A “whites only” scholarship offered at Texas State University has yet to get any takers, according to a story in our sister paper, The Austin American-Statesman.
The Former Majority Association for Equality — a nonprofit group — is offering five $500 scholarships exclusively to white male students. The $500 can be used at universities other than Texas State, and, oddly enough, applicants only need to be “25 percent Caucasian.”
Student Colby Bohannan, a mass communication major and Iraq war veteran, is president of the group. He said, “I’m not sure white males are the majority anymore.”
The article offers data to suggest he is right: according to U.S. census numbers, non-Hispanic whites now make up about 45 percent of Texas residents. Nationally, however, about 65 percent of U.S. residents are non-Hispanic whites.
I’m no math wizard, but, since men are usually always outnumbered by women by a percentage point or two, it would seem impossible for any “white male” demographic to be in the majority.
William Lake , the group’s treasurer, who, like Bohannan, has a history of bad check charges, said, “There’s a scholarship out there for just about any demographic, except this one. We realize it’s for good reason — this is a touchy subject.”
“Touchy subject” is an understatement.

Predictable that white male is the only demographic that attracts this kind of media attention over a scholarship. Couldn’t help but notice that the article doesn’t mention how many scholarships are black only/hispanic only/female only etc. Probably just an oversight.

@ATLien,
Have YOU ever been enslaved? Have YOU ever not had the right to vote? I am going to bet NO to both. Our ancestors were enslaved, tormented, and treated like crap (Both Whites and Blacks…look it up, its called indentured servitude). Yes, until the 60’s, there was an unfair bias in this country and to this day there still is. But complaining about retributions from past crimes is BS. I would love to see a check from the gov’t for crimes committed against my ancestors but it’s not going to happen. I only got ahead in this world because I got off my butt and worked harder than everyone else. I think education should be equal to all of every race and gender and that by separating schools and scholarships into “this race only” or “this gender only” prevents this country from moving forward. If a scholarship is offered by the NAACP then they are the sponsor and can pick the recipient. If they consistently pick an African-American based on merit, that is fair to all. If they choose to not allow Caucasians, Latinos, Indians, Native Americans, etc to apply for the scholarship that is racist. The same goes for the Daughters of the Confederacy, ACLU, UFW, NHI, NRA, etc.

Side note …. NOT one black person has spoke out against this scholarship on these comments.
Yet I keep seeing comments like Bill’s:
” I like how a scholarship for Blacks, Hispanics or even Asians is not racist, but a white scholarship is. Double standards are fun. . ”
No one said it was racist. Maybe you feel that it is racist since you KNOW white male privilege is soooo hard! Ya really have the odds stacked against you. LOL But college isn’t cheap, and under privileged white guys deserve to get their education too

The sad thing about the article is the president of the group is a writer of bad checks and no one seems to notice. And yes HBCU’s have a long history of admitting non-black students. But why should people believe the facts when you can post your ignorance on a website.

Just for reference, there are also scholarships for:
1. Left-handed students
2. Overweight students
3. Tall people
4. Short people
5. Red heads
6. Asthmatics
7. Twins
Most of these scholarships give out more than $500, but don’t warrant discussion about heightism, hair-colorism or any other kind of preferential treatment.
A small scholarship given by a special interest group based on an arbitrary indicator that has nothing to do with merit shouldn’t be a jumping off point for a race-relations argument. You guys are better than that.

Texas is a very racist backwoods state. I’m not the least bit shocked!
