Henson Company breaks off relationship with Chick-Fil-A over gay marriage stance

The Jim Henson Company has announced via it’s Facebook page that it no longer wishes to partner with Chick-Fil-A because Henson’s company supports gay marriage.

The Huffington Post:

“… on Friday, the Jim Henson Company posted the following statement to their Facebook page:”

“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD. (http://www.glaad.org/)”

“With this, The Jim Henson Company joins the ranks of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who has vowed to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city, office star Ed Helms who tweeted that the chain had “lost a loyal fan,” and the countless individuals who have taken to social media to voice disapproval, including those planning a National Same Sex Kiss Day on August 3, in condemning the Chick-Fil-A’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage. “

A fan site reports that Chick-Fil-A kids meals were featuring a Jim Henson Creature Shop make-your-own puppet toy from mid July to Aug. 18th.

How do you feel about  Chick-Fil-A’s stance on gay marriage? Does it influence your decision to buy your food there either way? If you are offended, it is hard to give it up? (That is some yummy chicken.) Do you think the owners should stop talking about their views?

(I know this is a polarizing issue but please try to stay polite and discuss it like adults. No name calling please.)

I applaud both Chick-Fil-A and The Jim Henson Company for voicing their beliefs publicly. While I personally side with Chick-Fil-A, I don’t see any reason to equate Kermit The Frog with Hitler. While I personally think marriage should be between a man and a woman, I feel the government shouldn’t make such a call. However, if marriage is allowed between gays, would they have the same right to adopt as other couples? If so, I then have a problem because then their union would affect someone else’s rights (the innocent child). Should a child be forced to accept that sort of choice? This is where the slope gets slippery….but regarding Chick-Fil-A and The Muppets….gimme a sandwich and Kermit! That’s was easy….but it gets trickier from here…

The Muppets are no longer owned by the Jim Henson family …. Jim Henson died years ago. These opinions are those of the C.E.O. of the company who is in no way related to Jim Henson. Jim Henson did not interject opinions on sex in his programming. He loved children.

I’ve always been a big fan of Chick-Fil-A. They make great food. I’m sure that Dan Cathy is standing up for what he believes is true. Good for him. As a Born Again Christian I am sure he believes in the sanctity of marriage. So hopefully he could get behind the causes of ending divorce and adultery as well. Certainly they do more for the ruination of marriage than any laws redefining marriage between more than between a man and a woman. Let’s see if he’ll come out about those HUGE affronts to marriage as well. Perhaps we should even think about banning divorce (it is the leading cause of the dissolution of marriage) and then criminalize adultery. Those two acts alone would move the United States to a sanctity of Marriage that we haven’t seen since the 1950’s. What say you Dan ? All I hear are the crickets chirping……and the sound of me driving by the next Chick-Fil-A.

He didn’t say that he “hated” LBGT. He said that he believed in traditional marriage between a man and woman. and of course all of the mindless folks translate that to mean “hate”. Sad to see but expected when someone’s values don’t align with the LBGT group….but he didn’t say he hated them.

I have tuned up the world’s tiniest violin to play some soothing melodies for those who can’t read and those who are against everyone whose opinion, beliefs are different than theirs. “Can you hear me now?”

Yes a spouse that is female is called a wife. Are you too stupid to even understand that? If Sarah Palin can get a word in the dictionary, I’m sure we can change the definition of marriage to: a union between two ADULTS. Do I agree with Chick-Fil-A, No. But they have a right to voice their opinion which I believe is a fundamental right in this country. But remember, so is equal rights and separation of church and state, so this debate is a losing battle for those who are against gay marriage. The ship has sailed. That said, I will still eat their chicken sandwich.

Geez Fred no one here is denying free speech. It’s just that speaking freely has consequences. Just as Dan Cathy has stated his view and many are severing their relationship with Chick-fil-A, the Jim Henson company is getting blowback from many here that are no longer buying muppet junk.

Love Chick-Fil-A:

Ya know, based on your MANY replies to others, you sir are the one that probably needs meds. Oh, and please do eat even more Chick-Fil-A each week. That artery clogging, high sodium, preservative laden ‘chicken sandwich meal’ has at least 50 or more ingredients and all the fat a person needs for an entire day. So, go on with your gluttonous, bad, message board trolling self. (psst – gluttony is a sin too).

Just sitting here reading all of these responses while I eat my Chick-Fil-A for lunch and thoroughly enjoy the chocolate milkshake. To both sides of this hotly debated issue. THIS IS NOT POLITICAL, SO PLEASE DON”T USE THAT WORD!!! This is a social/lifestyle belief issue and nothing more. The Mayor of Boston is using this as a political issue as well as a social issue by his declaration that he won’t allow a business to operate within his city that has views contrary to his.

Last I checked, DAN Cathy, not Truett, made the comment that he essentially does not believe in same sex marriage. He did not say that gay people would not be served at Chick-Fil-A so he is not discriminating in any way, shape or form. Who a company chooses to donate money too is their own business but based on the listing that was provided in a previous post, I can’t really see where there is a problem. They are not donating to any terrorist or hate group. Those of you who are going to say that these charities are hate groups because their philosophical beliefs don’t align with yours just need to get over it.
I know homosexuals and by and large they are very good people. Yes, there are bad eggs in all groups of people. At the end of the day, I accept people for who they are and the fact that they have a right to their opinion. I may not agree with that opinion but they are entitled to it. I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. Maybe there should be some “civil union” classification allowed that provides more rights for same sex couples. That is probably another topic for debate.
So, be tolerant and allow Dan Cathy to have his opinion on same sex marriage and allow the Henson company to have their opinion on the matter and to take whatever action they feel the need to take.
My sandwich and waffle fries were very good and that shake is just deeeeelicious!!! Now everybody have a nice day!

Although I don’t believe that corporations should be afforded all of the same rights of an individual, Chick-fil-a and Jim Henson Company are both perfectly in their rights to have and share their policy opinions. I also am free to excercise my right of free association. I don’t do business with organizations that advocate limiting the rights of a minority, so I guess I won’t be ordering any more #1s with sweat tea. I don’t want my money supporting that. Jim Henson Company has always encoured diverse thought, including conservative thought, so I’ll still be making my way down to the Atlanta Center for Puppetry arts and to any fun new movies or shows that JHC releases.

Looks like the majority of the people here fully support CFA – might even eat there more often than they do now. Kinda looks like the 2% of the population who decided to poke CFA (and yes, you guys have been pushing for a statement for years), is now seeing the 98% poke back. CFA may have unknowingly found a way to INCREASE business. I’m no math scholar, but why would you pander to the 2% when you can have the 98%? Now that’s a GREAT business model!!!! And all for just stating your beliefs. WTG, CFA!
