What’s appropriate punishment for man convicted of whipping toddler?

A Cobb County man is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday for repeatedly whipping a toddler over potty training. He was convicted of first-degree child cruelty on Wednesday and could get up to 20 years. Here’s the story

From the AJC:

Andrew Charles Pride, 31, is set to be sentenced Thursday and could be put behind bars for up to 20 years for whipping a 22-month old boy on his genitals, causing bleeding and welts. Pride’s relationship to the child was not disclosed.

“This wasn’t an accident,” Assistant District Attorney Chuck Boring said. “This was malicious, and it was all because of potty training. Mr. Pride struck a 22-month-old baby in the groin multiple times because he wouldn’t pee in the potty. This man’s actions are the definition of malice.”

Evidence presented at trial this week showed the whipping took place in August 2012 at an Austell residence.

Although Pride was convicted of one count of cruelty to children in the first degree, the jury deadlocked on a second charge. That charge stemmed from claims that Pride had enticed an older child to claim responsibility for the toddler’s beating.

Superior Court Judge Rob Leonard will sentence Pride sentencing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

So what do you think is an appropriate punishment for this man? How much jail time should he serve? Is anyone else thinking he should be whipped like he did the child? (I’m sure that’s not legal, but …)

He should get the whole 20 years. Whipping children is barbaric enough but hitting a toddler in the genitals with a belt is an exceptional level of depravity. I’m okay with someone hitting him in the genitals with a belt also as long as it is “several times”

He should never see the light of day, period. And ladies, please protect your children. They are gifts from God and if you don’t want them, then just don’t breed!

Whipping is “barbaric”? We certainly differ in that regard. In this case, however, he should receive the whole 20 years as this goes far beyond “whipping” – this is abuse and the penalty should be the maximum allowed.
@Grandma – what, exactly, does “…ladies, please protect your children.”? Are you implying that all men are child abusers and women are the only valid protectors? Are you stating that “ladies” are beyond abusing children? I’m just not certain I fully understand the meaning behind your statement.

20 years is too good for him. String him up by the same area that he hurt on this poor little boy and let him rot.

20 years and being hit with a belt several times would be fine.

SO sad! I once went to school with welts on my back side and legs, when I was in school. Several friends asked me about them as we changed clothes for PE. Teachers did not inquire back then though. Causing a toddler to bleed is pathetic and I agree that he should have the same punishment…perhaps when he cannot use the toilet on command.

Ok again, we don’t know the whole story and we are quick to pass judgment. Remember, the media only let’s us know what THEY think is important. I don’t trust the media at all!

However, if anyone laid a hand on one of my babies like this story, there would be no jail time for him. I would be the one going to jail! No one messes with my kids, or any of my family or friends kids either. That momma bear in me will come out real quick!

This is not a question of disciplining a child, but of sex abuse. Hitting a boy on the genitals is not ever an appropriate pubnishment or discipline, it is a brutal sexual attack. And the attacker is hidden behind such excuses as “He deserved it” or “He wouldn’t cooperate” or “He wouldn’t learn his lesson.”

He should be punished like all short eye sex perverts are punished.

@mayhem- I frankly don’t need to know anymore details from the media-this was a 22 month old child-whatever excuse this piece of garbage gives will NEVER EVER justify what he’s done. As a mother of 2 boys (now adults) I can’t begin to imagine what I’d do to him. Fortunately inmates do not tolerate those who harm children, he’ll get what’s coming to him there.

It’s never the full story but certainly this man would not have been convicted if he hadn’t done it. I doubt this was his first time abusing the child either. He deserves to be punished but we don’t live in an “eye for an eye” society so 20 years will be fine. Honestly though, I have begun to rethink the amount of time people spend in prisons and what the effects are. Do we really think after 20 years of hanging out with other criminals, this guy is going to walk out of prison as a productive member of society? Likely not. He’ll have no money, no references, no where to live unless he has family willing to take him in, no way to get a job and will become a further strain on society. I am certainly not saying that he doesn’t deserve punishment because he certainly does, I just wonder if 20 years in prison is the appropriate punishment.

