Do you now have desk dump all over your house?
This is one of the many piles of school work now decorating my house.
Another pile has formed on the coffee table in the family room.
During the last three days the kids have been bringing home all their old papers and projects from school. The result is piles of “desk dump” all over my house.
Usually when they bring home their Friday folders I look through the stuff and then put the work in a sliding drawer. Each child has a drawer. At the end of the year I sort though and pull out the cutest stuff to save. But the last few days the work is coming home in such volumes that I haven’t had a chance to throw it in the drawer.
Have your kids brought home tons of papers and projects this week? Do you have piles around the house? Where does it eventually end up? How much of it will you save?

I have mail dump. Are we the only ones who get a ton of mail that we did not sign up for? When I am traveling, I ask my husband to put the mail in a box. I pay most of my bills over the phone and do not have time to look at the mail when I am home for just a quick turn around. We were also in St. Augustine all of last week and had our mail held. Now, I am home for 3 weeks ( hoorah) and have to sort through it. It seems like such a waste to send all this stuff that goes straight into the recycling bin. Am I the only one who feels this way? Good luck! I have saved some cute art projects hat evoke memories! We even have just a few that are framed professionally and I enjoy them each day.

Oh how I HATE those poster board projects. I have a stack stored under my sofa. Just can’t stand to throw them away. I have a friend who scans and files (in the computer) almost everything her daughter does. She has no paper build-up at all.

I have an accordion file where I save some of the stuff. When they start emptying their desks on the last days of school, most of it goes in the trash except for school supplies. And any awards.

I once heard the idea to store a certain number of items in pizza boxes (clean, new ones :-) ) They are big enough to hold larger pieces of paper. Save only as much as will fit in one box, write the child’s name and school year on the box and stack them in a closet. I thought it was a great idea.

Yes, and most of it, with the exception of awards and work I want to review so I know what we need to practice over the summer, is going in the trash. I will take a pic of a particularly cool project he did for future ideas.

My son’s first grade teacher did the pizza box thing (wow, that was 16 years ago!). They decorated them, and throughout the school year put their best work in them. Then, they came home at the end of the year. It’s in my attic now. I looked at it a couple years ago when I was digging out Christmas decorations, a great walk down memory lane.

Each child has a wall in our den for their artwork. We go through the “desk dump” and they decide what they want to put up. BUT, when something is put up, something else must come down. It’s up to each child….but I think it’s a great way to showcase their art/thoughts/projects/etc….
It’s also a great way for them to be creative and design their own wall.

I’ve saved all my son’s work so far (he’s only 4 so there’s only a small pile). Right now I have it all in a basket, but I will probably get a box to put it all in. Not sure how long I’ll hang on to it all but one box in the garage won’t make much difference.

I keep the journals…it helps me remember what they were interested in, what was going on, and also see their skills improve. Some key pieces of art work and the rest goes away.
At the moment the back of my car looks like your table. First thing Saturday Morning it will get cleared out….or no pool time :)

We saved items we felt to be important but that’s it — No way my better half would tolerate this being dumped wherever it happens to fall… Most of that stuff, in my worthless opinion, is crap.

@Figment – We have a laundry basket – same thing. It’s all artwork from preschool, and I know I’ll have to go through it someday, but for now, at least it’s contained!

@Augusta: Happy belated birthday! How was Provino’s? Augusta/MJG? I’ve never been there.
You can purchase the older newspaper drawers, which hold the “wider/longer” projects or have your child hold up the item and you capture it digitally. Then, the stuff can be tossed.
I have regular boxes for each kid for each year. I don’t know how to keep the “cutest” stuff or the stuff I’m proudest of because the children are not always cute and I am proud of everything whether they colored inside the lines or not. I’m more of a realist – kids will be kids and will have a scratch on their face on picture day and may not win some made-up award, but they may – and that’s what their schoolwork collections represent.

