The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had to announce their pregnancy a little bit early because Kate had to be hospitalized for extreme morning sickness.
From Good Morning America via Yahoo News: (Here is a link to today’s story.)
“Hyperemesis gravidarum, the reason newly pregnant Kate Middleton is in the hospital, is a rare but acute morning sickness that results in weight loss and accounts for about 2 percent of all morning sickness, doctors say. “
“The condition is sometimes associated with women having twins, experts said. “
“Women diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum have lost 5 percent of their pre-pregnancy weight, or 10 pounds, said Dr. Ashley Roman, a professor and OB/GYN at New York University Langone Medical Center. “
I posted several stories about the pregnancy and her morning sickness on the AJC Momania Facebook page, and one woman wrote on our FB page yesterday that Kate should “suck it up.”
While I do think a lot of moms do suck it up, but in this case according to the definition Kate has probably lost 5 percent of her body weight and is risking dehydration.
I was sick with all three pregnancies but my first was definitely the worst. Or at least it seemed the worst. I think with No. 2 and No. 3 you just know you’re going to feel awful and try to plan accordingly. Also I was home with each subsequent pregnancy where with No. 1 I was going to an office every day.
I do remember with No. 1 being at a work focus group. The bosses had very sweetly brought in food. However, the smell of it was making me feel so sick and all I ate was bread. My boss said later she knew that night I was pregnant even though I hadn’t told yet. She was a couple of weeks ahead of me and was finally feeling better where as I was still in the horrible stage.
Obviously because of Kate feeling so sick they had to announce earlier than they would have liked. Did you have to announce early because of bad morning sickness? Did you ever have to be hospitalized? Did you ever get dehydrated or lose too much weight? (I think my sis law lost weight at first. I never lost weight.) Should Kate suck it up or do you think it’s more severe than most of us have ever experienced?

I was lucky — I wasn’t sick, except once, just a little — not enough enough to count as “morning sickness.” However, my SIL had a massive case with her third child — she was in the hospital with fluid replacement for two days, and on bed rest (as if she could have gotten up!) and nausea medicine for weeks, and I remember coming to take a turn staying with her for a few days to watch the smaller kids and keep pouring liquids in her. She would just lay there, limp, pale with sweaty hair, alternating moaning and throwing up. And she is NOT a sickly, fragile, thing — which really took everyone aback. If the duchess is feeling anything like my SIL felt, then bless her heart, I hope it doesn’t last very long.

My first second and third pregnancies were a nightmare of vomiting constantly. I actually was throwing up on the delivery room table. My Doctor said “You poor thing. I am so sorry for you”
Anyone who hasn’t gone through this will never understand. My heart and sympathy go out to Miss Kate. Don’t think for one minute that she is being coddled in any way. I too, was hospitalized for weeks, because my family feared for my life.
Have some compassion, people.

I had hyperemesis gravidarum with my first child. I lost 20 pounds within the first two months. I gained back 10 during my pregnancy.

Anyone else have weird smell problems? There was one grocery store in town that I could not go into, due to its smell. Then my kitchen had an odd smell and I avoided it in the house we lived in then.
With numbers 2 and 3 it was the smell of fish. Seemed like the lunchroom served it every day! I would start supper and then go lay down. It lasted about 4 months, then I felt great! I never threw up, just felt like it was about to happen. I was very lucky.

I totally feel her. I was sick for my whole 9 months in and out of the hospital. It’s was terrible I couldn’t eat drink anything not even sallow my own saliva. My beginning weight was 140 at the end of my pregnancy I weighed 105. I hope she gets better.

I love this conversation because it creates an opportunity for us to share experiences as mothers – and hopefully provide comfort and empathy for each other. I have always thought (I have three children) that pregnant mothers need to have more information about what happens during pregnancy so that they feel “normal” when all the crazy ailments pop up! catlady my daughter is now 18 and to this day if I’m in a building and catch a whiff of the air freshener that I used at the time I was pregnant with her I’m immediately nauseated. I had to take shallow breaths because breathing made me throw up. No talking, walking, or moving in general for months because I threw up. I was drinking ginger ale because to have something to throw up because the acid had damaged my esophagus. She is completely healthy and has rarely gone to the doctor for sickness her entire life.

I’m pregnant now with my first and I can smell everything. I was a vegetarian before my pregnancy, but was strangely craving meat last week; however, I’m six weeks now and the thought of meat repulses me so much that I cannot even feed my cats their wet food. The sight and smell makes me gag uncontrollably. My scented candles are making me sick. My favorite perfume is making me sick. I have to wash dishes immediately because the sight makes me sick.
I feel for poor Kate. I’m not even hurling (yet- knock on wood), just constantly gagging, and it’s enough to make me miserable. I work full time and attend graduate school. I am praying for the second trimester to come quickly and hopefully bring some relief, because between the nausea and fatigue, all I want to do is lay in a sterile hospital room with no smells. I had my first ultrasound on Monday and that’s all I could think: I wish I could stay in this sterile room for the next nine months. Everything makes me uncomfortable, aggravates me, and makes me feel sick.

Several healthy pregnancies and not a moment of MS!
