A new study from Michigan State University suggests that university students that use Twitter as part of their education feel more connected to why they are learning and do better in class.
“Christina Greenhow, an assistant professor of education at Michigan State University, discovered that students using the microblogging service as part of their education are more engaged and have higher grades. In fact, she considers it “a new literary practice,” as she explains in her study “Twitteracy: Tweeting as a New form of Literary Practice.”
“Greenhow taught a class that required each student to have a Twitter account that was used in different ways throughout the semester. She noticed students were more engaged than in the twitter-less past. “
The video also reports that a 2010 study from a Pennsylvania school agreed that Twitter helped raise grades.
I teach Twitter as part of my digital media class but I think it’s much harder for people to get than Facebook. (Twitter has a much lower usage rate than Facebook, but it is growing.) Other teachers in the program suggest letting shy kids Tweet questions to you during class, which I think could work for a large lecture class. But I only have 20 students generally and I can usually tell if they aren’t getting something.
I could see how Twitter could help them feel more connected to their classmates and help them share information easily.
Are your college students using Twitter? If so, how?

Yep, the Lockheed deal...

…is a win/win for the Obuma admin – they will not announce the layoffs until AFTER the election, which is ANOTHER of his ways of just shrugging off current law – plus, if he wins, he will probably use taxpayer money to fund the fines Lockheed receives, just as he promised – if he loses, it will look it is Romney’s fault, so, as I said, it is a win/win for Obuma, and a lose/lose for the taxpayer and Lockheed employees…
And, Walmart is the hands down leader in cost, especially when they take your word that a competitor has a cheaper price that they will match without proof…

So, the topic ostensibly is whether tweeting improves scholastic outcomes, but many folks are commenting about food prices at various stores and some of those are scolding people who raise political questions for being off topic?

@lexi…that sums it up. Those of us who have been around for a while chime in OFF topic sometimes. I try to respect the topic and if it is one that is moving along quickly let my random thoughts go, for another day. This topic had a split of about half on topic and half off. Not sure, but if TWG gets paid per post…this could be helpful?

Mother Jane Goose, the 1950s welcomes you. Why is it year after year people are annoyed with you? Why is it that so many people speak out against you? I suggest it is not the people who speak against you, but rather your comments and beliefs which expose you as the annoying, opinionated woman that you are. You are simply not liked on this blog.

Size 12 = Huge. Time to loose weight. Not good for sales calls. There are people out there like me in business that if I see a size 12 I think what else in their life is out of whack in addition to their weight. I think if this woman let herself go, what else has she let go in her life, and business. You need to loose weight but do not have the discipline to do it. While you have opinionated thoughts about others, yourself and institutions many of your clients do about you because of your weight and your inexpensive attire. Loose weight and invest in an expensive suit, not the bargain shopping you wear before a client. Buy shoes that start at $250, they will get noticed rather than the bargain shoes you wear which are also noticed. Dress better for your career, please.

@Mommy…funny ( to me) when you make comments about someone you do not know. Everyone in my meeting yesterday was wearing jeans except me. Just sayin…

I do know you. It does not matter what the client is wearing; when you are on sales calls you are representing your company – you are the face to face representation of your organization. Invest in a suit and gat it taylored- it will cost you $800 but it’s worth it compared to your current inexpensive wardrobe which shows. Invest in expensive shoes with style and a classic heel – something you dont have. Invest in an upscale salon – something I have never seen you do. Most importantly, drop 40 pounds for previously mentioned comments.

@Mommy Dearest: Since when did this become the “Pick MJG Apart” blog? MJG has been a successful consultant for years. Personally, I think her clientele would be put off by $800 suits and $300 shoes — they are teachers who are often budgeting so they get a pair of shoes on sale at DSW, and might start wondering whether they can actually afford her fees. And I’m quite certain the kindergartners could care less what label is in her shoes. Hello — she’s in costume much of the time!! Your unsolicited comments are mean-spirited and rude. You can stick your nose up in the air over a size 12 if you like, but the average size of an American woman is size 14. Someone’s weight wouldn’t bother me — unless I was hiring a taste-tester in a candy factory. I simply cannot understand someone deliberately setting out to be a bitch to someone who has done nothing to them except be an active member of this blog.

