Henson Company breaks off relationship with Chick-Fil-A over gay marriage stance

The Jim Henson Company has announced via it’s Facebook page that it no longer wishes to partner with Chick-Fil-A because Henson’s company supports gay marriage.

The Huffington Post:

“… on Friday, the Jim Henson Company posted the following statement to their Facebook page:”

“The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD. (http://www.glaad.org/)”

“With this, The Jim Henson Company joins the ranks of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who has vowed to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant in the city, office star Ed Helms who tweeted that the chain had “lost a loyal fan,” and the countless individuals who have taken to social media to voice disapproval, including those planning a National Same Sex Kiss Day on August 3, in condemning the Chick-Fil-A’s CEO’s opposition to same sex marriage. “

A fan site reports that Chick-Fil-A kids meals were featuring a Jim Henson Creature Shop make-your-own puppet toy from mid July to Aug. 18th.

How do you feel about  Chick-Fil-A’s stance on gay marriage? Does it influence your decision to buy your food there either way? If you are offended, it is hard to give it up? (That is some yummy chicken.) Do you think the owners should stop talking about their views?

(I know this is a polarizing issue but please try to stay polite and discuss it like adults. No name calling please.)

I prefer the vanilla shakes at Chick-Fil-A because, personally, I believe they taste better than chocolate. Apparently, that makes me a “hater” of chocolate and a chockophobe, and unworthy of having relationships with those who prefer chocolate. I plan to march down Peachtree this afternoon wearing nothing but a Speedo with a vanilla milkshake tied to the front of it.

ricardus – “I stand with Chick-Fil-A as their response to gay “marrriage” is the same as mine. I don’t buy any of this “diversity” and “inclusiveness” garbage as it diminishes me personally. I am a Christian. a Catholic and an American, therefore I can’t buy into any of this stuff.”

Thanks for exemplifying the very reason that I can’t buy into any of that “religion” stuff. Religious people don’t worship God. They worship themselves.

I bought their overpriced, tasteless cr@p once a few years ago. I never made that mistake again.

That others are easily swayed by clever Madison Avenue manipulators into thinking it is not, is their choice.

At any rate, good on the Hensons.

Not that the agents of intolerance care, they have enough money that they don’t have to…

Quite frankly, this is more of an issue regarding civil rights. Very similar to when the government didn’t allow women to vote or the black rights civil movement in the 60s. Chick-Fil-A’s owner should have not said anything. we all know they are a religious based company. i’m fine with that … but rarely do i stop buying from somebody based on their religious beliefs. However, i have family members that are gay and friends that are gay, and this is a strong issue i support. This is why i choose not to eat Chick-Fil-A anymore. it saddens me b/c i LOVE their food and they have great employees and service.

What is the purpose of prolonging this comment posting? Obviously, the purpose is to fan the flames on this issue. Everyone has already said everything that can possibly be said about this situation – all the columnist is doing at this point is milking the controversy – and there is already enough divisiveness on this subject – and most other subjects as well.

Shut down the post, already. Enough is enough. No one is going to change their minds on this matter, at least not any time soon.

I support Chick-Fil-A in their decision and stand by them… Heterosexuals…we seem to be the minority and if we say No.. we won’t conform.. or accept… then we’re wrong… we’re biased.. no.. we made a decision.. Just like you did… so if I don’t agree with it.. You won’t MAKE ME… that’s disgusting and I feel bullied… Furthermore…I won’t be supporting anything related to the Jim Henson Company.. EVER… BULLIES

I agree with something I heard someone else say – marriage licenses were created as a way to raise tax revenue. Why not allow counties to issue “civil union” licenses to both heterosexual and homosexual people and allow churches to “marry” people. Some denominations support gay marriage, other’s don’t, but then the marriage issue wouldn’t be an issue. If you don’t attend church (straight or gay) then you would be legal via civil union.

