What I’ve been working on: 2 birthdays and a wheelchair

My birthday hubby and baby girl. How could she possibly be 6? Michael loves ice cream cakes but they don't have Bruster's here so I had to try Baskin-Robbins. It was very good. I got Lilina one too even though she had her party last Saturday.

Hey guys I am getting up a new blog topic in just a few minutes but I wanted to show you guys what I’ve been working on this week. Walsh got his cast on Monday (see Facebook for that shot — it is a giant cast) and then I made phone calls for three days to get the right wheelchair for him. The cast is super heavy and hurts when he walks on crutches. He needed a wheelchair with an elevated platform to support the leg. He was too big (almost 10) for the pediatric wheelchair but the adult one is too heavy so we needed a lightweight wheelchair. So that took a bunch of phone calls back and forth with insurance, doctor’s office and two medical supply places to get the right prescription that they would process. But it finally arrived last night. (I want to post a photo of him in the wheelchair but he doesn’t want me to so I won’t.)

I also worked on setting up a bed for him downstairs in the dining room since he can’t climb any stairs. I had to buy a new twin bed frame because he has bunk beds that I could not easily unbunk. And then have wood planks cut to support the matress. Well they were cut to the wrong size so our lovely neighbor re-cut them for me to the right size.

We also learned how to take a shower with a cast. I put a metal chair in the shower and wrapped the leg in a giant garbage bag. I Duct taped it around the thigh and then he used a hand-held shower spray that he could aim away from his leg.

On top of that we had two birthdays this week. You may recall that Michael and Lilina share a birthday so I was trying to get presents, cake and a special meal for their birthdays yesterday.

So sorry no new topic yesterday, and I will get one up soon for today.

Sorry you’ve had such chaos the last couple of days. I hope things show down this weekend.

chaos is a exactly the feeling — should slow down — the college and our kids have spring break this next week so we will get to just hang out and regroup!!

Look and see how wonderful it is for the members of the LUCKY GENE POOL CLUB! they can go and see a physician, whenever they need too and get all of the necessary care treatment and best medical equipment, even adult size if it the pediatric size is too small.

Meanwhile The many Thousands of Children across the State of Georgia cannot get the appropriate medical care for a basic cold. Because Momomy and Daddy nether has individual health insurance, nor family coverage. Our President is willing to provide those services, However our mean olde GOVERNOR who could care less about the CHILDREN says FLATLY, “NO”. Our Governor says, No Way will allow the coverage even if the Federal Government approves the financing and payment of said services.

So let me get back to this fantasy world of the Haves and fawn of this crisis of OH My what shall I Do today, being that I have everything imaginable. Yayyyy, Ice Cream and Birthday cake!

who cares about the poor kids…Let them CAKE TOO!

Glad you found a wheelchair that will work. And I have used the garbage bag on more than one occasion. Hope that leg heals quickly.

Berrie, you are nothing more than a partisan fraud. Get off your knees and wipe your chin. Maybe you can explain to the rest of the GA tax payers your plan for funding the annual 450M shortfall they will be expected to cover caused by the Medicaid expansion you chastise the Gov. for not accepting. How about a 10 dollar per swipe EBT surcharge?

Yes, Bernie, Theresa and her family are abundantly blessed and I’m sure she recognizes that. I’ve never gotten the impression that she thinks that she deserves her blessings more than anyone else so why begrudge her the fact that she has INSURANCE and the ability to take care of her family? Her lacking does not serve to make the situation of other poor people any better so why attack her? Makes no sense. And yes I am a mostly-liberal that believes all children should be covered by insurance, period, and if it costs me more in taxes, I’d gladly pay it to have healthy children in this country.

Has Walsh gone back to school yet? I had a cast on my foot in 4th grade and thought the attention was fun until it came time for PE and recess and I had to sit out :( And yes, I remember the garbage bag and tape for showers. No fun!

MY, my, my…….Bernie sounds like he/she needs a nap!! I can relate to the busy week. I have been sick all week and finally went to the doctor on Wednesday to be told “you have a virus”. So, I get my OTC meds and start to head home to go to bed and I get a call on my cell from my granddaughter’s daycare. I have to pick her up (running a temp of 103) and take her to the doctor and pick up meds for her and pick up my daughter and finally get to go home and lie down for a couple of hours before getting up to cook dinner, do dishes, etc…….welcome to my life! (Sorry Bernie – we have insurance too! It’s because I have a J-O-B.)

@Bernie, lay off Theresa. She is fortunate to have insurance and I’m sure she knows it. Any of us with insurance consider ourselves lucky. Too bad we live in a country where you have to be “lucky” to have health insurance.

