Minions beat Lone Ranger: Which did you see?

“Despicable Me 2” left “The Lone Ranger” in the dust this holiday weekend thanks in large part to the adorable mischievous yellow minions. “The Lone Ranger” didn’t get great reviews but neither did “Despicable Me 2” (Entertainment Weekly gave both Cs.)

From Entertainment Weekly:

“The $76 million animated film from Universal and Illumination Entertainment crushed the competition in its first five days in theaters, earning a jaw-dropping $142 million — $82.5 million of which came in during the traditional Friday-to-Sunday frame. In fact, Despicable Me 2, which features the voice work of Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig, led the box office to the best July 4th weekend of all time. Over the Friday-to-Sunday period, the Top 12 movies grossed $220.7 million, which marks the 10th-strongest weekend in box office history.

“Despicable Me 2‘s $82.5 million start just barely beat Monsters University‘s $82.4 million debut (though that film opened on a Friday, not a Wednesday), and its $142.5 million start stands as the best ever five-day opening for an animated film ahead of Shrek 2‘s $128.9 million haul in May 2004. Like that film, Despicable Me 2 earned an “A” CinemaScore grade from audiences. Universal reports that crowds were 60-percent female and 55-percent below the age of 25 — the studio adds that 27 percent of viewers were Hispanic.

“We knew it was going to be hugely successful,” admits Nikki Rocco, Universal’s president of distribution, who says family business was “phenomenal” and made up “the bulk of business” She also points to the film’s prime summer release date and the fact that families were together for the July 4th holiday as contributing factors….

1. Despicable Me 2 – $82.5 million
2. The Lone Ranger – $48.9 million
3. The Heat – $25 million
4. Monsters University – $19.6 million
5. World War Z – $18.2 million”

Although we definitely plan to see “Despicable Me 2,” we were playing catch up and saw “Monsters University” this weekend. I’m not sure now whether we will see “The Long Ranger” after the bad reviews. I would love to hear what you guys thought. Is it worth our money? Would my 12 and 10-year-old enjoy it? Would my 6-year-old be afraid?

Did you take in a movie this weekend? Which one? How would you rate the new “Despicable Me?”

No movies over the long 4th of July weekend. We spent the entire time up at a friend’s house on Lake Lanier, with our friend “Family”…friends I have known since I was a teenager. We had a blast. Bad weather, but we still had a good time.

I hope everyone had a safe weekend! We are off to the beach next week!!!

No movies for us either even with the rainy weekend.

Has anyone seen White House Down? Totally not a family movie of course but I saw the preview and thought it looked good and warranted a big screen.

Neither.

Good luck Mayhem, at the beach. We ( my sister and I) went to Pensacola Beach over the 4th and it rained most of the time. The red flags were out and you could not go in the ocean. The front desk told us they had people calling from Orange Beach AL and there were so many jelly fish there that they could not go in the water either. I had free nights but it was still disappointing!

I was at Clearwater Beach, the week before for work, and it was rainy too but we did get a chance to go in the water. We have certainly had a wet summer!

Neither. Talked to friends who tried to go to the movies but said the lines were as backed up as I-75 after an accident during a rainy rush hour. At a couple of theaters out here, there were traffic jams just trying to get into the parking lots – which were full anyway.

Neither here too. Spent the holiday weekend in Florida with my son, daughter-in-law & my adorable 9 month old grandson. Best. Weekend. Ever..

@Bhorsoft – I assume you’re talking about the horrendous accident on 75 North in Henry County. Very sad situation.

People should boycott The Lone Ranger. The films director Gore Verbinski said that Tonto is masked because of “white guilt” whatever that means. What a crock of yack squeeze…

Mywent into purgatory I guess. Not sure why

None of the above. I did see Monster U with my younger child on June 20th.

Wolverine will be out on July 26th and I will see that.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is out on Aug 7, and despite school starting that day we will go see it. Yes on that day. School needs to start in September.

@ MJG I think my backyard is becoming a tropical rain forest. :)

40 inches of rain...

..so far this year in ATL, where the norm is 25 inches by this time (and the last few years have not been that much) – that will turn a back yard and the summer into problem areas…

Lone Ranger is no-so-serious on the character development, which is what hurts it. You just never develop the urge to care for the good guys or really hate the bad guys. Tonto does have the expected Depp quirkiness though. There are some deeper concepts about killing of Indians, and the expected Western style shoot-em-up moments. If your kid can handle the concept of watching lots of people get slaughtered in a not gory way, then sure. If that kinda thing upsets them, then pass.

With all the rain, my friends up at the lake have had to pull their dock in numerous times. Yesterday, as we were cleaning up, and getting ready to head out, the water was coming up on to their grass. There is no beach……

Other places we usually go to float, same thing, no beach……I love that the lake is full, and we don’t have to worry about another drought.

I still feel like I’m on the dock, rocking and rolling…….I haven’t gotten my “land legs” yet…LOL.

FCM — Rose can’t wait to see the Percy Jackson one — And I agree should start in Sept. Already getting way too close — summer is too short!!

My parents were visiting a friend of ours in prison on July 4 and got stuck in i75 traffic coming home — they diverted to surface streets to get around it.

Is the regular beach at Lake Lanier covered too? We were considering the beach and water park when we visit??

We haven’t seen either yet. We’re heading up north to see family late in the week. We’re staying with my parents, and my in-laws only want the oldest to come spend the night one day (not his younger sibling), so I’ll take the younger one that day, I think. Trying to work around the inevitable hurt feelings.

Mayhem, we live on a lake (Jackson) and the water is high but no problems with it rising too much. I think GA Power has a pretty good grip on it. The swaying use to get to me like you say but I guess I’ve just gotten use to it now. It’s worse when a boat flys by to close to our dock and you have to really brace yourself not to fall off. I like to lay out and read a book a lot on our pontoon boat and that can get to swaying real quick but you get use to it with time. I do still have that rocking feeling after we take the boat out for an entire day though. Takes me a few hours to feel like I’m on solid ground again.

And that was suppose to be too close to our dock. I do know the correct spelling :)

I have not seen either movie. No plans to do so. That being said, why would you take a 6 y/o to see Lone Ranger? The rating is PG-13 so that makes it an automatic “no” in my book. When in doubt I read parent & kid reviews on http://www.commonsensemedia.org

TWG – Yes there is still a “beach” at the Beach & Water Park, but not as much as there was in years past. The lake was at 1073 feet when we came over the dam yesterday.

We went to two movies over the holiday. Was in PCB in the rain. I still went to the beach everyday though. White House Down was so implausible but great fun popcorn movie. We also saw World War Z.

We avoided kids movies at all costs. The worst day for rain was the 4th. DM2 was sold out for six screenings in a row. No wonder it made so much money.

I am excited to see the next PJ movie coming out in August. We will see that one as a family.

My husband and I enjoyed “White House Down”. It’s about as plausible as Tom Clancy’s “Debt of Honor” . . . oh, wait . . .