Do we really need to spend the money locking this moron up for 20 years? Just whip his ass and get it over with…

For me, it’s not that he whipped the kid … it’s that he whipped him in the genitals. That’s what’s “barbaric”, as someone said above.

Actually I’d go so far as to say that’s abuse and assault and he deserves whatever the justice department gives him, plus a little more.

Potty training is the most frustrating experience I have had as a parent thus far. It is an exercise in patience and my 3yo is still not trained. That being said, I cannot imagine using a belt to punish a child over potty training. This man is 31, not 16 and should have the maturity to deal with potty training stress. I agree with the others who have said this is not likely the first time he has abused a child and if given the opportunity, he would likely do it again. He needs to be locked up as long as possible!

If the mother was not involved in this, she should be allowed to take him outside and whip his genetals, then he should go to jail after she’s done with him! @Mayham, you are right about that momma bear instinct. Don’t mess with my kids!!

A similar whipping each day until the kid is an adult. Then let the young man decide when the whippings should stop. Leave Pride out of jail, so that he can spend his own money on food and shelter and not burden the taxpayers further.

I agree to the full sentence. And while it would be instructive to him to be treated the same way this boy was treated, I am sure he will suffer in jail. Perhaps, before he is released, the grown up boy could give him a little treatment.

Who else is being charged on this? Who left him with this monster?

Let’s see:

22 months is too young to expect successful potty training, especially for boys. The toddler had no chance.

Whipping a child for failure to potty train at 22 months is abuse. Any normal child would probably not be successful at this age, so the abuser is just using the potty as an excuse to beat the child. Out of four of my kids, two trained right at age 2 (24 months), and the other two took(or are taking) until almost age three (36 months).

Whipping the child in the genitals is sexual abuse.

As fpr punishment, I am not sure about 20 years. I suspect few months in a federal cell with Bubba and a couple of Bubba’s buddies would fix this guy for life. Should we spend a million dollars to lock this guy up? Wouldn’t 7 years served, castration, a geolocater for life (at the perp’s expense), and a court order preventing contact with children be good enough?

July 11th, 2013
10:34 am

I have a 21 month old boy and this story makes me want to cry. A child that age is really too young to potty-train. To beat the boy in the genitals is beyond cruel. How awful…. I think he should serve at least 10 years!

July 11th, 2013
11:37 am

Well he gets 5 years. And is anyone else confused by the fact that no one knows the relationship between this man and the child. Surely a wee-bit of investigation on a reporter’s part could have found that out (but that seems to be a common problem with the AJC reporters).

I am willing to bet my entire paycheck this guy was Momma’s boyfriend. And I’ll even go as far as to say she left her baby with this monster, so she could go to her 2nd job, to support this lazy POS!!

Techmom, it may have been withheld to protect the identity of the victim. If knowing the relationship would identify him, I’d rather the reporter not dig further and publish the info.

I’m sure Grandma will correct me if I’m wrong, but what I think she meant is that almost every time you hear of something like this, it’s usually the mother’s boyfriend. I don’t think she meant to imply that men and only men are guilty of abusing children. I remember hearing that the most dangerous thing to kids, worse than trampolines, auto accidents, etc, is Mom’s boyfriend.

Also (I guess I’m playing interpreter today), I think what Southpaw meant was that the adult should be whipped every day until the child grows up and that his victim will ultimately decide when the whippings stop. Took me a few reads to get that one.

That being said, I agree with Techmom about prison. EVERYONE wants to see this man punished for his crime but what happens when he gets out? Finds another women with small children to mooch off?

Why would the man’s relationship to the child not be disclosed? I’m not sure it has a bearing in what the punishment should be but why keep that information secret?