Same story that I went through. Injury, cast, wrapped up in a thick garbage bag. But, I used medical tape so that it wouldn’t hurt being taken off. I also just used a little step stool to sit on while using the shower head. I don’t think the metal vs. plastic is a big difference.

Walsh did stand up for himself – don’t take my picture – and Theresa listened. But I doubt she’ll get “blog credit” for that.

Awesome pic TWG. I have a similar picture, sitting on my dad’s lap some 50 years ago celebrating a birthday as a very young girl. That picture Is now worn, torn, faded. But the value is priceless.

Bernie… A common cold should not be treated by a doctor. Overuse of medical resources burdens the system. If people were more judicious in their usage, perhaps medical care would be more affordable. Sometimes you just have to use a little common sense.

Aren’t we grumpy? @ 2:28 pm – I am so happy that you have a J-O-B and Insurance, Right NOW! come tomorrow you may have neither! and then you will be quite thankful for my comments supporting those who do not have Health Insurance. Surely, YouYou are not so financially secure as you imply here! You and your family like most American Families are not too much more than 2-3 paychecks from being one of the many HOMELESS of America.

So as smug as you are…I wouldcount my Blessing a little more carefully! Maybe I will See you, your husband & the kids coming to a highway exit near you..saying will work for healthcare, Food & Shelter!

I will be one of the ones who will stop and provide assistance unlike your many selfish and non-caring comrades here! They only think of themselve so Proudly and arrogantly!

MomsRule @ 10:11 am – Do You have compassion for the millions of uninsured and underinsured Children of Georgia? do you have ANY feelings FOR or About THEM? Do you care that they do not Get the meddical care and treeatment they need, while so many of US DO?

Stop thinking of yourself ALL the time! Look around You, there are thousands near you NOW who are not as fortunate and blessed as the little ones above. I have no hatred in my heart for them, Jealousy or envy. Just like the less fortunate they did not CHOOSE their Parents!

Its just knowing the many who are without makes this entire article so TRIVIAL and insignificant in the Larger scheme of things. Think of what it would be like to see the smiles on those kids without to
have a smile as Theresa’s kid above. Now wouldn’t that be WONDERFUL for ALL?

Hello Theresa,

I have been searching local blogs and came across yours. I’m sorry I couldn’t find any contact info for you. Anyways, I am writing in regards to your blogs. Would you ever be interested in receiving a free cleaning in exchange for you blogging about my company? After you post blog, I will also offer a special to one of your followers! Let me know if you would ever be interested in something like this. Thank you so much, have a great night!

Sara,

She doesn’t live in GA anymore. Right now, I think she’s in Arizona. I think her contact info is in the upper right hand corner- there is a link that will give you more info about her.

I’m reading this mornings comments with my jaw dropping . . . guys — WTF?! Stop feeding the Bernie troll, they are just trying to stir up trouble. My troll detector is pretty limited, but even I can smell this one from several miles away. And Sara — if you aren’t bright enough to go to the top of the blog and click on the “About Theresa Walsh Giarrusso” link and get her email, or you can’t be bothered to read the last few blogs and realize that T. lives in Arizona now, then I wouldn’t want you anywhere NEAR my house.

What is it, a full moon? The crazies are out!

To the point: T, sounds like you’ve had your hands full! Glad you’ve got spring break to regroup.

I don’t think TWG needs to be blogging about a SPECIFIC cleaning service. Is she going to compare and contrast Sara with other places?

The debate on to outsource (or not) the cleaning of the home has been debated here several times.

Bernie is a bit too harsh, but you what Warrior Woman – some people are employed, and very educated (more than you I would bet ), but cannot get insurance. I own my own company. I have been turned down by every insurance carrier due to existing conditions. I have 2 Master’s degrees and am fluent in 3 languages BESIDES English. I pay cash for all expenses I incur, and having just finished my taxes for 2012, I can tell you I spent over $18k on health-related issues. last year. You really need to become a little more educated at the types of people who have been turned down. I can tell you that my workload, and volunteer efforts make me busier in a week than you probably are in a month. I suspect your insurance is through your husband, correct? for any of you whose insurance is paid by their spouse, and your job (if you have one outside the home) does not offer this perk. think about what would happen if your spouse lost their work and benefits. My neighbor, who has 4 kids, paid over $2500 a month for the 6 months that her husband was out of work.

Missnadine, I’m like you, uninsured but not due to a pre existing condition. Rather it’s simply because I can’t afford $1,400 a mth for my spouse and I. If someone would only regulate the charges that Docs and pharmacys charge us, these rates would become affordable for most. Insurance costs are dragging the middle class down these days. So sad but true.

Tina – sorry to hear of your health issues. It is very frustrating when people on this blog, and essentially everywhere, try to tell us that our inability to get insurance is OUR fault, and that everything would be great if we just worked harder, right?