@Kat – Provino’s is great if you haven’t been there yet. I personally like Ippolito’s better if I have a choice, but both are very good Italian. I get your point on “cute” – since DD is so young, she still colors outside the lines but it’s all fun, especially if little handprints are involved. Heck, one of my favorite pieces (if you will) is a horse with a googly eye for a nostril :o)

@Kat – Unfortunately it was horrible last night. We went to the Mall of Georgia Provinios, and the food was bland at best. I ordered Chicken Francese, which was supposed to be breaded chicken breasts in a wine, butter, lemon sauce. When it arrived at the table, it was two chicken breasts swimming in butter. No wine, no lemon. Then I had to ask for my pasta, which was brought to me an a small bread plate. The garlic rolls were SO garlicy, I’m still tasting them…..I will NEVER go back.
This is exactly why we don’t go to restaurants. I would much rather eat a cold bowl of soup at home, then to give my hard earned money to places like this. I fired off an email to Provinos. If they send me coupon, I will give them away or throw them away. I will NEVER go back!!
And thank you for the birthday wishes. I did have a wonderful day full of love. Dinner did NOT ruin my day. It’s all good!!

@ Augusta…sorry that you had a bad experience. That is where we had our party and everyone said the food was great. It was almost 3 years ago, so things may have changed. Also,we did not have that dish. It is interesting how a dining experience can be amazing for some people and terrible for others. It has happened to me too. I prefer Dominick’s over Provino’s but other may not. The garlic rolls ARE very garlicky and they have been like that for as long as I can remember…haha!
I rarely eat steak out, as I am not interested in plunking down $100 for our family to eat steak and then my steak not being very good. We love our steaks grilled out on our own grill. I do like to eat prime rib out and have never made it myself. We have had several people recommend Osteen’s in St. Augustine. We do not care for it as we do not like fried/breaded fish. That is just us.

@ MJG – hahaha when we go to Longhorn (my brother loves it) or other steak house as a family I order chicken. :) I have never liked a steak cooked out as much as one from my own backyard. I like to order out what I would never make at home (like Chinese)….I do love Chicken Francase but since I learned to make it at home I seldom get it out any more.

@BusyMom..I am up for it…anyone want to join me…haha! I LOVE RESTAURANTS. I am so over cooking but since I am not working as much this summer, I will do it. We are having chicken fajitas for dinner and I need to go get some tortillas.

As a teacher, I did not save much over the years, because I was sure there would be so much more to come. I did save my oldest daughter’s story she wrote all by herself about The Blak Wido Spidr at age 5. I saved her brother’s 6 year old efforts on Leaders for World Peace (the worksheet on grade level 5 that he did correctly until he got to the question, “As a citizen of the world, what would you do to help promote world peace?” with his answer, “I’d fight for it!” ) Of course many Christmas and Mother’s Day gifts, especially if they included a handprint. I have quite a few report cards, including college ones. But that is about it.

See I never keep the report cards….Class photos, school photo, some art, notes/cards yes. Some of the art is actually hanging in my house as framed art on a permanent basis. Some is on temporary basis. If there is something that was REALLY important to them they get to keep that too.
One thing I do, and didn’t really think about it. I write them 2 notes a year (and I know the youngest keeps them) during school. One at the beginning of the year that shares that I know they can do well and succeed. One at the end of the year that tells them all the growth I have seen in them. ALWAYS positive notes. No woo hoo you made an A….grades are not addressed in these…they are all about the personal growth in the child.
Well I was just stunned when I handed one to my older child (12). She read it and tossed it aside. I said is there something wrong? She said I think I am getting to old for you tell me that you see the changes in me. I am too old to get little notes from my mom that say anything.
REALLY? If my Mom slipped me a note that said “Hey, I want you to know I think your doing a great job raising those kids. I see you go out every day and try to do your best. I see you help others….” that kind of thing, I would be THRILLED. I am 42 years old need no affirmation from my Mom, but if she took the time to say hey I am glad you are mine it would still make me smile. You know?

I throw all of it away. I am the child of person who saved EVERYTHING! I am over 40 years old and in a heartbeat she will pull out some drawing or art project that I did when I was 4 or 5! So I don’t keep ANYTHING! I REFUSE to do that to my kids or minimize my living space holding on to things they don’t want! NOW, she’s trying to “give” all that stuff to me. If it comes to me it’s going to be used to stoke the fire on the BBQ grill!

I did just tell them they can earn $10 for every 25 pages of the Summer Bridge books they complete. Up to $50 for a few hours of their summer. 12 yo said that works for her. Hey whatever it takes to get her to do the book and stay up on the skills.

