Do you work out with hubby? Michelle Obama does

First Lady Michelle Obama often beats her husband to the gym in the morning but they usually spend part of their work out together. She writes on iVillage, where she is guest editor, that she and the President watch ESPN SportsCenter during their workouts and catch up.

From AP:

“”Barack and I work out every day,” the first lady told the site in an interview to appear online this week. “I usually get to the gym before he does. But he is usually there either in the middle of my workout or right at the end. And we’re watching ‘SportsCenter’ and we’re catching up. That’s why I know so much about sports … and you start having an opinion about (New York Jets quarterbacks Tim) Tebow and Mark Sanchez.””

“If she’s on the road, Mrs. Obama often brings a jump rope, she adds. “If I don’t have a rope or space, I might do a 30-minute routine that includes a minute of jumping jacks alternating with a minute of push-ups, then some sit-ups. You take a 30-second break and do it again.”

(The article also reveals their food weaknesses!)

Michael and I rarely go to the gym at the same time. I usually go in the mornings after dropping the kids off at school and he goes at night after work. But when we are there together we rarely talk and rarely do the same type of exercise. (I’m sure the White House gym is smaller than my local Y making it easier for the Obamas to chat.)

Michael uses a lot of free weights and I use the machines. Also I like the elliptical and swimming and he never does either. He uses basketball for his cardio. He won’t ever attend classes with me. I tried to get him to go this crazy weights/burst class where you so stations of exercise. It was led by a man but Michael still thought it was girly.

There is one couple that Michael sees at the gym at night. They’ve both lost a ton of weight and Michael thinks it’s because they are doing it together, encouraging each other and making it harder to skip going.

Do you work out with hubby? Does it help keep you both motivated? Do you use the same equipment? Will he go to classes with you?

ummm, NO!
In fact, a couple weeks ago I read something about what to do if your husband doesn’t like the same classes at the gym as you. This may come as a surprise, but we are not joined at the hip. If I prefer a particular workout and my husband prefers a different one, we each do what we like. Simple enough.

We’ve tried a few times but differing schedules and interests meant we never worked out together. He did best when he had a personal trainer at his office’s gym. I go through times when I go to the gym but for the most part I would rather exercise outside (I think I have strong need for Vitamin D!) I usually get up and walk about 3 miles every morning with a friend.

We do cycle together a couple of days a week but we cycle with a big group and quite frankly, other than the car ride to/from the cycle shop, we don’t talk to each other much on the rides.

I do think it’s much more motivational and easier to stick with a routine if you have someone, anyone, to do it with you.

To me, doing workouts alone that I enjoy is more motivating than working out with my husband doing something I like less. The group instructors at my gym are great for motivation.

@mp – By anyone, I meant anyone other than your spouse whether it’s a friend, a trainer or in a class.

@techmom:
I didn’t mean to challenge your comment, I was referring more to the original comment. My brain works faster than my fingers!

I agree that having someone to be accountable to helps a great deal with motivation.

Honestly don’t care what the Obama’s do in their personal lives. Her husband does pleanty to make my blood pressure rise as President. I get pleanty of exercise helping to campaign against his re-election.

My husband and I work out together at night, about 3-4 times a week, after the kids go to bed…..

@FCM…right there with you.

The hubs and I have never worked out together and I am not sure I would want to. He is far more competitive than I am, so I think working out with him would stress me out ;o)! He wants to join a tennis team together and I cannot think of anything I would rather do less. I love him, but I would rather play with out kids outside or watch sports together than exercise together!

The Obama’s need to spend less time running on the tread mill and more time running the country and stop killing the jobs and giving in to the liberals.

No, we don’t work out together. He’s incredibly competitive, and I’m not competitive in that way — it frustrates both of us, so we have learned “to each his own” in this area!

I go to the gym, but so far I haven’t been able to get my husband to go with me since I joined over a month ago. They’re building a new location of the same gym down the road from where we live though, so I’m hopeful for after they open ;)

Yep! Hubby and I do Body Pump together in our basement. He has a barbell & set of weights and I have my own. It’s great couple time for us…I love it. :) Also, on occasion we run together. I’d say that we workout together about 3-4 times/month. We both workout regularly (5-6x/week); but, we primarily workout solo due to our schedules.

Anyone here see Obama 2016? I am thinking about it, even though I rarely go to the movies.

When referring to both of them in a non-possessive way, please use Obamas not Obama’s. As someone who teaches, it would be great to get it right. Others are following the same wording in their posts, or else they don’t know any better.

It is well known that daily exercise is good for you. Think of it this way (both Dems and Reps), do you want Obama to have a heart attack due to lack of exercise or too much stress so Joe Biden is in charge? Aaaahhhh!

@Kat
Thank you!
Obama’s = possessive. Obama’s workout routine.
Obamas = plural. The Obamas work out together.

See how easy it is!

I do think it’s a great thing that any couple finds time to do something together they both enjoy, whether that be working out, playing cards, watching foreign movies, or discussing politics. But I think the in-depth reporting of our government’s officials is both intrusive and repulsive. I remember Clinton being asked about his underwear preference. (Why?! Totally did NOT want to know.) Unless something that would effect the country is involved with their personal proclivities, leave it to rest.

While we are at it…the Obamas are from Illinois…not Illi…noise….

It amuses me to hear pronounciations. I once made the mistake of saying;
New ORleans to those who replied N’awlins. I was quickly corrected.

Night all!
