Are your kids crazy about ‘What does the Fox say?’

Last week my 6-year-old came home singing some crazy song about a fox. She would laugh and could barely get the words out to the song – hooting and clucking. They watched the video in her first-grade classroom and the whole class thinks it’s hysterical. My husband and the other kids knew exactly what she was talking about. I had no idea.

We headed off to New Mexico for fall break with all three kids in the back of the minivan giggling over this fox. Even my 60-something-year-old Godparents who met us in Santa Fe knew about the fox. My uncle pulled out his phone over dinner and brought up the viral video for me on You Tube.

The song, “The Fox (What does the Fox say?),” is from Norwegian brothers Bård and Vegard Ylvisåker known as Ylvis. They are a musical comedy duo and said they were shocked by the song’s success, which is now at No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

UPI reports:

“It was released to get some attention in Norway. Beyond that we hadn’t even thought about it, it’s really crazy,” they told Billboard last month. “

It seems my 6-year-old and 60-something uncle aren’t the only ones into the fox song. Jimmy Fallon donned a fox suit and sang and danced with the group on Wednesday night’s show. I saved the performance and showed it to Lilina the next morning. She loved it. She thought it was so funny and was really excited to see another version of it. She thinks it’s the best song ever.

Here’s the Fallon version. Don’t miss Jimmy in his fox suit.

So my question is do you know about the fox song? Do your kids know? Are they totally into it? Do they sing it and you are clueless? Did you know about it before Fallon had the group on?

Isn’t it about time to once again rehash the great annual debate about whether trick or treat hours should be set before or after dark?

Or, how a debate why there are no meat scented candles.

Today’s blog is rather lame.

I can see why it is viral. The beat is fabu. Likely a good hit for the dance clubs. The song is silly enoughfor kids to like it too. My cousin just posted the song last night, but no I had not heard it yet. Her sister who teaches MS had not heard it either. I am.thinking it is only.a matter of time.

Uh, a big no to all the questions posted above by TWG. Just another stupid Internet meme fad that will be forgotten in a month or two.

Yes, I knew about it. You should search YouTube for the Ohio State marching band performing that song. They do a great job with it.

My boys, 11 and 15, already consider the fox old news. My daughter, who is in college, finds it mildly amusing. I, on the other hand, saw it for the first time a few days ago and think it is hysterical.

So which is the hysterical part? I may have missed it, or my humor is far from yours.

TWG show your kids the You Tube video of the Orchestra Flash Mob:

They did a great job and while it is not funny it is worth watching.

I see why small kids like it. Its silly. All children like to make up funny sounds and this plays right into that. Also, the fact that he looks so serious like he’s singing about love or something but then you realize he’s just singing about animal sounds. That just makes you want to smile…just a little anyway.

my toddler loves the song.

why is everyone so quick to act all “i’m over it” about EVERYTHING?!?! get over yourselves. the song is silly..meant to NOT be taken seriously and meant to just be fun. liking it doesn’t make you a dork, and not liking it because your taste in music is so much more refined than everyone doesn’t make you the cool kid on the blog.

IT’S FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! freaking let yourselves go a little!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greg, that was OU, not the OSUMB. You must be from M*ch*gan. They are the only ones who can’t seem to get that right.

I am all about silly and goofy stuff with kids. When I was in Phoenix, my daughter went with me and to some of of my shows. She told me I was way too silly. Well, that is what little kids like. It is not my taste but hey, if everyone loves it and it is popular, good for them… 6 weeks of fame could put them over the top ! Some people are great at being creative but others do have to buy into it and it looks like this is happening.

Folks, the fox video is good clean silly fun. If you don’t get it or like I feel a little sad for you. It cheered me up when I was feeling blue. It’s also a spot on parody of overly sincere modern pop (not to mention Gangnam Style.) The brothers Ylvis create their own music and they’re very talented. They have another video which is actually much better than the Fox and even funnier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GxkBDJajg4

Until the day after the Fallon appearance, when my Facebook subscription to Late Night popped up with the song, I hadn’t heard it. Now I cannot get enough. I’m 52 with no kids, but I love the song and have watched both the Late Night video and official video numerous times and shared it with others. It may end up being a one-hit wonder for Ylvis, but they are definitely some good eye candy and I’ll never get the refrain, “what does the Fox say?” out of my head!

My 8 year LOVES this song. It’s a fad and will pass, but it’s silly and fun. Much better this than singing about boys, heartbreak, partying, or Molly.

@LizBeth — where did you find the t-shirt???

I can’t believe some of the crazy comments about this song. If kids of all ages, and adults like this song, I think it’s wonderful. How refreshing after listening to most of the garbage people call music today. Sorry, I’m showing my age. My 3 year-old grandson introduced us to ‘What does the fox say’, and I love it
