Henson Company breaks off relationship with Chick-Fil-A over gay marriage stance

The Jim Henson Company has announced via it’s Facebook page that it no longer wishes to partner with Chick-Fil-A because Henson’s company supports gay marriage.

The Huffington Post:

“… on Friday, the Jim Henson Company posted the following statement to their Facebook page:”

“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD. (http://www.glaad.org/)”

“With this, The Jim Henson Company joins the ranks of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who has vowed to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city, office star Ed Helms who tweeted that the chain had “lost a loyal fan,” and the countless individuals who have taken to social media to voice disapproval, including those planning a National Same Sex Kiss Day on August 3, in condemning the Chick-Fil-A’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage. “

A fan site reports that Chick-Fil-A kids meals were featuring a Jim Henson Creature Shop make-your-own puppet toy from mid July to Aug. 18th.

How do you feel about  Chick-Fil-A’s stance on gay marriage? Does it influence your decision to buy your food there either way? If you are offended, it is hard to give it up? (That is some yummy chicken.) Do you think the owners should stop talking about their views?

(I know this is a polarizing issue but please try to stay polite and discuss it like adults. No name calling please.)

@CHI

Did you ever notice that if you disagree with a closed minded overly religious zealot about ANYTHING, then you are bashed for it?

Door swings both ways there pal……

So the Jim Henson Company, that prides itself on embracing “diversity and inclusiveness”, is going to join in an effort to block a business that has a different opinion? And apparently the Jim Henson Company doesn’t seem to find that hypocritical?

J Williams – “gay marriage is not valid union and cannot procreate.”

So the hetero couples who cannot have children because of medical reasons are not “valid unions”? Do some of you people even think for 5 seconds about what you’re saying before you spout nonsense? I think not.

The difference in the two opposing opinions is that one fuels the HATE that results in people being beaten, murdered, ostracized, ridiculed, and bullied for what they have NO CONTROL OVER. Many gay people have committed suicide as a result of this hate. How many devout Christians spewing homophobia have been gang beaten? murdered? bullied? for their stance?

The year 2011 saw more fatal hate crimes (i.e. MURDER) in the US against gays than any other year. THIRTY people were MURDERED for being GAY! Do you think your Jesus Christ would approve of that HATE? If he were alive today he would be a sandal wearing LIBERAL trying to promote peace among us. Dare I say, he would be a democrat trying to help the poor and those persecuted for their sexual orientation. And please now quote some misinterpreted biblical passage about Sodom and Gomorrah, or whatever else you can find in your bible. Funny how many ways that book can be twisted to fit an ideology. The KKK spews similar crap from the bible about how slavery is OK. Do you homophobes support that position too?

It amazes me how intolerant the “tolerance police” seem to be. This becomes an intolerance issue when, and only when, a LGBT person or family is actually refused service by a CFA store/store owner because of who they are. The fact that the CEO of a private organization makes his views known on what he defines as family, does not make the entire organization intolerant. CFA is one of the most tolerant organizations in corporate America. Many of the store owner operators are heavily involved in serving the communities that they are located. Providing free meals, special events and countless other service oriented opportunities for all in thier communities. Did the Jim Henson company, or for that matter, anybody deciding to boycott CFA, not understand that CFA is a faith based organization that holds strongly to their faith? Which, by the way, is one of the reasons they are such a strong company. With whom did they think they were doing business?

Maybe the GLBT community ought to start their own chicken sandwich business. They want rights? Maybe they should respect the rights of people who don’t agree with them. They are so intolerant!! And by the way, everyone has the right to marry a person of the opposite sex. What they want are additional rights.

