‘Baby yoga:’ Safe and beneficial or possibly child abuse?

(Please do NOT try this at home!)

My friend shared this You Tube video of a trend called “Baby Yoga,” where a baby is swung all around a woman’s body by its arms. It is so shocking that is looks like it’s a doll and not a real baby. I can’t imagine doing this to a real baby.

You MUST watch the video to discuss.

The caption with the video describes “baby yoga” as:

“DAHAB, EGYPT – UNDATED: MILLIONS of people around the world were left stunned when a video of Lena Fokina doing ‘baby yoga’ broke on the internet. The 51-year-old Russian was filmed spinning and flipping babies above her head and behind her back in such an outlandish fashion that several websites banned the footage for glorifying what to many would be considered child abuse. In fact, the moves were so shocking that most conceded they were being performed on a doll as no sane person would consider them acceptable. However, we tracked Lena down to a seminar called “Parenting the Deliberate Way” in Dahab, Egypt, where parents from across Europe were paying her to perform the same moves on their infants, some just a few months old. But Lena, who is a qualified PE teacher in her native Russia, insists the practice is totally safe and actually beneficial to children.”

I have a hard time believing it is safe, much less beneficial. First off it looks like the poor baby’s arms would be pulled out of their sockets and second off I would be worried about the baby’s brain getting swung around so much. Holy cow.

What do you think of the baby yoga? Is there a cultural divide on this — why the Europeans may get it and we don’t (or at least I don’t)?

That has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. What mother would do that to her BABY? I’m appalled.

WTH?! You can see the baby crying as he/she is being tossed and turned in the air. This is most definitely abuse. Everyone is not cut out to be a parent. This baby should be taken away from her. This isn’t about cultural differences, this is about a child’s safety. Wow! Just wow!

What could possibly be the benefit? All I can envision is a baby throwing up all over the place during or after “exercising” as well as arms torn out of sockets.

What benefits does this women say throwing a baby around has?

It’s been awhile since I’ve had an infant but if I’m not mistaken, babies only have like 3 ingrained fears and one of them is falling. Seems all you’re doing is scaring them crap out of them.

The baby is crying…you can hear it. This was painful to watch; I can only imagine how painful it was for the baby.

Yes there is a cultural divide on this – those with common sense and those without it…

i can only tell after watching this video is that – If the baby is capable to go away from her then she would have done and slapped on the yoga teacher first. For me, This is a child abuse for sure.

WTH!!!! When a baby cries…they are usually in distress. Just because a woman has the capability to carry and birth a baby does not mean that they should be parents….This is just as bad as driving a baby around in a car without a car seat or letting the baby play with matches!!! WTH!!!!! Somebody arrest her please!!!!!

I don’t need to watch this video (and won’t) to know this is abuse. You don’t fling a baby around like that. Their necks don’t even work at such a young age!

Hurts to watch, who would let this lady do this to their child? She is not the mother of the child I guess since she is 51 y/o. To think this is “good for the baby” is so at odds to everything we are taught as new parents.

And what on earth is supposed to be the benefit? Arms twisted out of socket? Brain injury when you drop your baby? I swear, this reeks of a very realistic-looking hoax. I cannot imagine idiots would actually do this. I also think when the baby is really being swung around, it looks fake. If it’s not fake, these people are all morons.

That is awful. I have been around 2 kids with nursemaid’s elbow and their elbows pop out easily and it is terribly painful and their parents have not tried anything that DUMB. I would hate to find out what issues this foolishness might cause.

“Quit coddling that baby. Send it out to get work as a doorstop!”

This is who Lena claims to have learned from…

If it seems remotely plausible to you, be sure to read further down the article where Boris gives his opinion of mothers and woman in general.