HAHA! If you knew me, then you would know that I am NEVER on a sales call to represent my “company”. I do not have an organization…JUST me. In my line of work, you dress for the expectations of the client who hires you. If I came in wearing a tailored suit with a heel, they would know that I do not work with children. THAT is what I am being hired for.Since I am contracted a year out, I am pretty confident that my wardrobe does not deter my clients. When is the last time you have seen a Kinder teacher in a $800 suit? You may need to take a field trip to Kindergarten.

DB, you are her friend so your response is dully noted. You do not understand sales and the importance of looking 100 percent in front of clients. Ask General Electric, Boeing or IBM if they do not think a rep should look their absolute best representing the company – Dow Components, key stones of the best corporations ever produced in America. You argument is muted by fact on how great sales reps and businesses conduct themselves. I have seen MJG at work and she wears cheap outfits, bad shoes, inexpensive hair color and is overweight. Although you might become defensive towards your friend the reality of capitalism is corporations do not put up with poor appearance while representing they have earned via quality for decades. Hopefully I have suggested good, positive items she can take away to improve her consulting practice. She should loose weight and temper hew smug comments on this blog for so many like me have tired of this woman for years and no longer wish to take her comments without rebuke.

Performance rules of the private sector will be entering more into your local, underperforming BOA. mJG is a nice Republican who has disdain for those who are down and out receiving food stamps yet she benefits financially by motoring up to the through of publicly funded education. She is early 50’s… Her days of continued employment are numbered.

@mommy dearest, while you continue to admonish one on here for not presenting in a professional manner (bordering on trolling, stalking), keep in mind, “loose and lose” are two different words. Look them up. If you are referring to “tailoring” as in clothing, it would not be spelled “tayloring.” Also, FYI, your comments and conduct would be considered reprehensible in the business world. You gave youself up when you said you are a business person. Any SUCCESSFUL business person would agree, YOU are the no-hire.

Mother Jane Goose is an opinionated, right wing prude who is fat, overweight and dresses poorly earning a liviving off the government. She proclaims conservative values while earning a living off the government. Phony. And she is overweight and pompous.

@Mommy Dearest: Sounds like you have a few opinions of your own, too. BTW, what in the heck is “motoring up to the through”? Could you have POSSIBLY meant “bellying up to the trough”? IMO, personal attacks are not useful to this blog. The more you rant, the more mean-spirited you appear.
Ah, dammit, I got caught feeding the trolls again! I hate it when that happens. Go away, little troll, shoo.

@ Mommy D…..lose weight? I work for a very well respected Atlanta based company. Several of our recent hires have been overweight. What is your thing that everyone need to look like Barbie, Ms Thang? You have serious issues that need professional help, the psychiatric kind.

Don’t bother with the negative comments. Just remember, Misery LOVES company, and some people actually enjoy bringing others down. It just makes them feel that much better about themselves.
You can’t bring me down….I don’t let nasty comments by miserable people on a newspaper blog get to me.

Lockheed told US (I work there) weeks ago that we would NOT be getting WARN notices this year. Didn’t say why but I did breathe a little easier. I doubt seriously that it is to spare President Obama because of all the other conversations (most were hoping to get the notices to get people to vote the President OUT and then not lay anyone off) and our CEO’s speeches to Congress. WARN notices are required 60-90 days prior to a layoff but do not mean all employees that receive the notice will layoff.

Why would anyone of college age need educating in the area of Twitter? They would know that already, right?
Leave MJG alone!

…faithful to the end – “I doubt seriously that it is to spare President Obama because of all the other conversations” – that is exactly WHY they are being held up until AFTER the election – you need ot do more reading on exactly what is happening with Obuma – kind of like he still maintains he knew nothing about Bhengazi, even now that we all KNOW that he new within 2 hours and while the embassy was under attack, he still maintains he did not know…think about it…