First, I went to Chick-Fil-A Saturday at 11:30 a.m. It was packed. I plan on supporting it more over cheaper places because 1) it’s a good product 2) they have the same Bible-based values as I do and 3) I detest others who try to force their belief system which includes the social media boycott thing with the sole purpose of putting someone out of business. I understand boycotts and they have their place but boycotting over a religious issue (in this case the Cathy’s core beliefs) seems a bit unAmerican. Such actions are within their American rights, and I also have the right to ignore them and support who I want. In this case, maybe I won’t support the Henson company any longer.
A couple of other points, Chick-Fil-A doesn’t discriminate in their service. Gay people can go there and receive the same service and food as the most loyal church member. In fact, Christian philosophy stresses treating everyone with respect, equality and love in our daily walk and the Cathys abide by those principals as well. Christian philosophy states to treat your enemies even better than your friends, so it is plausible that a known gay person (but who would really know?) would be treated better than some of their loyal customers. So, everyone will be treated well in their stores. This is simply a belief issue, just as being closed on Sundays, and the Cathys have every right to it, to support organizations that support their beliefs, just as the Hensons have every right to support GLAAD. The Cathys have every right to voice their opinions, just as the Hensons.
As for the Boston mayor, that is just hot air. Chick-Fil-A has no plans to open in Boston anyway and he couldn’t stop them if they did. As long as the company got the proper zoning and business licenses, they could open. To try to stop them on a belief issue would put the city in a precarious lawsuit situation because it would violate basic rights to non-discriminatory commerce (which the mayor would be violating freedom of religion). Also, if you read the Boston paper, no citizen of that city supports the mayor. They want commerce and jobs. They also want chicken.

Standing for what you believe is great. That doesn’t mean you should exclude groups of people. Being a good Christian is about loving all of God’s creatures. Jesus might not have been gay, but I’m sure he would show love to anyone that was gay. What happened to the WWJD? That used to be the saying. I guess conservative Christians ask what would Jesus do only when it fits the jaded view they have developed. I am a 29 yr old straight, black, Christian male and when I see people being excluded by those that claim to be upstanding Christians it just reminds me of the hypocrisy of our country and I pray my generation and the ones that follow can eliminate the bigoted behavior our elders have shown us as an example. God loves all. If Chick-fil-la wants to claim to be a Christian organization by closing on Sunday’s then they should be upstanding Christians everyday. That means showing love to all God’s creatures every single day. I’m sure they aren’t going to give back the money Gays have paid them overt he decades, because money sees no color, sexual preference, or age. I hope the LGTB community stands up against this organization because we have no place for descrimination in this country.

Nobody [who matters] cares about what Henson does or these other nitwits who lash back at folks who stick by their beliefs. The company is awesome and have shown in the past that they will not be suppressed just to get along with everyone. Probably the best managed fast food chain in the business. This is funny stuff when these groups go on a self-righteous rampage, preach tolerance, accuse others of intolerance, and are, in fact, intolerant themselves. What a joke.

Dan Cathy is not being homophobic and neither am I when we say that we believe the Bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman. God created the woman for the man. That’s what the first book in the Bible says. That’s very plain and simple to understand for most people and don’t tell me that some Christians believe that homosexuality is not a sin. If the Holy Spirit lives in you then what you believe will not oppose what God says in the Bible.

I hate Chik-fil-A. Never have liked any of their products except the peach milk shake. My family loves them though.

I’m saddened that the hypocrites at Jim Henson Studios though believe that while THEY have the right to THEIR beliefs and THEIR right to express them that the Cathy’s don’t.

Seems a lot of folks and apparently ALL the gays and lesbian are the same hypocrites as the Henson’s. That saddens me. Those fighting oppression SHOULD you would think be more sensitive to being just as oppressive and heavy handed as those they oppose.

I guess that now only gays and lesbians have the right to opinions and free speech……..

“Corporations” do not have beliefs, people do. The people inside Chik-fil-A who help to form the ‘corporate culture’ should withold from making statements that de-legitimize other people’s beliefs and lifestyle choices. I think the same could be said about Henson Co. Sometimes these corporate marriages end up just like real ones- in a nasty divorce. They both thought the other looked so attractive, butt in reality they just don’t agree on basic principles.
