Are ‘Toddlers and Tiaras’ moms being judged for being ‘white trash’ or for the pageant circuit?

TLC’s controversial show “Toddlers and Tiaras” premieres tonight to what I am sure will be a judgmental audience. But one writer on Slate.com wonders if the moms on “Toddlers” aren’t being judged for being on the pageant circuit but instead for being “white trash?” She wonders if these moms are really all that different from Tiger Moms pushing their kids academically or with activities, such as playing the piano. But the Tiger Moms aren’t judged as harshly.

From Slate:

“While not uniform among the pageant families, many featured on Toddlers and Tiaras are from poor, rural, Southern areas, which the show highlights with stark establishing shots of sparse and depressed towns. The “white trash” markers of the mothers—strong accents, ungrammatical speech, obesity—are also highlighted on the show, providing a classist subtext to the media’s judgment of parenting. It’s not whether waxing your young daughter’s eyebrows or depriving her of dinner is objectively worse. It’s that a Toddlers and Tiaras mother’s participation in supposedly “trashy” culture makes her a beastly parent, while Dara-Lynn Weiss is a merely controversial or micromanaging one.”

“The media takes a certain thrill in humiliating and hating the Toddlers and Tiaras mothers, and this would not necessarily be a problem (it is reality television, after all) were it not happening against the backdrop of the reaction to Weiss and others, like Amy Chua, a mother who also came forward with controversial parenting techniques and leveraged them for her personal success. In Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Chua admitted to denying her then 7-year-old daughter bathroom and water breaks until she learned to play a piano piece just right. She certainly faced criticism, but she was never vilified as the Toddlers and Tiaras mothers have been because her ultimate goal for her children, admittance to prestigious universities, is accepted as legitimate by bourgeois parenting standards.”

“The mothers on Toddlers and Tiaras are chastised for ignoring their children’s feelings, forcing their own desires upon them, and spending exorbitant amounts of money to do so. If the mothers on Toddlers and Tiaras expended their funds and parental pressure on SAT tutoring, squash instruction, or foreign language immersion, they likely would not be dismissed as broad caricatures that are all too easy to hate. Because in reality, the main difference between a pageant mom and a tiger mother is just a matter of accessories.”

What do you think? Are the moms on “Toddlers” being judged for being low-class or for what they are they doing with their children on the pageant circuit? Are they any better or worse than the self-avowed Tiger Moms that won’t let their kid pee before they learn a certain piano piece or have friends over for a spend-the-night party?

My 2 year old will be featured on an upcoming pageant this summer. We make over 300,000 a year so no white trash here. It is a hobby. Our Toddler is the 4 th out of 3 children, the others are 16, 13, and 11 and the others are straight A students with the 7 th grader going to Duke after scoring 95th percentile on the SAT in 7 th grade. We have all kinds of activities, dance, soccer, football, band, cheerleading, chorus, church, church youth group. Sorry, we have all of out teeth, I’m a freaking hygenist

Not All toddlers and tiaras Moms are white trash! How many soccer, baseball, dance, and carpool Moms are obese, and have Husbands missing teeth?

My Daughter likes to play dress up, she wins money doing it!

@ToddlerPageantMom – Will you be dressing your 2 year old up in hair extensions, full face of makeup, and less-than-classy outfits? For some reason, I think the answer is no. You sound like you have a little more sense than some of the parents portrayed on these pageant shows. But if you do, then, no you are not white trash, but you can’t be angry that folks are going to disagree with how you are handling your kid with respect to the pageants. Is it right? Probaby not but I’ll tell you that the biggest issue for ME on the pageant shows is the fact that the kids are wearing more makeup than me (I’m 39), wearing fake hair at age 6, wearing costumes that are very revealing, getting fake tans even when it burns (I saw this), getting fake teeth (flippers). That is beyond playing dress up. I have maybe watched a total of 20 minutes of Toddlers and Tiaras but what I’ve seen has made me angry and sad for the girls who, in my opinion, are being taught that they have to be fake to win.

DB,

I gotta stick my hand up for “George at Mt Vernon”. Theresa will be able to confirm that, yes, it was me.
I don’t do the “identity phase shift” that is common on these blogs, but I just couldn’t resist a knock out punch to a knucklehead…Saul Good.
I must say that I am glad you enjoyed it. The handle grab was part of the theme.

DB,

I must add that I left his other moronic history alone to seize the most obvious and dear to our American hearts…you know the democracy (Classical Greek…see antiquity Saul Good) and the justice system (the British that we were whupping at the time of the Revolution but still shared a heritage) being attributed to France, which was a monarchy at the time, as the French Revolution came after. Monarchies at the time weren’t overly fond of democracy, usually chopping off democratic heads.
I could have run with any of the three, but was in a hurry, because I had a sudden urge for french fries, which are really Flemish fries.

@ToddlerPageantMom- trash with cash is still trash. if you have no problems dressing your daughter up like a child prostitute, you’re trash.

@Yorktown2

Your argument might have been valid except you fail at proper spelling and grammar usage.

It’s LOSE! Not Loose!

“Loose” means it doesn’t fit. “Lose” means you didn’t win.
