It seems like more and more online stores want you register and sign in just to see their wares. It’s such an odd business model that I guess is supposed to simulate exclusivity but it just annoys me!
I know why the online stores want your info but I think it’s pretty gutsy to assume they can still draw the volume they need for to stay afloat and get everyone’s vital information.
I gave in a while back on One Kings Lane and signed in. I get emails from them every day now. I do like perusing the housewares and vintage table cloths and such, but I don’t want emails coming from every site I just want to click through.
Some sites that want me to sign in –
Josh and Main
Gilt.com – I gave in a few days ago on this one and signed in and so far only one email.
Online stores should give you a couple of chances to look around before making you register. The New York Times and other news publications with firewalls handle it that way. At least you would know if it’s worth your time to register.
I am ready to switch emails and leave my old one as my shopping email to give out but it’s such a pain to notify real people that you’ve migrated to a new account.
Are you willing to register and give up your info for the privilege of just looking at their online wares? Does it annoy you? Do you have just a junk email account for that purpose? What are your favorite shopping sites that you have to register for? Which sites are worth giving up my email to peruse?