We have several piles around the house like that that we’ve been adding to for the last couple of weeks. This weekend my wife & I will sit down with the kids and let them go through their piles and pick 5-10 of their favorite projects to keep and we’ll store them in big plastic bins we keep in the basement for all the school work and projects.

@FCM, keep writing those notes — what a lovely idea! She might not think much of it now, but she will learn to appreciate a mom who takes the time to tell their child how much they mean to them and how much they love them.
@True: My daughter is one of the least sentimental people in the world when it comes to “things” – she is RUTHLESS. I wish I was more like her, because I, too, “scrapbook my life” with mementos, etc. I realized that she and I were on totally different pages when she was cleaning her room one day (unasked), and I noticed some books in trash. *I’m* the one that was exclaiming, “Oh, you aren’t throwing THIS book away, are you?! You LOVED this book!” But even as ruthless as she is — she enjoys browsing through scrapboxes I have of significant vacations, etc.
One great idea I saw for a memento for a graduating senior: A calendar of their year, with as many day blocks as possible containing a photo of them on that day — i.e., before a dance, at a game, during a play, working on a project, hanging out with friends, etc. Of course, you have to start at the beginning of the year and keep it up — which is why *I* never could get around to one — but it’s an interesting idea that could be adapted for any year, if a parent was interested in keeping a detailed record.

We have 1 big plastic box for each child(2) in their closets. They hold everything from birth cards to report cards to diplomas. I did not keep every single thing they did in school, but, just a few things each made. I used to write notes on a napkin in their lunches and now, with my daughter in college, I send her a greeting card each week. Just because you save some (or all) of your children’s artwork/schoolwork DOES NOT mean you are a hoarder. If you had papers, newspapers, magazines, every bit of artwork, tons of unfinished projects, and collections of all sorts. Plus, you think everything will be worth something one day, then you are a hoarder.
The rest of us? We’re parents trying to preserve what we can (while our kids don’t “get” it, are oblivious to it, etc.).

There’s something I’ve haven’t told you all year, but it’s time to tell you now.
Before the first day of class last August I put a rectangular basket, almost the size of a loaf of bread, up on the metal cabinet in the back of The Cozy Room of Learning to put pencils in. Pencils I knew I’d be collecting from off of the floor after class was dismissed when I’d mope around the room rearranging desks, collecting jackets, expensive laptop computers, binders, and textbooks. Mostly science textbooks are left behind. I have no idea why.
I knew from my substitute teaching days that if a kid really needed a pencil then all he had to do was to look on the floor somewhere.
I brought the basket home yesterday, and today, since I don’t have a sixth period exam, here I am having a nice mid-week day off feeling and looking a little lunaticky in my gross bathrobe.
I poured the basket on the floor to find an answer to something I’ve wondered about for ten months …

Dixie, I know you’ve got some questions and concerns. Let me go ahead and comfort you with my reason: It was because I wanted to see how many utensils I’d collect in a school year. About as simple and goofy as that. But the real moral of this weird one is this for all people of the world: What you need is probably right there at your feet. That is, before you ask for some help … try to do the thing yourself.

A teacher once told me that after she had given directions, there were always students who were not listening and said, “What am I supposed to do?” Her reply, “Ask three, then ask me.” If they were resourceful enough to check with three peers, they probably did not need to ask her. I thought it was clever!

@FCM, what a great idea. K’s bday is Saturday and I have done a bday letter for him talking about what he is into and doing right now and our hopes and dreams for the future. I hope to do one every year and next year I want to start a birthday interview. I say keep doing them for your kids even if they go in a keepsake box until they are 30. One day they will cherish them.
I am at my parent’s house this week and got my baby book out last night and thoroughly enjoyed looking at what a beautiful job my mom did of capturing my childhood. I hope I can do as good of a job as she did. I also loved that she saved the hospital bill. $612.00 to have a baby in Montgomery, AL in 1974 and stay for 4 nights. $20K at Northside in 2012 with a 4 night stay ;o)!
Is the only Dominick’s still the one in old Norcross? I have not eaten there in years, but it was divine a long time ago. And we only eat steak at home too. I love a great meal out, but I marinate steak better than restaurants and my husband grills it perfectly!

