I turn 41 next week and for my birthday I have asked for dance classes with my husband.
I have wanted to take dance classes with my husband since 1996 when we lived in New York City during the beginning of the swing craze. Swing dancing was everywhere and we couldn’t do it. They held swing dances outside of Lincoln Center in the summers. We were going out to “speakeasies” where they were swing dancing. Everywhere we turned couples were twirling and jiving. Sadly, we never took classes.
So when I saw an offer for half-price lessons on one of those social deal websites, I snapped it up. It’s 10 weeks of dance lessons for two for less than $100. You can’t beat that.
The teacher is an older woman and seems very Norma Desmond. We took our first class last night. There is no touching your partner in your first class. You just learn to feel the music. She had some basic side steps and arm positioning and then you just learned how to shorten or lengthen your steps based on the beat and speed of the music. It was fun just seeing what you could do with some very basic moves.
Michael is being a very good sport about it. He didn’t complain at all and really did try. He says needs to stop following the old lady and just feel the music.
I am excited to learn how to dance but I am also excited about 10 weeks of dates with my husband. I am excited to get out of the house on a school night and play hooky. No feeding the kids dinner. No giving baths. No reading books. We get to go off and have fun together. I was very giggly on the drive home and kept smiling after the class so I think it’s good for us.
Would your husband take dance lessons with you? What other kind of lessons would you like to do together? Would you like to play hooky on a school night?