Dan the Man……

I have no idea what you are talking about. How am I limiting your freedom? I am just expressing my opinion….under the U.S. Constitution. But I do feel…..you do little reading of my posts with little or no understanding of point expressed…..and just a lot of immediate overreacting to them…..which is typical of a reactionary…..but you also have that right under the U.S. Constitution…….but the lack of reading comprehension and critical thinking skills….as I have seen on a bumper sticker…..”should be painful”….in my opinion…..and that opinion is protected by the U.S. Constitution as well.

• Focus On The Family: $12,500
• Eagle Forum: $5,000
• Exodus International: $1,000
• Family Research Council: $1,000

“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

John…..

They have that right to do so……as an American company…..that is based on very conservative Christian beliefs and the fact that those organizations are legit and well known for their conservative Christian points of view. If it bothers you, then don’t buy the product they market. It is that simple. It does not bother me that they give money to those organizations….many of which do wonderful things to help people in need….even though I am not a “conservative Christian.”

The Mupets are fantasy, Chic-Fil-A is reality. Same sex marriage is an unsustainable path that can only lead to the distruction of the human race, since there is no procreation it is a dead end street. It is based on lust, not love.

I’m so very proud of Chick-Fil-A. A business that stands behind its beliefs and values is a refreshing idea. Gay marriage is not a valid union and cannot procreate.
Equal rights for all, I thought we already had. Corporations dictate what policies are implemented and that includes insurance companies and hospitals. So let’s change corporate policy.

I am offended that the Muppets and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting get almost $400 million every year from the taxpayers. Money that could be far better used than paying for Miss Piggy and Kermit.
Why are the US taxpayers paying for the Muppets, Sesame Street, etc. ?
Why can’t they pay their own way like the rest of TV!!

I support Cathy. Why? Because just as Jim Henson, the Boston Mayor, and anybody who supports gay marraige, which I don’t support gay marraige or “domestic partnership” either, has a right to their beliefs just as much as LGBTs do! Jim and anybody else can POUT all they want. People need to stop “running scared.” Just because we don’t believe in gay marraige and you do doesn’t make either of us right, it says we have the right to believe and stand on what we believe.

I’ll leave the Bible out for now because this whole debate goes far beyond “gay rights.” This country (looking at crime, the joke called Wall Street, homelessness, rise in STD’s, etc., etc., etc.,) is turning to a bigger and bigger “dung hill” because morality is no longer important to many.

For example, a single woman can do an absolute wonderful job raising a son, but it’s impossible for her to teach him to be a MAN, because she doesn’t even know what it is to be a MAN. A MAN can’t teach a GIRL to be a woman. Don’t you see, this is whack. You use the word NORMAL and somebody asks “What’s NORMAL?” There will always be an opposing side to whatever you believe.

Slave masters used the Bible to support Slavery. Terrorists come up with “reasons” to strap on bombs. Murderers think it’s alright to kill. Where is any of it going to stop? Biblically, it’s written where (oh I forgot….many don’t believe in the Bible either) all this will end.

Just because I wouldn’t hurt or slander LGBTs doesn’t mean I have to support them. The whole issue, as well as others have become distorted because “I want to have it my way.”

People need to stop being so “politically correct” and bring back the moral fiber that built this country.

I hope there are just as many people who will not be afraid to stand alongside Cathy and stop being held hostage because “I stood my ground and so what you don’t like me.” Boo hoo… GETOVERIT!

Right on Cathy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way….I know how to delete emails:)

I did not have the time or desire to read all 832 comments posted up to this point, but I want to express my views on this. I have loved Chick-Fil-A food since I was a young girl. At 35, I will now choose not to eat there, not because the owner declared his beliefs, but because as a company they are choosing to donate to organizations that are actively trying to stop me from being able to legally marry the woman I love. I have no problem with them having their beliefs or expressing them, I am just choosing not to give my money to an organization that will in turn donate part of that to a cause I very much am against. I do not hate the company, owners, Christians, or any other group, but I can most certainly choose not to actively support them with my dollars. I want them to be able to enjoy their free speech as much as I can enjoy mine – given that we all avoid inciting violence or threats.