July 11th, 2013

Where did I lose you? Let me try rephrasing a few things, and maybe my comment will make more sense. I presume you know what “similar” is, and what a “whipping” is. “the kid” is the unidentified toddler TWG mentioned. In slightly over 16 years, he’ll be an adult, hence my mention of “young man” later on. As an adult, he can legally make decisions. That’s why I suggest letting him decide whether to stop or continue Pride’s punishment. Since he might very well not even remember the incident, Pride has pretty good odds of the punishment stopping.

Now does my comment make more sense? Or was it the rationale for “Leave Pride out of jail” that didn’t make sense to you? Or would it be more accurate for you to say “bad idea” instead of “no sense?”

Ladies, listen to “grandma.” and PROTECT your children!
That means, you don’t bring some man into your house to be alone with your kids no matter how much you THINK you know him. Y’all been watching too many of these Tyler Perry wonderland movies where single ladies find the most PERFECT, totally handsome man who loves them and everybody! Hayell NO! it ain’t like that in the real world.
Watch over your children and let no man be alone with them until you know every psychological detail about the slackabelly.

“Honestly though, I have begun to rethink the amount of time people spend in prisons and what the effects are. Do we really think after 20 years of hanging out with other criminals, this guy is going to walk out of prison as a productive member of society? Likely not.”

Techmom ~ I have been thinking a lot about that lately…as far as the effects of prison on offenders. However, the thing about sex offenders (and what he did constitutes, in my opinion, sexual abuse) is that the rehabilitation percentage is dang near 0. No matter the amount of time he does, it won’t change his mental behavior or urges. Apparently from statistics, it’s even worse when they are offenders of children.

This was not just “child abuse” as far as discipline. He whipped a two year old boy on his genitals….there is a sexual sadistic role to that.

LOne of each, he isn’t going IN to prison a useful fella, anyway. How about let him repay the criminal justice system for his incarceration, also, so he will remember it all of his life.

And, what,about this child’s MOTHER!?

Treating sex offenders is extremely difficult, and successful rehabilitation is elusive. Locking him up for 20 years and then releasing him with no skills, no money, and no place to go is simply a recipe for recidivism.

Having said that, serving some time is certainly appropriate. Five years is about right, with a long probabation and non-contact with children after he is released.

Let’s be reasonable hear. You lock somebody up for a very long time and you create a bigger problem on the back end. Prison doesn’t “correct” anybody. It makes it nearly impossible not to reoffend upon release. No job, no housing, no money. What would you do under those circumstaces?

If we follow Federal guild lines, the guy will be evaluated by a Court appointed Mental Health Doc, represented by a Court appointed lawyer and the child will be found to have provoked the whole thing

I happen to know a lot about this case.

In my perfect world we would tattoo “child abuser” on the man so that each and every woman who comes in contact with him will know that he should never be alone with children. In this case he got 5 yrs (just read that this morning) and 15 yrs probation and he can not be unsupervised with children. Who is going to enforce that? The next woman will have no idea and she will leave her child with him. I really don’t think we need to pay for this man to be in prison for 20 yrs. I just wish we could keep him away from children. FOREVER.

I can’t go into the details of the case but I will say this.

Very, Very often moms leave their children with men who are not the child’s father, have no experience with children, have no bond with the child and are basically lazy POS’s. Mom are working to support everyone and the only thing the guy is good for is Mom saving money on childcare. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Very often these mom’s will cover for the man when he hurts the child. Very often, even though she’s working she will have low self esteem and not want to lose her man.

BUT, occasionally you get a KICK ASS momma who finds out somebody hurt her baby. She has not one moment of denial. She threatens the man with all kids of bodily harm. She calls the police and makes sure he his arrested and he never comes near her or her children again. This is her baby and she is sick with guilt that she ever trusted this man. She vows she will never leave her babies with anyone but family again.

I love those cases.

That should have said “kinds” of bodily harm.