@ Fred…while it is certainly not the same as the Italian food in Boston or NYC, I do enjoy it. I am not a good Italian cook.
I do not consider a restaurant with 4 locations a chain restaurant ( they used to only have one in Norcross until about 5 years ago) …that, to me, would be Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill or Maggiano’s. Is a restaurant a chain when they open one location and have such success that they decide to expand? I guess I am thinking chains are more of a regional thing or national, with LOTS of locations…anyone? I do not know.
I do like Maggiano’s and ate there with Denise and Becky ( on this blog). I typically do not eat at Olive Garden unless I go for their ***all you can eat salad and soup*** for lunch or if I am out of town and too pooped to look for anything else.

@OMGMJG!: I don’t know what your problem is, but MJG is NOT it — you’ve got some sort of weird fascination with her posts, and to tell you the truth, I am sick and tired of logging in to the Mom blog to enjoy a few minutes of chatting with “friends” over “coffee” and encountering your unpleasant and obnoxious posts blasting a long-time participant who has had nothing but nice things to say about just about anyone. I suspect if I copied the definitions of “obsessive-compulsive disorder” or “borderline personality disorder”, you’d fit right in. OMGMJG you are an idiot. You’re a big girl/boy, so you should be able to handle a little criticism right? All I speak is the truth. I enjoy reading MJG’s posts. As a teacher, I have seen many guest speakers come and go and I would personally love to have her come to my school. She seems like a fun person. On another note, I realize that to some those school projects are “trash” and “crap” and we hear all the time “oh no, not another project”. Well, if we were only doing worksheets we’d hear complaints about that too. Really? You’d be surprised at what those projects bring out in children. I’ve seen very shy students begin to shine when it is their turn to present. I’m amazed at the creativity that some put into projects. What a great way to show what you have learned. Is it time consuming and more work? Yes it is, but what do we do in life that is worthwhile that is not time consuming and requires a little work? So before you blast your child’s teacher with complaints about those stupid projects, be thankful you don’t have a teacher who is a worksheet nazi. Your children are not learning much in those rooms. I will now step off my soapbox, go put my own child’s beautiful work in his 5th grade box to be added to the garage and enjoy my summer.

Personally I DO come to this blog to read mjg’s stuff lol. I find her funny and wise in some things, goofy in others (like all of us) and easy to “chat” with. She also is open to light-hearted teasing and will toss some back. Often times I’m days late to a blog so obviously i don’t leave a response, but whenever I scan the comments on this blog, I look for mjg’s. So when I see posts attacking her, I figure the poster is some sort of weirdo who is probably lonely or jealous so I skip over the post all the while kind of feeling sorry for that poster………
Oh I also look for your posts and Shaggy’s. There are others as well………

@Fred: I am sure you are probably right about ignoring the rude poster but it just makes me so mad when cowards hide behind their keyboards and deliberately set out to insult/hurt/annoy. I know you aren’t supposed to feed the trolls, because it is just giving them what they crave – attention. What kind of twisted person gets pleasure out of attacking someone anonymously like that? If it’s a regular poster, they should be ashamed of themselves, and if it’s a troll, then I hope a bridge falls on them :-). And, oddly, in “real life”, they would never dream of saying those things.

I find it sad that Theresa, you couldn’t find the time today to mention those who died for this Country. To write such a blog was just to much of an effort.
Shame on you. But then I guess it’s not as important as shopping or putting something on the grill or what ever. I mean those poor dumb stupid sons of bitches who gave their life for their Country, most of them around 18-20 don’t really deserve the time you gave your pork roast or whatever……..

But he doesn’t deserve a mention on Memorial Day………… It’s great being a mom. Better yet being a mom of cowards who never serve and let other die for them.

@Fred: Just because we’re not on a mom blog talking about it, it doesn’t mean that many of us aren’t observing Memorial Day for its true meaning.
If you hadn’t noticed — TWG works on a business schedule, seldom posting on holidays, etc. Why are you castigating the Mom blog in its entirety because TWG has the day off? Frankly, I have too much respect for the holiday to tag it on to the end of a blog about cluttered desks.
