Calif. high school athletes accused of drafting girls into fantasy league for alleged sexual activity

This story that makes me feel sad for the young men and young women. Here’s the full AP story. See what you think.

From The AP via The Washington Post:

SAN FRANCISCO — School administrators and parents are wrestling with how to respond to news that some male high school athletes created a statistics-based fantasy league that awarded points when girls the boys “drafted” were rumored to have engaged in sexual activity.

Parents at Piedmont High School were notified of the league’s existence in a letter and email Friday.

Varsity athletes used the online competition, modeled after fantasy leagues common in major league sports, as a bonding activity for the last five or six years, Principal Rich Kitchens said in the letter.

“Male students earn points for documented engagement in sexual activities with female students,” he wrote.

Most of the female students who were drafted into the league weren’t aware of the competition, he added.

Officials at the San Francisco Bay area suburban school learned about the game during an assembly on date rape earlier this month. Administrators interviewed students, parents and staff members, but weren’t able to identify any participants in the competition, which students referred to as a “Fantasy Slut League,” Kitchens said.

Neither Kitchens nor Piedmont Unified School District Superintendent Constance Hubbard immediately responded to calls seeking details about how the league worked and whether administrators plan to continue trying to pinpoint who was involved.

“The revelation that students expressed concern that the fallout could result in discipline and affect their college applications suggests an understanding by students that there is something wrong” with the league, Kitchens said in his email to parents.

Kitchen also told parents that the teacher who organized the date rape assembly would collect personal stories from students with an eye toward developing another school-wide meeting on the “personal integrity” issues the league’s disclosure raised.

The high school also plans to hold classroom discussions and pre-season meetings with student athletes to “address issues of sportsmanship, conduct, and integrity.”

“While off-campus activities are not subject to school discipline, because it involves our students, it involves us,” the principal said. “At this point, because we do not have specifics about participants or victims, our focus is on education and understanding moving forward, not discipline for past activities.”

Piedmont is an affluent area of Oakland prized for its public schools and high levels of parent involvement. Dana Copeland, president of the high school’s parent club, said she was surprised to learn of the league’s existence, but appreciated the principal’s effort to keep parents informed

Is this worse than boys just talking about alleged sexual conquests? What do you with this as parents? As teachers? How do you discipline or explain why this is wrong?

That was supposed to pop up at midnight last night — don’t know why that didn’t work — sorry there wasn’t something new up this morning!! Yikes!

Things like this have essentially always existed at any level of society where there are hormones running rampant – so primarily in middle school and high school. Notice there is no outcry from college fraternities or sororities for engaging in this same behavior, but I guess that’s because once people hit 18 it’s deemed OK. All this is was mimicking popular fictitious sports competitions as a new twist to a “game” that has always existed with teenagers, both sexes.
Find me a high school boy who “hits that” and doesn’t brag a little. Or find a high school girl who “nailed the quarterback” and didn’t smugly scrape a notch out of her bedpost.
Sex is a part of life. Quit getting all shocked when it happens. Teach your children how to take precautions and stop assuming they aren’t “doing it”.

So someone came forward about the league but they don’t know who?

It’s a new twist on the old “bet you five bucks she will/did … you’re on” conversation but essentially there’s really nothing new about this.

Excuse me, but why is the school involved in this at all? Is the school acting in loco parentis?

Don’t get me wrong — it’s pretty damn sleazy — but it sounds like it’s being done by kids on their own time, outside of school. Why is the school involved at all? If one student date-raped another student, would you call the principal — or the police? I’m sure there’s something in the honor code about it, but unless it’s found to be illegal, how is it any different than probably every other Facebook posting that high schoolers put up?

And you, as a parent, discipline YOUR child the same way you would if you caught them in any other activity having to do with something that you found morally reprehensible.

What “protection” works 100% of the time? If it fails, what then? We may have sex drives, but that doesn’t mean society ought to put its imprimatur on sex by immature individuals who are not prepared to bear the full consequences. Shifting those consequences onto society is not a proper solution, and the long term consequences, financial, moral and otherwise, of us shrugging are beyond the capacity to bear much longer, forget forever.

This reminds me of the Conyers/Rockdale County...

…deal several years ago whereby a female student mentioned to one of her teachers that she and her friends, both male and female, were practicing “sexual activity” and were getting “pretty good” at it.

When it all is said and done, the male students will probably be charged with “rape” while the consenting girls will be off scott free…such a double standard in these instances…

Why is this evewn considered news? Kids have been doing this since the begining of time, and the fact they came up with a novel way to describe it is not news. Also how strange that in the bastion of liberalism -the SF bay area-anyone there would even question it-the same area that promotes gays, lesbians, transgender and any other bizarre behavior is shocked at the normal behavior of teens. Go figure

There was supposedly this “game” a few guys at my JOB were playing with females they were “dating”. (I had to put it in quotes because some of them are married and going on dates was not really the point.) The clock would start when you picked the girl up. You had to do whatever but MUST sleep with her and “clock out” (leave or get her to leave). The faster the time between clock in and clock out “wins”. Sleazy b@stards

This is not much different than the tool the wimp Zuckerberg created that became Facebook. He hacked into Harvard’s student database and created a site where male students could rate female students.

Ok, got it, it’s fine to go ahead and bash people over something based on rumors.

lexi, what rules or laws were broken? Some guys bet each other on who could sleep with who. There is nothing illegal about that.

@Susan B. Anthony. Why are you here? I, for one, am getting tired of your constant sneering at TWG. You think you could do better, go get your own blog. Oh, wait — no, you don’t HAVE anything to say, you just want to throw out snooty little sneers.

Ok, unless the girls were forced to do the sexual acts this is nothing more than boys being creeps! No different from keeping notebooks or lists like they did before computers. The school should not be involved. And unless the girl was in a relationship with the boy, maybe she shouldn’t be giving away those acts so easily.

Agreed Jennifer, let’s put some responsibility on the girls. The boys couldn’t play this little game if the girls were not ready and willing to give it away.

@Raisin Toast – I called it a rumor because I don’t know ALL the players in the “game”. But yes, I do know that at least 2 MARRIED people were involved. It may have just been the two of them playing with each other. And yes they are sleazy.

Also Raisin Toast – the people I consider sleazy are sleazy for other reasons besides cheating on their wives and playing games with women. They are also unethical in business. It’s not often people can be sleazy in one area in life and super ethical in every other, at least not in my experience.

This is stupid, and goes both ways with boys and girls. For you as a mom or just a woman to say the guys are sleazy is a naive statement. Guys have been saying stuff like “I bet ill hook up with her” since before I was born and vice versa I’ve heard girls say “I am going to hook up with him, he is so hot”. I’m a college student and although we don’t make games of it, how could you ruin a kids professional life over something that happens all the time in society. Step out of you bubble, boys will be boys and girls will be girls, get over it . I think it was creative and hilarious, if the girls weren’t willingly giving it up then there would be an issue, but don’t blame a guy for an act that takes 2 bodies.

Mike – you are correct. The women are sleazy as well for messing with the married men. I just think it is sleazy to plan another person – man or woman – to hit and run. You are right in the men and women, alike, do it. Again, I have a bias against these two men for things other than this game so this does make me think even worse than I did before.
