholarship. Slavery, and mixed marriages have already made this possible. So, now let me see if my relatives can get this money, on second thought, we can do without it.

The comments I see on here really saddens me. I am a Marine that fights for your freedom and still its Caucasians bashing African Americans and African Americans bashing Caucasians. Who cares about what the specifices of the Scholarship are. If it helps a person to get an education and better themselves and this country, then that is the bottom line. If everyone stop pointing the finger at “Why it is?” and point it a “How can we help?” this country would be a better place. Most you really don’t have an idea on how people in other contries live. If you did you would shut the heck up.
